I remember reading on T-Net about Robert Gunn and the thing that stood out to me was a statement he made during recruitment when Coach wanted a picture with him at the Rock. He said that he wanted to wait until he is in uniform and running down the Hill for his first game as a Tiger before touching the Rock. I've been pulling for this kid since and I really hope he can turn things around and be the greatest kicker Clemson has ever had. And if not, so what. Life has more important things. May he grow in grace through it all.

Obviously the kid has a strong leg and is talented...he just has to get his head right.. and he will. Catman started out kind of rough too and went on the be one of the best we had.

we need to give him some nice easy PAT's for him to nail to build confidence. When he starts making those down the middle then give him a real field goals to kick.

The problem with him kicking PAT's is the height of his kicks. 75% of his kicks are coming out very low. I worry about this more than his accuracy. Every kick that is low has a high probability of being blocked. Throw in the accuracy issue, and he has real mechanics problems. No wonder he can kick the ball a long ways... it's a line drive most of the time. I think we should go with another kicker this season for field goals and PAT's, and let Gunn do kick-offs. Gunn can work on his mechanics during the offseason, and come back next year a real weapon. Right now Gunn is not a weapon.

Kicker is a very mental position and it's not surprising

that a freshman is having some struggles.
My issue isn't that he is inconsistent at this point, it's that we don't seem to have any other kickers on the roster to help out.
We shouldn't have to call a former walk-on who barely contributed and ask him to come back as a graduate student in order to have another capable kicker on the roster. It's horrible roster management.

is actually the veteran backup kicker and has reportedly had a rough few weeks in practice, hence why he hasn't gotten a shot in a meaningful game yet. If Dabo stuck with Gunn or went to an already-struggling Castner, he would catch flack for being too loyal and not looking outside of his roster for better options. Some fans will always find a problem though, so it's a tough spot to be in

You've said this like 5 times, and each time you are just ignorant to the situation. Our backup QUIT and transferred to UNC. Period.
We do have other kickers on the roster. But, apparently we have more trust in the graduate who has been with the program for 4 years and, creatively, are bringing him back. Good idea.
Gunn is a very highly ranked recruit. Kickers are streaky, the position is mental.
Clemson kicking has been phenomenal under Dabo for nearly his entire tenure.
You whine and moan repeatedly about us being over the 85 scholarship limit - your new approach here is completely contradictory.
Please go choose another team to troll.

Krump needs to heed house rules and re-ban herself.
Such a fraud she is.

Your boy has never been able to build a team remotely as good as the football team, hence you keep desperately reaching for any type of antagonist troll you can.
You’re a waste here, Krump.

If we had more scholarship kickers he’d argue that was a mistake too if Gunn had worked out. He simply argues against status quo for our successful coach and for it for a coach who has mired us in mediocrity for tenure. Before any of his sycophants argue otherwise - Brownell has finished the season with an rpi below 100 nearly half his time here. When you want to tear down the good and support the bad, it’s pretty clear you don’t actually like Clemson.

Many coaches have had to recruit from the student body for both kicking and punting. Remember Obed? Remember Iggy? There have been others as well. This is not uncommon, but I do wish it would have been addressed before the biggest game of the season so far.

I am rooting for him in football and in life. It hurts to see someone suffer and I am sure this kid feels worse than any of us for having kicked the way he has thus far. He is capable of being better and he knows that, let us all hope he is successful in finding his form and getting things worked out!!
