Was ND Penalized Only 5 Yards When Lawson Was Held/Tackled?

(long time/first time) It looks like it to me - see the 3rd and 8 play with 5:18 left in the 2nd quarter (1:01:38 on tigerray's video). The line of scrimmage was the 34 at the beginning of the play, then the 29 after a "10 yard penalty." Or am I missing something?

Nope - we accepted it. And the QB would have had a first down had we declined the penalty.

I've been wondering the same thing.
The play resulted in a long run by Kizer for a first down, so we did take the penalty. It was previously 3rd and 8, but after the penalty it was 3rd and 13. Instead of 3rd and 18. They almost picked it up.

I thought the same thing when it happened. I just figured it was a spot foul or something because no one else said anything about it around me.

Yep - ref's screwed that one up. It was a 3rd and 8 play, ball on the Notre Dame 35. Shaq was held (more like tackled) at the Notre Dame 27 when they threw the flag. After assessing the penalty the ball was placed on the 30 yard line (only 5 yards from the previous line of scrimmage where it should have been 10 yards and placed on the 25 yard line). The next play Notre Dame had a 3rd and 13. I was in the stands complaining to the wife when it happened that the refs got the penalty yardage wrong - kind of surprised that Dabo and our coaching staff didn't catch it and jump on the refs about it at the time.

Sad thing is that's the only time holding was called, it was so blatant Ray Charles could see it they had to call it. Could of and should have been called many many times, like when Kisser dropped back to pass and Santa came to see him he had so much time. Go Tigers

Here is the Play BY Play

1st and 10 at ND 33
C.J. Prosise run for a loss of 7 yards to the NDame 26
2nd and 17 at ND 26
DeShone Kizer pass complete to Will Fuller for 14 yds to the NDame 40
3rd and 3 at ND 40
NOTRE DAME Penalty, False Start (Mike McGlinchey) to the NDame 35
3rd and 8 at ND 35
DeShone Kizer run for 5 yds to the NDame 40 NOTRE DAME Penalty, Offensive Holding (Quenton Nelson) to the NDame 30
3rd and 13 at ND 30
C.J. Prosise run for 8 yds to the NDame 38
4th and 5 at ND 38
Tyler Newsome punt for 33 yds, downed at the Clem 29
Apparently even though the holding would have likely prevented the play from gaining any yards, they enforced the penalty from the end of the run, and not from the line of scrimmage or the point of the infraction.

the refs screwed the pooch on that one. The holding was in the backfield, not down the field after the QB ran so there's no way that shouldn't have been 10 yards from the original LOS.
