There's just something about Mac's Drive In

Jul 14, 2017, 11:48 PM

I ate there recently, but I am not a regular. Frankly, it's been probably 20 years since I've had a Mac's cheeseburger and fries. It's been too long anyway. Some on here probably have some great stories, here's mine about my recent visit to Mac's.

After I sat down at the counter and ordered my food, I just enjoyed the " old school " everything that I was surrounded with. I'm telling you, just sitting in there and looking around you can tell legends have walked through this little place. It's obvious by all of the awesome old photographs and signatures of players, many have come through that little hole in the wall joint. The food is as good as it was 20 years ago, but of course the best part is being surrounded by memories of your favorite Clemson players, even ones that played way back, stars that have been forgotten to many, but live on in the Walls of Mac's. I remembered the painting of " where champions meet" with Ford and Swinney outside of Mac's. All of the players, all of the games just hit you at once. If you haven't been, and you're a Clemson fan, it's an " old school " treasure chest of Clemson memories.

It's a great place to grab lunch, or dinner. However, the best part is the experience you get when you are sitting in a small little place where legends have met and made their place in Clemson history and on the walls of Mac's.

Ted became the owner from Mac a long time ago . Ted told me you had to put "a little suet in the beef to make a good hamburger " .

yea, I had seen where the customer beside me had come in just for a milkshake. Looked a lot better than that stuff at the BK drive through that's for sure.

No commentary on original OP. Your you tube news reference posts amuse me sometimes, but sometimes they don't. This would be one of those times.

The reason they asked about milkshakes is because the staff at Mac's is notorious for getting highly annoyed if you ask for a milkshake.

They act like they don't have time to make it.

I lived right down the street.

While it certainly is a historic place, the food is average at best and the service kinda sucks.

It's been a while since I have been though.

Mac made me a Milkshake once

He was pissed. But he did it, grumbled the entire time. I didn't know any of the stories regarding it, but I thought it was funny to hear I wasn't the only one they hated making a milkshake for.

I ate there once. Can't say it stood out to me as far as great food and service. Probably just average all around. I don't remember ever thinking it was somewhere I had to go back to and eat again someday.

Haven't been to Mac's since I graduated back in 2000

I'm a simple man to please. I love the crushed ice and sweet tea. The atmosphere is pretty nostalgic and I enjoyed my experiences there.

I guess the last couple of times I went was a bad day then.
The burgers use to be pretty good but on a good day AVG at best now.

That's it!

I'm going to drive 2 hours today just to get some Mac's.

I used to tear Macs up

Jul 15, 2017, 9:41 AM

Really loved the place and the old school Clemson feel. Used to just kinda write off the service and enjoy it but I can't do it anymore.

It's like they don't want you to eat there. The last I heard no one had a gun to ### hat Teddys head so if he doesn't want to run a restaurant he can shut it down. That annoying mouth breather insults customers left and right.

Let's see:
No refills 90% of the time
Terribly slow service for a max of 15 or so customers
Nasty look of scorn on all employees
The whole milkshake thing
Cash only

And remember all of this goes out the window if you live in the great town of Pendleton- then help yourself behind the counter while regular paying customers wait and wait and wait for a sniff of service .

The last time I went I told my self it would be a long time before I went back. Had just left a baseball game and had about 30 minutes until a basketball game started. Decided to head over there for a quick burger between them (or so I thought). Sat down with one other person, there were maybe 4 other people in there and Pat was working with 3 of the young Goobers they employ. They walked past me about 20 times and after 10 minutes of not being acknowledged we got up and walked out.

I agree the hamburgers are sub-par. But the cheeseburger steak with gravy is worth its weight in cholesterol. Macs was a weekly spot for my friends and me from 2000-2004. Pat was alright to deal with back then, but I think he had a crush on my roommate's girl (which elevated the level of service we got). We actually would get a kick out of pi$$ing off Cyclops (Ted) during lunch hours by asking him for a milkshake.

However, it was always a treat to me to get to talk with Mac. My freshman year, I asked Mac for a straw, and his response was something I will never forget. He brought me the straw, laid it down by my sweet tea and said, "I don't know why you would want one of those sissy sticks?" I chuckled and asked him why he called it a "sissy stick". His reply was awesome - "Have you ever seen someone who looked manly sipping out of a straw? Of course not, it's impossible!!!"
We all laughed about how right he was and I couldn't bring myself to drink out of the straw that he had given me.
From that point on, the only time I would use a straw at Macs was when I ordered a chocolate milkshake!!! Love those memories.

I started going to Macs way back in the mid 60s

Jul 15, 2017, 6:13 PM

I've always enjoyed it.

To me, Macs has always been what it is ... a typical small diner with tasty (if greasy) burgers, hot dogs and fries.

It's never been a place that tried to please everybody and I can see why a certain thin-skinned person with high expectations might not be particularly enamored with either the environment or the food.

Fortunately, nobody goes around with a gun herding people to Macs and forcing them to eat there.

I have been wondering if the place was still open. I remember going in 74-78 and it was worth the drive. Of course there weren't a lot of choices in 74. On one visit I had left my wallet in the dorm, at the amusement of my buddies. What made it worse, it was before I had a car and I was forced to sit and watch them eat. Mac overheard us, set me up with berger, fries & coke. He put my name on the ticket and held it until the next time I came in. When he set it behind the counter there were several others. Stand up guy. Any one else have this happen ?
