We do not need to rely on transfers to build our football program. There have been several teams in the past few years that have relied on it too much and flopped, such as the Clemson basketball program.

No one wants us to pull half our roster out of the portal. However, we would absolutely benefit from picking up two or three key guys to fill holes.

A couple of good OL and a speedy receiver with good hands and route running ability would be great.
A cover corner or two would be nice as well.

Agreed. Great teams are built by great players. We mustn't forget that. Great QB's are always coupled with great teams. Great RB's too. Clemson needs more 5-star recruits indeed.

Ding ding ding. I would like to at least replace starters that transfers out with portal players. Nobody says we want to build our team with portal players.
I read a stat the other day that we are the inly division 1A team without a incoming portal player. I didnt fact check, but it would make sense.

but that is not possible because everybody knows if you break the (2) transfer barrier then you're required to take no less than 40, and 40+ for the following 5 seasons. You either go full TP or zilch. Self mandated precept that only applies to Clemson–

Transfers. Where is this coming from???
It’s not all or none! But we are in the NONE category now and it’s hurting us.
We keep backfilling with true freshman EVERY YEAR! When we lose talent that is college ready.
That is the problem. That’s why we are always young.

For every position we have at all costs. I would love for us to get a transfer or two to plug some key holes. But using it to get players from every single position is outrageous. In terms of you being a straw man, you take everyone’s valid points against Brad and twist them to make it seem like they hate Clemson/Clemson basketball. That’s what being a straw man is.

You're right. We shouldn't rely on transfers to build our team. But we should utilize the portal as the other "Elite" teams have. If us being special and not using it still had Clemson as a top 5 program then Id say to heck with it. We don't need it. We are still elite without it.
BUT we are now a fringe top 25 team. I think we absolutely need to stop taking lower 3* at the end of the recruiting cycle and use those spots for portal players. We also need to go all in on the portal when we actual do recruit players. Not just throwing offers out and not truly commit to getting a portal player.

Setting aside the buried lede

which of course was the potshot at CUMBB you buried at the bottom, it's too early to say whether a program can build a sustainable winner through the portal.
Primetime used it to restart a failing program. And it flamed out early on him. However, anyone should be willing to give him a couple of two or three seasons to see where it goes.

It is shortcut method to win instantly, and in the long haul, it doesn't work. Great dynasties are built from the ground up, and the first 1-3 years can be tough. Despite that, it is always wise to plant a positive "seed " like a farmer and let the crop enlarge. Coach K did that at Duke in hoops in the 1980s, and look at what he accomplished-- 5 Nat'l titles. The transfer portal is like a mirage-- it looks great from a distance, but when you get closer to it and arrives, it disappears. It's a Quick-fix, a bandage on a bullet wound, and coaches are being wooed by it. Players are so absorbed by this vision of wanting get a chance to play in the NFL that they're not understanding or seeing how important loyalty, character and finishing the course of what they started is. A very deceptive mode of success is what it is.

To be honest, BB and the men's program has failed, but so have the Women's hoops. Clean out the house and get NEW Men's' and Women's BB head coaches.
