Will the football team ever reimpose the social media ban?

I know a lot of factors go into winning a national championship but, I will always believe the self-imposed social media ban was a pivotal part of Clemson football's climb up that mountain. I know that would be near impossible now with NIL, but it just seemed like those teams were so much more focused and dedicated than the last few years....

I think your last sentence nailed it. NIL requires marketing, which a lot of them get through SM. No way a self imposed ban happens again IMO.

Not in the NIL era. The ban had nothing to do .....

That was one of the cornerstones of being all in.

Hard work and coaching > talent and no work

Re: Not in the NIL era. The ban had nothing to do .....

Aug 30, 2023, 8:27 AM

That's really not true. Someone with talent who then works hard and has great coaching will be better than someone with talent who doesn't. But talent will always win out. I played ball with 6 different NFL players. Two of the best were extremely lazy, but their talent just far surpassed anyone else. If you're naturally faster and stronger than everyone else, you'll be better. Look at how many self-centered QBs are in the NFL. How many Chase Brices? Your idea might be "feel good," but it's also demonstrably false

I 110% agree that our best teams were off social media..

but believe Coach can’t even think about going back to those days due to how the world has changed socially & politically..

what with players now being independent agents and not pawns to any authority thus the term “team” takes on another meaning.

Do you?

This year will determine if Dabo stays or walks off. If the Colorado and Free Shoes can buy players that even the NFL can’t do, we are scrod, if I can use the superlative subjunctive.

As long as that is the prevalent, overarching, thought, then it will not change. I dont agree that they HAVE to be on social media. It is achoice they have to make, as a team

I am afraid we are fully into the generation now that was

Aug 28, 2023, 9:57 AM

born with a cell phone attached to their ear. That addiction seems to be more powerful than drugs. And it's not in any way limited to kids. Our church service gets interrupted nearly every Sunday at least once by somebody's phone chirping with an incoming text or call. The people can't bear to be "out of touch", even for a 45 minute church service.

None of these kids even know they can talk on the phone with it against their ears! It’s all typing and AirPods with mics in them.

I know exactly what you're talking about. Funny thing though is that a majority of the phones that ring in our church belong to people over 65. The most shameful thing I've seen in regards to that was a 70ish year old man who had the gall to answer his phone with "I'm in church, I'll call you back".

Generational talent across the board especially at QB? I'm not hearing any stories about Clemson players creating distractions with controversial social media posts.
The ban really has no impact it was just an example of team cohesiveness; I think we have plenty of that still.

I think the ban had significant impact. The hours PER DAY spent scrolling facebook twitter instagram ect. per player were better spent in other areas of life such as watching film, extra workouts, extra sleep, player bonding, school studying, position studying, playbook review, praying, bible study, even maybe a little dating and so on. You cant tell me the lost time on social media and gained time in personal life wasnt beneficial to each and every college athlete on that team....especially the starters. There are only 24hrs a day and when you waste 1-3 hours on social media EVERY day, not only do they add up, the time spent in other areas decline.

Obviously the generational talent was a massive factor, that im not disputing.

The ban was just for posting on social media they didn't

2

Aug 28, 2023, 10:26 AM

Collect everyones' phones and lock em in a safe until after the season. Let's be honest the players who aren't budgeting their time well didn't magically become great at it because they stopped posting on Twitter a few times a day. They probably found out that they had a little more time to play fortnight.

Negative impact? Game consoles, TV, fried chicken, Netflix, taco bell, movies,...
There are a million distractions in the world if a guy isn't self motivated and bought in it makes zero impact if you take away one of em. And again it was just a posting ban they were still free to scroll for hours at a time if they wished.

I’m not suggesting a ban on anything. I’m simply making the argument that past teams agreed that shutting down social media would be beneficial for the team and their growth. And I believe the proof is in the pudding. It wasn’t “just a posting ban” it was an agreement to stay off the platforms all together.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2548460-clemson-football-bans-players-from-using-social-media-during-regular-season

Heres a good read with quotes from a few former players, before our two recent National Championships.

Not post but who knows. You said the proof is in the pudding and the policy was around since 2012; we didn't even win the division the first three years it was in place. Talent is what changed the policy was a nonfactor.

So the policy went into effect 08/2012...and almost every single Clemson football fan, and most national talking heads all point to the 12/31/2012 LSU win as "THE" turning point in the program. I dont think that's a coincidence. I am not saying that policy was the biggest factor...far from it....but anyone would be naïve to think it didnt play a part at all.

2012 Clemson instates SM policy...program elevates to higest levels in history even starting a mini-dynasty.

2020 Clemson drops policy and after that season hasnt made it back to the CFP since.

Again I know there was a major drop in talent and coaching which was the ultimate factor, but I still beleive the social media distraction plays a role in performance. DJU wasnt that bad of a player...I think his issues were 1000% mental...and social media has been proven to have a negative impact on mental heath. Who knows, maybe he could have blocked out all the crap and played lights out....we will never know.

If you go back, the bammer team of 2018 was labeled as the "greatest of all time". Their D was stacked with talent. I completely disagree with the idea that no one else had the same talent

I think the last couple teams have just been less talented

1

Aug 28, 2023, 11:07 AM

but people are looking for other things to pin the blame on. Talent and coaching win CFB games. The last couple of seasons have seen shakeup in the coaching staff and a drop off in talent on the offensive side of the ball.

yep. The early 2010s teams had the social media ban also

Aug 28, 2023, 2:29 PM

If players cannot use social media how will they send me my "digital football collectibles". (Yes, this is a real thing$)

How will they get a commission if I order the weight lifting supplement on Instagram they endorse? (Yes this is happening)

Gotta hand it to some these guy for figuring out how to run a business.

Head over to instagram and look up players on every team. All over the nation. This is the game now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was player led and should be again.

Aug 28, 2023, 3:04 PM

We have an NIL department that helps them post stuff....that department can still help manage that aspect of it and the players can self ban themselves for the season.
