Stay with me on this:
See DJ's latest IG post and connect the dots btw that and his "gift" of noise cancellers to the rest of the team.
When he pooped the bed last season, he shut down his IG channel. Went radio silent.
Now, a week before kickoff, here he comes with the new messaging:
DJ, reinvented. This time, him against the haters.
He's groundbreaking, in a way. The first Tiger athlete I can remember who walked on campus with "Entreprenuer" as his IG bio.
And now, I see whats been eating at me for two years: Its never been about DJ elevating Clemson, per se. Its been about Clemson elevating DJ and his brand.
Sure - DJ's a nice kid and works hard. And wins are good. And he may pull down a few before he's gone.
Forget about CFP-caliber results, though. He doesnt have the head game for it.
Whats scary is he knows it.
And with Klubnik holding the clipboard, he's thinking waaaay beyond football.
Cant and dont blame DJ.
I admire him in a way - he's a savvy marketer who knows he's a bad game or torn ACL away from tossed on the scrap heap with nothing but a "it's been real" and a B.A. to show for it.
But the naive, middle-aged purist in me hates seeing it for what it is: being QB of a top-flight program is just a business opportunity.
And in a culture that raises kids to worship wealth and notoriety, it's kinda where we're at.

He will not have the luxury of being below average this year. We have at least two options ready; one of which has a ton of experience. Last year, we really had no backup to go to.

I also want to get behind 5,but unlike the opener last season this is a conference game against a non ranked opponent.
Pretty much sums up the season if you lose this one.

Really it's not even Cade's job to win. It's DJ's job to lose. If he doesn't perform ,Cade or one of the 2 Hunters will get the chance.\
Eat another bag of Doritos,change underwear and realize ,your kind don't matter any longer

I’m going to stay behind this guy till he proves he’s not able to do it. If the coaches believe them so will I. This is not last year we have more than one bullet in the gun this time.

I did see in a recent photo he wasn’t glossing himself with the BIG CINCO bling ….. at least in that picture.
We aren’t haters - he wasn’t good last year. He wasn’t good at all.

more so the degree. DJ is certainly smart enough to know if he doesn’t perform, there is no gain in his best interest. Seems pretty simple.

Yeah - I think I’m thinking the OP is way off base. This kid wants to excel, he certainly thinks he has everything needed to bring home to Clemson THE hardware, and he isn’t thinking about failing.
He realizes that he can’t buy into all the noise & hype. He was buying into all that last year and fell flat on his face in front of millions of people. He was / is young - he learned - he’s approaching it differently this year.
He’s had ONE post in a year - he’s NOT a self-aggrandizing hype machine.
Hope he clicks at 100% all year. Gonna be fun if he does.
CLICKS is the wrong word to use here - lol. I hope he is firing on all cylinders right outta the gate until the last snap of the National Championship Game. If it does happen that way - would surely be another HUGE feather in the “We aughta just trust Dabo” hat. A tremendous story of redemption.

Nice analysis, but I would submit that your idea of Dj as a marketing machine might be closer to the truth if you said the culprit was Big Dave, rather than DJ himself (a la the Ball family, Lorenzo et al). DJ's dad seems to fit that description better than DJ.

but the NIL $ from sponsorship, fancy clothes, Dad's overwhelming social prominence, maybe not tight with teammates, had flaws in footwork & seeing the field 100%, separation of parents and then Georgia's D working him over, injuries..
DJ became very average to say the least.
Gonna find out his inner stuff soon!
