One of Dabos biggest decisions tomorrow will be

5

Sep 22, 2023, 12:09 PM

What do we do on 4th down inside field goal range. In a game that could be decided by a couple points and new clock rules essentially shaving full possessions off of the game, it could come down to a field goal make or miss.

What would TigerNet do?

Me personally I’m going to give Gunn one chance to hit up to 45yards. If he misses or misses an XP he’s done.

I believe he has already made his mind up on letting this former player kick unless I misread an earlier article. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

I think we only see gunn on kick offs and from deep in a 4th and long situation. 50+ yard kick

why would he kick long kicks when his PAT'S are often an adventure. Leg strength without accuracy get you nothing

Because Weitz doesn't have a big enough leg. If we need a long FG, it will need to be:

* Gunn
* Punt
* Go for it
* Fake it

Because even though I still hit my Driver 270 into the woods, when you have to carry 240, even though there's a slim chance it hits the fairway my 4 iron simple ain't got the distance.

Understand? Gunn is my driver. Weitz is my 4 iron.

That’s the way I understood it also. I think he’ll give Gunn a shot at 45yards and out if the score and time of game dictates. The kid has no pressure on him, just Dabo, and Dabo can take it!

Biggest decision is to either come to the sideline with the Waffle House menu or without it. Personally I prefer without it.

There is no way Gunn gets the first FG attempt unless it's a long one. Weitz will kick inside 40 yards.

The kicking problems may not necessarily be with the kicker. Maybe there's something wrong with the way the holder is holding it or something fundamentally wrong with spacing across the line. It seems like pressure comes quick from the left side on every kick. Do we got a coach who can study it and figure it out. Guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Duke Game was on the speed in which he approach the kicks. I noticed and said the my wife, he look too deliberate on that kick and he did it again on the next try and got one blocked. So I am sure the coaches saw the same thing and told him to pick the pace up just a bit. To me it is kind of like golf when you try to speed up to much you either block it real bad or snap hook it and occasionally catch one good . Unfortunately if this is the case he may have the yips. So sitting will probably help, until he can figure it out.

The earlier he figures out if he can trust Gunn in this game the easier that decision will be to make

Gunn's first kick that was blocked was because Duke got into the backfield. That could be that he was too slow getting it off or it could have been the speed of the penetration due to not being hindered at the line of scrimmage. The second kick was a miss because he kicked too low and someone got a hand on it. The missed PA against FAU..again too low. Then shanked another against FAU.

By comparison, we liked BT Potter, but he still missed 25% of his field goals in his career at Clemson. In his first season, he barely kicked above 50%.

So Gunn is at 25% currently. I say it is too soon to say that he will always suck...he just sucked (or perhaps the line sucked) in his first 3 college games.

If Weitz struggles then Gun kicks. Or it may go the other way. They may still give Gunn the nod and if he struggles they'll move the Weitz. Maybe I missed it, but has Dabo said that the new kicker will definitely do the kicking or is he a safety valve? He's bound to be a bit rusty and is in no way a sure thing.

The bottom line is that we will need the points badly no matter who kicks. Fingers crossed!

I sure a lot of factors could have contributed, but after watching Potter for the last 2 years and other consistent kickers he was definitely a half second slower than the good ones. Especially in the Duke game he was not hardly moving until the ball was in mid flight to the holder. I too hope he figures it out because if he does he will be awesome.

I can't imagine we even attempt any FGs outside of 30-35 yards

That’s the thing….we are gonna need every single point we can get.

So what’s the odds on making a 40yard FG vs converting on 4th and 4ish?

Gonna be crazy!!! Spot the ball!

I say we start doing what other teams do to us and play backyard football and go for it every 4th down within 5 yards on the opposing side of the field. Just be as aggressive as possible. We just need to stop settling for Fgs on every good drive.

The scary part is how bad he's missed. Even the extra points he made were ugly. He's got the talent, he has to control his nerves.

He's going to give Weitz a chance on anything inside 45 yds. If he hits the first one, then he will get a second chance, and the same with the third. If he misses any of those, it probably changes the thinking, depending on the game situation at the time.
