102 - Oldest Fan to Throw Out First Pitch for Clemson was 102 Years Old

At 102 years old, Ruth Davidson still embraced life!

I have posted this story about Ruth Davidson before. I hope you all do not mind my mentioning it again. It is a story worth remembering.

Record #1:
On her 101st birthday (May 8, 2016), Clemson fan Ruth Davidson became the oldest person to throw out the first pitch at a Clemson baseball game. Of note: Clemson then beat NC State 2-1 in the game.

Record #2 (Breaking Record #!):
On her 102nd birthday (May 8, 2017) Ruth broke her own record when she threw out the first pitch at a Clemson baseball game against the University of Nevada!! Of note: Clemson won the game 9-4! Clemson, therefore, is undefeated (2-0) in games in which Ruth Davidson threw out the first pitch!

Being the oldest person to throw out the first pitch at a Clemson game seems like a record that might never be broken! When each of us reaches 102, may we all get around as well as her!!

Video included on her first pitch at age 102:

https://www.ncaa.com/news/baseball/article/2017-05-08/watch-102-year-old-clemson-baseball-fan-throws-out-first-pitch

Watch: 102-year-old Clemson fan throws out first pitch

It was a special birthday No. 102 for Ruth Davidson on Monday. Yes, I said 102.

Davidson, a 102-year-old Clemson fan, visited Doug Kingsmore Stadium for Monday's matinee baseball game against Nevada and delivered the first pitch to celebrate her birthday for the second straight year. She tossed an underhanded throw to righthander Patrick Andrews and had the chance to interact with players and coaches before the game.

Of note, Ms. Ruth Davidson also received “the prize for being the oldest in attendance” at Dabo’s August 2016 Ladies Clinic!

Was definitely not expecting a TD on that post.

As clarification on the previous post. I meant to agree that I thought Ruth Davidson was a great story. Her story is a heartwarming inspiration for sure!

My apologies if my intent was not clear. (Sadly - I am discovering that as I get older I become less and less clear for sure - LOL!)

"Aunt Mog", since her name was Margaret. My younger brother called her "Aunt Forty Cats", since she once commented that the fireplace insert in my parents new house "heated like 40 cats!" Can't you picture a jumbled up pile of cats, and the body heat such a pile would give off? Not to mention the purring that would be happening, probably sounding like a fleet of bombers approaching! Old aunts could be so endearingly funny at times, even unintentionally.

102 - Tanner Muse Gained 102 Yards on Interception Returns

Clemson DB Tanner Muse had an unusual way of running as part of his training. According to the Greenville News:

“Muse has two pit bulls that accompany him on his runs and have forced him into better shape. “They don’t like it when I run, so I either get fast or I get nipped,” Muse said.”

https://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/sports/college/clemson/2019/08/13/3-things-you-probably-dont-know-about-clemson-football-tanner-muse/1504028001/

That is man who takes training seriously! Running with pit bulls obviously worked! According to Steelers.com, Muse was lightening in a bottle at the 2020 NFL Combine:

“Muse was a star of the NFL Scouting Combine that year, posting a 4.41-second 40-yard dash with a 1.51-second 10-yard split.”

https://www.steelers.com/news/free-agency-how-tanner-muse-fits-with-steelers

Before Clemson:

According to ClemsonTigers.com, Tanner Muse “made a name for himself in Death Valley as a hard-hitting defender. The Belmont, N.C. native began his football career at six years old, and his ability to hit stems from his dad’s training.

“From the first time I ever strapped on pads, my dad and I would go out in the front yard, and he bought his own set of shoulder pads and helmet. He said, ‘If you can hit me as hard as you can, nothing else will phase you throughout your playing career.’”

https://clemsontigers.com/tanner-muse-senior-spotlight/

Kudos to Dad for teaching his son well!

At Clemson:

Muse originally committed to play football and baseball for Clemson. After redshirting his freshman year, he decided to concentrate on football. According to Sports-Reference.com, Muse registered the following statistics at Clemson:

- 191 Tackles (104 Solo and 87 Assisted)
- 7 Interceptions Returned for 102 Yards
- 1 Interception Return for Touchdown
- 1 Fumble Return for Touchdown

https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/tanner-muse-1.html

Interestingly, both touchdowns came against the same opponent: Syracuse. According to the Greenville News:

“Muse scored two career touchdowns at Clemson, both in games against Syracuse. He had a 64-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Orange in 2016 and a 63-yard fumble return for a score in 2017.”

https://www.greenvilleonline.com/story/sports/2020/04/24/nfl-draft-clemson-safety-tanner-muse-drafted-las-vegas-raiders/5135864002/

Of note: Muse might best be remembered for stopping Tua on 4th down - one yard short of a first down – in the 44-16 drubbing for the 2018 National Title!

After Clemson:

After a blistering 40-time at the 2020 NFL Combine (see above), Muse garnered significant NFL attention. Maybe we should all try running with pit bulls!

The Las Vegas Raiders selected Tanner Muse with the 100th pick (3rd Round) of the 2020 NFL Draft. According to Wikipedia Muse was injured first season. He never took a snap with the Raiders before being released.

Muse then signed with the Seattle Seahawks in September 2021. He played for the Seahawks in 2021 and 2022.

He signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in April 2023, but was released before the season.

The LA Chargers acquired Muse off waivers in 2023. He played the 2023 season with the Chargers.

Tanner was wide open all the time! Sometimes, that led to excellent plays on the field.

Sometimes, that led to missed assignments or missed tackles.

Despite that, I loved to watch him play!

South Carolina Highway 102 is a 25.55 mile state highway that starts the south end at US 15 Bus in North Hartsville, crosses US 1 in Patrick, and continues to the north end at SC 9 in Chesterfield. Dale Hatcher is from nearby Cheraw and is still kicking.

Another CCC built park is Cheraw State Park in northeast South Carolina about 5 miles below Cheraw. The park was created in 1934 on 7,362 acres donated by the U.S. government and local citizens, the largest park built by the CCC. Some of the original buildings are still in use as is 360 acre Lake Juniper. The park has the usual camping, picnicking, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, boating, and fishing for catfish, bass, and bream in the lake. RVs can be parked and cabins can be reserved and there are two camping areas that can only be accessed by boat. The park is also well known for its 18-hole championship golf course for those who like to hook and slice and putt a few golf balls. The park is near the Sandhills State Forest and home to the red-cockaded woodpecker, an endangered species of woodpecker.

Maybe Skeeta, Pig, and Tom Jackson (aka 76er) on the golf course.

Back in the late ‘90’s / early 2000’s, Cheraw State Park had a serious problem with pine straw theft.

Cheraw is so big, that people would sneak into the remote areas of the park and illegally collect the pine straw to sell.
