Marine, but I’ll bite. Used to laugh at the rulz. I could carry an M-16 with 7 loaded mags, but had to keep my over-under Browning Citori in the armory. The military does go out of their way to enforce the unofficial motto “We’re not smart, and you can’t make us!”

I can’t approve my own $2,000 expense account but I spent $15,000,000 last year on projects. Just the way it is. Nothing to see here.

Thank you for posting that. I will not talk politics on this board. (I have other forums where I do that.)
I had never seen that video before. It was both very enlightening and very troubling.

Don’t watch the Russian or Chinese recruiting video….that makes the U.S. one even more troubling.

A 120lb with a rainbow background GI Jane with intellect and reflexes likely can operate a missile defense system better than a 6'4" 240lb meat head.

The elephant in the room is that what's happening to the Russians in the Ukraine is the same thing that would happen to us if we fought a true near peer war with similar equipment. There just isn't a lot you can do when you have drones dropping mortars on you from above and laser guided missiles firing at your dug in tanks.
We've been blessed the last 20 years to be fighting people with no where near the capabilities we have.

First off, the US wouldn't be dumb enough to "dig in" our tank. The primary advantage of armour is speed and mobility. That's negated by fixing it in place.
Second, the game changer for the US military vs the Russian military is Air Power. How Russia doesn't have air superiority over the battlespace 8 months later is a mystery to me. Air Support changes EVERYTHING.

This post just reeks of overconfidence and not recognizing the realities of the situation. Why don't they have air superiority? Because the Ukrainians have first world air defense systems and air assets of their own. We have/had air superiority over Iraq and Afghanistan because they did not have those assets. It's easy to take over the air space when you're not fighting anyone that can challenge you. That's not the reality of near peer warfare.
How do you conduct defensive operations if your tanks are constantly moving? How does a crew rest if it's moving 24 hours? How does the equipment get properly maintained? Digging in fighting positions is certainly doctrine in the US Army. In fact, in a situation like the Ukraine your tanks are more visible while moving.
You're just caught up in that COIN mentality where we can just ride around on patrols and return to a FOB.

Before either of the Gulf Wars, Iraq had one of the most comprehensive and advanced air defense networks anywhere in the world. We decimated it in a matter of weeks with very few losses of aircraft.

There is a difference in "resting" armor units and "digging them in". I was talking about the later where the Russian Troops essentially turned their armor units into fixed artillery pieces behind earthwork fortifications. We saw the Iraqis try that in '91 and they got routed. (See the battle of 73 easting).

Shows how little you know about our military and practically everything else. Our military, in spite of the huge social experiments that are being cast upon it, remains the best in the world and would crush the Russians in a conventional type war. Their tanks would be toast against our armored units. Our air support would decimate their ground units and installations and we would have superior control of the air space.
PS: This is a 4.2" mortar shooting at night. You don't drop mortars from drones!

The other thing that I forgot to mention is that is where the US military excels compared to everyone else in world is 3 areas.
1) Training. Our solders, sailors, air(wo)men and Marines are the best trained in the world. We are constantly training and working on improvement all the time. 2). Joint/combined force operations. We are the best in the world at integrating combined arms. Our marines know how to fight with the air force. Our soldiers know how to work with the Navy. There are 3 branches of the military, but they would all lay down their lives for their comrades in arms. 3). Command and control/Operation art These two speak to how a battle plan is formulated and how the forces within the battle plan communicate and coordinate with each other. We've had multiple reports during this conflict that Russian troops couldn't communicate with each other, much less other units in their general area.

As someone currently slotted for a deployment in support of our Allies currently conducting combat operations, I can assure that I have a solid grasp of our military capabilities.

ARMY late 70's early 80's missile unit...because of gas masks guys had to cut their hair high and tight. Women could have hair as long as they wanted. When you went to the field officers could take their cars because they always had important things to do back at S1, S2, S3, etc. Enlisted guys E5 and below always stayed in the field.

I’m a retired Army officer with the first 10 years being an enlisted man. Spud’s post is about 2 different issues. Yes, soldiers are given arms, equipment and facilities to use that cost millions while being told how to cut their hair and what is permissible in their barracks rooms. A barracks with many trained soldiers has to be ultra safe. It could be the toaster is deemed a fire hazard and a threat to lives and military readiness. Rooms are also inspected for cleanliness and so on.

I'll tell you the same thing I tell any other "retired" officer that tells anyone within earshot about how well they treated "their" soldiers when they were in charge. I have never been treated so poorly in my life as I was when I was enlisted for 4 years. I only had one superior, an E7, that ever took the time to help me when I was in. Now, I have multiple post secondary degrees and make over $100K per year. I never want to be referred to as "sir".
My honorable discharge is posted above my toilet so that every morning when I take a long pi$$ I know I'm not in the Army.

I always loved the bit in Mash where they wanted a pizza oven and the guy asked how to get it and supply guy rattled off the form number and said cross out machine gun and write in pizza oven.

Oh, yeah, the things we did. In the Mideast Arab countries alcohol was not allowed, but there was a form of medical, drinkable alcohol that the medics could order in 5-gallon cans. It was mixed with grape Kool-aid to create a potent cocktail. I should have bought stock in that company.

A Soldier Unsupervised is The Most Destructive Force on The

Planet. In one of the Platoons I led early in my career, I watched a PFC and Specialist debate if they could run 10 yards and tackle a fawn grazing nearby. Note this was at a State park and the deer were not skittish.
They decided they could and I watched a 40lb fawn break an arm and 3 ribs against 2 dudes. My Company Commander was chastising me for my Platoon getting into fights, but when I explained a deer beat them up he nodded and the unspoken rule of Soldier Destruction took over.
That being said, there is NO other human on the planet I would want in a fight than a US Soldier or Marine, but Lord they are thick headed.

Believe me, I know! I once caught two of my Corporals who were slated for meritorious promotion to Sergeant sneaking back into our compound in Tam Ky in the early morning hours. Of course their promotions were scrapped and their "defense" was that if they knew they were being meritoriously promoted, they would not have sneaked out. Excuse didn't fly!
Nine of my 26 Marines were high school graduates in 1970 ...... far different now. Most were great Marines ..... some not so much ..... but none of them would not have risked their life to save a buddy. Being hard headed is part of what made them great Marines. Honestly, I preferred them in combat to back home on a US base.
