I'd give anything for how I felt before 2016 NC..

Most of us sensed it, but few knew how it would end.

Let's go Tigers.

Let's play free in 23.

And I bet some of the dip ##### on here constantly criticizing Coach Swinney was btchn before the final drive.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

Are you speaking of the final drive that Dabo went along with the little trap play that Jeff Scout called with just 6 seconds on the clock!!!

The same coach that Dabo taught everything he knows and as soon as he was out from under Dabos wings looked as if he couldn’t coach his way out of a paper bag. Tony is looking the exact same.

Reality is Dabo has his hands on everything in the program and is literally the primary reason for all the success we’ve had.

Coaching ability isn't the problem for Jeff Scott and Tony Elliott. Talent level is.

Thanks for posting this. Lots of memorable plays but I had forgotten how clutch that catch from Leggett was.

Also, that return from CJ Fuller to set us up was historic. I'm glad that young man took that memory with him to heaven.

Rest in Peace, CJ...

At the tail end of the 5 year run by South Carolina you could sense that something special was being built.

Yes most Clemson fans sensed it. We had unfinished business.

Especially with all of the key returning pieces we had from a team that beat Alabama in every way except the scoreboard in the previous NCG. The main player responsible for the coverage busts that caused that loss was no longer on the team and Watson&co would not be denied. We all knew coming into the season that the NC was ours to lose and we almost blew it with the Pitt debacle. However we overcame that loss and found ourselves on top of the mountain (where we belonged) when it was all said and done. If anyone didn’t sense it I would really have to call into question their passion for Clemson football and how much they were actually following the program at the time.

That was the only time I made the decision as a mom to take my child out of school when she wasn't sick. We barely stayed ahead of the ice storm driving to FL that Friday night, but I kept thinking it had been 35 years since the 1981 championship and it could be another 35 years before the next one. She got a text over the weekend that school was canceled for Monday (which later turned into the whole week) and that made me feel even more that we were supposed to be there. As we got on the toll road from Orlando to Tampa I thought "I'm gonna cry if we lose." At the six second mark of the game I thought "I'm gonna cry if we win." My husband wanted to beat the crowd and get out of the stadium, but when Tiger Band started playing "Eye of the Tiger" I knew we could do it! I still love the fact that everyone who had been key players all season had important roles in that last drive.

I always knew we could do it, but doing it takes circumstances and some things working out. Nobody knew that was going to happen. There are years where the best team doesn't win it all in sports. There are so many factors. It all just clicked perfectly. Amazing.

We all knew we were capable. We had a great team. We weren't the only great team. It worked out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

All of what you say is true.

1

Aug 27, 2023, 12:39 PM

Sensing something doesn’t necessarily mean it will happen but you had to have been feeling the same as most of us. We simply believed that the 2016 team could do it. We sensed that they would. We could’ve been wrong but we weren’t. Any Clemson fan who didn’t sense it was not following the team close enough or just simply being cynical.

I knew we were capable. I followed it asmuch or more than anyone. I didn't know if it would happen. We weren't the only good team. It sports. Did we blow them out in that last game? Came down to 1 play at the end. Nobody knew that would happen. That's part of what made it legendary.

Splitting hairs, but I am with ya. Anything could have happened. You expected magic to happen. Deshaun was that type of QB. There was a chance.

I knew we could hang with Bama, we'd proven that the year before. They were lucky in 2015, it took a fluky perfectly executed onside pooch kick to beat us. Maybe not one in a million, but one in a hundred. That ball dropped over his shoulder like a Montana to Rice fade.

I figured we'd play em close again in 2016 and somehow lose. Another fluky trick play, some questionable calls late, etc. Some how, some way we'd come up short. Thank God I was wrong. I fell on the floor and had tears in my eyes after the Renfrow catch.

It’s one of those moments where you’ll never forget where you were and who you were with. I remember jumping on my husband and we both were screaming with excitement…I was born a Tiger so of course I was crying like a baby. Praying for a season just like 2016!

We went to the game in Arizona the year before and I was heartbroken after that game because I knew we could have won that game but for some bad plays on our part. We went to Tampa the next year and I knew we could hang with them but wasn’t so confident about beating them but I was hopeful that we would. My heart dropped when Bama scored their last touchdown with about 2 minutes left. Our winning drive was just pure perseverance by our team and especially Deshaun. That cat just never gave up. We really owe him for his fantastic playing and leadership while at Clemson.

… go into OT after we kicked the FG to tie.

And I was not sure we could beat Bama in OT.

IMHO only Leggett’s incredible snag of a poorly thrown ball from Watson saved us from going through the agony of overtime and a possible loss.

But thankfully those guys were LEGENDARY and my long established pessimism was unfounded.

I was the opposite... I was confident going into what wound up being the two losses against Alabama (2015, 2017 seasons) and did not think we had a chance in 2016 and 2018 and was just hoping we would at least keep the score close and respectable going into the two wins against them.

After coming close this year I think some of us will feel that way again next year. Yes , we will have some question marks but the two dynamic WRs we are bringing in will make a world of difference.

It. Was. Epic.

Jordan Legget with his insane leaping catch inside the 10 is what impressed me the most on the final drive. Hunter's catch for the TD was a comparatively easy one.

The game winner happened right in front of us. We were 14 rows up in the end zone seats, on that side. One of the only times I was happy we had crappy seats. :)

I always tried to enjoy those days because we had never seen them before and time is fleeting. Happy I got to experience it in my lifetime and if we can ever duplicate that success again it will just be the cherry on top of a great run for Clemson football.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I'd give anything for how I felt before 2016 NC..

Aug 27, 2023, 4:30 PM

I remember saying at halftime that we had played as poorly as we did and were not too far behind. I did feel confident.

But more than anything else I remember the pure joy I felt in 2015 and 2016 as we won game after game and just built the momentum. You just felt good going into every game. I’d say it was more confidence and hope than it was an expectation. I think too many of us now have expectations instead of hopeful confidence. I’m going to try to get back to that feeling this season.
