I asked this earlier in a thread but no response...

Dec 18, 2012, 8:24 PM

What is the issue everyone has with the S&C program? I believe that some people just want to believe that they know what they are talking about, when in reality it's ok to shut up some times. I want someone to explain what the problem is, besides that South Carolina looked bigger and faster. I wonder if any of these people have ever actually watched a work out with Coach Batson, or if they have ever touched a weight in their life. Regardless, I would like to know what people think is so wrong with our strength program

mentality. WHen we lose, some 1 has to be blamed. No 1 will blame MORris. VEnereal is too new. Dabo hire MOriis and VEneraeal , has won a couple div titles and an ACC title...

The new flavor is the S&C coach. Every one can get a pitchfork and rally behind this cause.

Maybe there are new, advance techniques that the older S&C coaches don't know.

But that's the thing, there's really no such thing as a "new technique" in S&C. Most of the time, if one coach knows it all of them do. Some coaches just use some things more than others. But there isn't one particular thing that sets a strength program apart from another, other than the coach's ability to get the guys jacked up and ready to get after that a$$, and I promise you Coach Batson lacks nothing in that area

the problem is when we play teams that utilize HGH in their program.***

It's called "watching games against teams with good S&C programs."

It's called "watching our 'All-American' center get owned by Wofford's nose guard last year."

It's called "not being able to hit 4 yards per carry against some of the worst teams in the conference."

It's called "watch the last 4 years against our rivals."

You said the problem --- Carolina looked bigger and faster. And we outrecruit them. What's your reasoning behind that? Has South Carolina just gotten lucky the past few years? You can use the HGH argument, but it's really pathetic.

If you can't turn on the tape and evaluate for yourself...there's no argument anyone is going to throw your way that can convince you. But some of us actually break down the tape and see 4* and 5* athletes getting dominated by 2* and 3* who are more explosive and functionally strong on the football field.

It's not something that just came out of thin air. It's been a problem at Clemson for some time.

But you didn't answer my question, what is the problem? What needs to change? What has coach Batson done or not done that has made people like you think he is the problem. There are plenty of numbers to suggest that other teams aren't bigger and faster, so in my mind I've already dismissed that. Congratulations on your film watching, but tell me specifically what the problem is, what other programs do better and what we don't do. By your logic, all strength coaches outside of the ones at Alabama and few other elite programs should be fired.

Re: I asked this earlier in a thread but no response...

The specific problem is: we don't have functional strength on the football field. We don't fire off the ball with the same force as other teams. Our large, D1-sized guys can bench press 400 pounds but get beat sometimes by guys who have no business being on the same football field. Our CB's can't press opposing WR's.

How you fix it, is you adopt a workout regimen that emphasizes functional, explosive, fast-twitch, violent muscle reactions that happen AFTER the ball is snapped. It's called the Gayle Hatch system, and it's what separates the teams that get good recruits from the teams that finish within the top 10 every year.

The widening gap between the have sand have nots is a direct result of 1) innovative S&C systems that get the most out of athletes on the field and 2) outdated systems that focus on maxes, bench presses, etc.

Joey Batson is not from the Gayle Hatch tree. It shows up a few times a year, usually when we least need it to.

They didn't look bigger and certaintly not faster. Had a couple plays gone different the outcome would have been different. That's not an excuse that's reality. Would anybody be saying they were bigger and faster then? No.

Great points.

Dec 18, 2012, 8:52 PM

Maybe S&C is an issue, maybe it's not. If Dabo does make a change, folks will say he threw Batson under the bus to save his own job.
It's a lose lose.

Many of the teams today use Olympic lifting technigues such as the clean and jerk, whereas Coach Batson uses techniques that isolate a muscle group such as the bench press. Critics would say a bodybuilding approach such as the one used by Coach Batson does not translate to the football field whereas an Olympic approach which uses several muscle groups for a short period of time makes a difference on the field. LSU with Coach Hatch supposedly has the best Olympic style S&C coach in the country. If we get mauled physically by LSU, it will be yet another indictment of our S&C program. If we hold our own, maybe ours is OK. I know this, when we won the national title in 1981, S&C coach George Dostal was a big reason why. I'm convinced Dan Brooks and Robbie Caldwell are great line coaches. If we're not physically dominant, it may be S&C.

Coach Batson also uses Olympic lifts lincluding the clean, jerk, hi pull, etc. But I understand where you are coming from. And I'm willing to listen to anybody on the topic, I just couldn't understand some people complaining about Coach Batson when they have no idea what goes on in the weight room. I think Dabo has a point about the aggression aspect. Some times our guys just look like they want to avoid the contact and the big hits. But our defensive linemen i feel like made major strides with this by using some aggression to shed blocks and find the football, and occasionally blow up a play.
