WRs... again

20

Aug 30, 2023, 10:24 AM

Anyone else find it amazing that Trevor played so well in 2020 with those WRs on the roster? He posted his best passer rating and completion percentage. He also had 24 TDs vs 5 INTs. But look at who he was throwing the ball to...

Amari Rodgers: cut from three teams
Cornell Powell: practice squad
EJ Williams (flashed)
Brannon Spector (mediocre)
Frank Ladson (hurt)
Joseph Ngata (hurt)

I have a feeling that our WRs last year were probably as good as that 2020 group. Ngata will most likely be a multi-year practice squad guy just like Cornell. Beaux and Antonio were young, but they'll both play in the NFL. EJ and Spector were older. Randall and Cole. Plus, we were much better at TE with Davis and Briningstool.

Our WRs have faced a lot of criticism that last two seasons. But I believe we are about to find out real quick that they weren't the problem. I have a feeling that this group, if they can stay healthy, will shock some people. Cade and Riley are massive upgrades from DJ and Streeter/Tony. And I can't wait to watch.

Good QB’s throw a guy open on occasion and DJ can’t pull the trigger on a tight window. I agree with better QB play the WR’s on the current roster will be fine.

This WR group will be better than that 2020 group. No reason why Cade shouldn't excel with that group + Riley as his OC. I'm becoming increasingly more optimistic about this offense every day.

Good QBs throw WRs open and Good Offensive coordinators scheme WRs open. That’s 2 things Clemson has been missing.

Kudos to the team we had no giant media blow up, but there was no chemistry between stonefoot and the team

This ☝️

I agree … especially after watching the first few drives against Chapel Hill in the ACC championship last year..

The locker room was not cohesive..

EJ Williams gave an interview about him losing faith/confidence in the coaches (assuming Streeter). Dabo said basically implied the same thing with Eric and Kelly. Cade even talked about repping 80+ plays every week last year.

The scheme wasn’t great and they were repping way too many plays, never becoming truly great at anything.

And then DJ was painfully inconsistent. The WRs couldn’t overcome his accuracy deficiencies.

Sounds like that all changes this year. Riley brings in a great scheme and confidence. Cade has accuracy at all 3 levels.

WRU is coming back. Especially with Wesco and Moore otw.

I 100% agree with this comment. There is a night and day difference in playing wide receiver (I was one) with an accurate quarterback and an inaccurate one. Firstly, you only get a fraction of the total throws thrown to you, so you want to make every one of them count. Secondly, when you look for the ball and the ball is there, no problem. But when you turn and look for the ball and you have to be ready to move around to get to it, then you can't do those little speed changes in your routes or turning right shoulder vs left shoulder to block out the DB. You have to play the route honestly, because you just don't know that the ball will be where it is supposed to be. Anyway, I am glad to see others on here acknowledging what we were all seeing, but most of us were just too considerate of DJ's fragile psyche to say otherwise.
I wish the kid well, but I am also glad it is over.

ETN became a legit weapon as a receiver …

Aug 30, 2023, 10:32 AM

… those passes helped TLs percentage a great deal.

Also, Rogers and Powell matured and bloomed at the right time. Hard to not give props to guys who made it to the NFL.

But, I get your point about no generational go-to WRs available for Lawrence in 2020.

Something Shipley needs to sharpen up if he wants to make it next level. I do not even know how Mafah is on catching the ball. When he comes in seeing he don’t get as many touches he mainly runs.

I believe Beaux, Antonio, and Randall all have higher NFL potential than what Amari and Cornell have shown.

And I believe Cade makes that obvious this year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

IMO, the situation took the starch out of their britches.

We had a QB who couldn't make any decision after the ball was snapped. DJ determine which 'option,' he would take before the snap. When our coaches realized this, sometime before the end of the previous season, they decided; If anyone is going to guess what our opponent's defense is going to do it's not going to be a brain dead quarterback.

So they called option plays with a predetermined option. You can't call that an option. The coaches had an option but the QB didn't.

That takes the heart out of all the receivers except the primary. DJ seemed fairly good at hitting the checkdown man but he was almost always under duress when he took that outlet.

Imo, DJ caused deep-seated issues and I continue to believe that Dabo played him long in those games to make him attractive to someone/anyone who would take him off our hands.

I wish him well but I pray for those depending on him to run their offense.

DJ, even not under duress, threw more ducks than spirals. Not as easy to catch the wobbly ones as a tight spiral!!!

To be fair...

Peyton Manning never threw perfect spirals either...

One series in the NC State game last year pretty much summed up DJ for the year!

1st Down ...... flare pass to Shippley thrown behind him, so he had to slow down and turn around for the catch ..... result ..... gain of about 1 yard

2nd down ........ 3 yard run up the middle

3rd down ...... slot receiver on the left breaks across the middle, not a defender within 5 yards and DJ throws it 5 yards over his head.

That first simple pass the coaches tried to give him against UNC wasn’t even close and I’m thinking the receiver (cannot remember who) was wide open. What did he miss like his first 3-4 throws in that game?

Bank of America stadium and DJ were not a good combination.

It was Ngata. And they called the same play to start the 2nd half. Cade completed it for like a 7 yard gain.

I seem to recall a different tune from you last season. Maybe i dont remember correctly.

Imo DJ was the biggest issue first and foremost. His lack of decisiveness in an rpo reliant system was an issue and the fact that when routes were ran in the middle of the field he was gun shy really hurt the offense. WRs can be headcases if things are going poorly very few wrs can keep it together and plug along with out losing control of their emotions, DJ consistently over/under throwing them left them beyond frustrated. Separation is not always going to be by 5 yards, Ngata had leverage on guys most the time last year and DJ would completely miss it or misfire. Some blame can def go to Streeter as the QB coach for failing to develop DJ, but i think we saw DJs ceiling last year with or without proper coaching.

I was optimistic about DJ having a much better season, compared to 2021, heading into last season. And to his credit, he did. But he just wasn't consistent enough and Steeter did him no favors. I was really rooting for DJ to have success. More so than any Clemson player since I've been a fan. It just didn't work out for him.

This year, I'm rooting for XT over everyone. We are all ready to see him reach his potential.
