On Friday night I was getting dressed to take Ms. The Mole to an event at the Peace Center in Greenville. I opted to wear a pair of Cole Haan shoes I purchased around 10 years ago. I'm sure I've worn them less that 20 hours total as I tend to prefer black shoes.

All was well until we were walking back to our car. I was crossing the street and felt like I stepped into a small hole. But the feeling never went away. I looked at the bottom of my shoe to see if something had stuck to my heel. My heel was GONE! It was laying back in to road. I went back to retrieve it and noticed it didn't just fall off, it disintegreated.

Once I got home and in good lighting I flipped both shoes over to show Ms. The Mole and the bottom fell off of the other one! The entire heel and soles of both shoes were falling off. They had appeared to be in perfect shape before we left home because I would have noticed anything peculiar while I was brushing them prior to putting them on.

I did some research. After all...the are Cole Haan shoes. COLE HAAN!!!! They were $200+ years ago. The heels had a strange air pocket in them. Turns out NIKE had bought Cole Haan at one point and tried to use their Nike "Air" features in the heels. Apparently, my shoes were some of the last made by Nike before they sold the company to a private equity group. I looked up "Cole Haan shoe heel disintegration" on Google and learned this seems to be a regular thing and was attributed to "hydrolysis". I must have worn them in the rain earlier in my ownership and the water started a chemical breakdown of the fancy Nike heels. Can't wear your shoes in the rain. Who knew?

I will NEVER buy Cole Haan shoes again! And, GO TIGERS! (for the board Karen's out there)

It actually happened to the bottom of my aluminum boat. The aluminum was eaten away on two sides of the bottom. Mine was caused because of fishing in salt water.

That is electrolysis caused by moving saltwater over aluminum. You can paint the boat with a coating or add electrodes to the transom that will slowly ground the electrolysis and slowly eat away but it protects rest of the boat.
