The hit on Lawrence
Sep 30, 2018, 1:18 PM
|
|
.....was not a "clean" one. Once he tripped on the sidelines and was obviously falling down he became a defenseless player. The Syracuse player targeted TL's head. He did not lead with his helmet but he was still targeting. I don't like the targeting rule personally. However, if it is there they need to enforce it.

It was not dirty , it was a hard hit and he lead with his shoulder. The defender was trying to stop a first down , he can’t help TL was tripping and out of control. The play was a bust from the beginning and TL must learn to get down or throw the ball away .

An Ohio St. player got thrown out of the game last night for an almost exact type hit.

It could have been called but I don’t think it was dirty The defender was just making a play , TL was out of control. If TL is not falling down it would have been a text book tackle

Correct. It doesn't have to be intentional either, which in this case I don't think it was.

We all have our opinions, but when a qb runs he is just that, a runner. Just cause you’re a top qb recruit with flowing locs and a laser rocket arm doesn’t change that. That guy had every right and position to blast TL as he was clearly trying to gain extra yards.

I tend to agree. If the intention is to protect a defenseless player, then TL was textbook defenseless. The hit was only made in order to punish (cause injury)... It served no other purpose

No he wasn't. Defenseless is defined by the rule. Defenseless is:
- A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass. - A receiver attempting to catch a forward pass or in position to receive a backward pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier. - A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return. - A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick, or one who has completed a catch or recovery and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier. - A player on the ground. - A player obviously out of the play. - A player who receives a blind-side block. - A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped. - A quarterback any time after a change of possession. - A ball carrier who has obviously given himself up and is sliding feet-first
Which one of these does "a ball carrier stumbling forward head first" fall into?

I've seen targeting calls made in which the player being hit didn't fit into any of those categories. In those cases, I've always assumed the refs were making a decision based on the "spirit of the rule" instead of the "letter of the law" I feel sure that if it was Christian Wilkins making that exact hit, it would have been called, and the announcers would have been explaining how a shoulder driven into the head/neck region results in targeting.

Targeting does not require a defenseless player. Targeting can also be leading with the crown of the helmet with an indicator, but if you want to argue defenseless player that is clearly defined in the targeting rule.

I’m all in but TL has to get out of bounds and not take chances like that. Not a dirty hit.Syracuse out played our guys the first half.I don’t know why but they did.Their defense rushed three and sacked out qb.Whats with that?

Technically he was out of bounds.... therefore a late hit or unsportsmanlike.... anyway you cut it.... a flag would have been appropriate

Wrong...yes he went out of bounds, as could be seen on replay video. The defense player did not have the benefit of video. What was missing was a referee's blowing the whistle when he stepped out of bounds. Players are taught to continue the play until the whistle is blown. That is why the defender can continue the play on the runner, who happened to be the QB. The play had not been blown dead. The refs missed seeing him step out until the replay...that was the bad call...not the hit.

My take is that it was late. Watch the replay and it shows Babers and an assistant pointing to where he went out of bounds. That was four yards back of where he took the hit. The stripes were pretty inept all day, so I didn’t really expect them to get that right either.

I believe the fact that it would be called targeting on 90% of similar hits makes me frustrated that and probably many holding calls are going uncalled for this club. Kinda reminds me of the hits Cam Newton takes with no calls. Seems in both cases, the refs have a higher standard for Clemson than every other team we play. Dabo, AD, and Prez need to be having a discussion with the ACC office.

The guy knew he was going to hit TL's head with the shoulder pad. A dirty play, regardless if it was legal or not.

Exactly. It was late and to his head. It should have at least been personal foul

TL has already stepped out (unknowingly to the defender) and he was falling down/already fallen down. It deserved at least a personal foul. Better believe if it was us against Dungey we’d be thrown out of the game.

It was a clean, textbook tackle on Syracuse player's part.
TL was not a defenseless quarterback as if he were in the midst of throwing the ball or completing a throw; as soon as he started to run - he was a runner and is free game. In addition, he was not a defenseless WR who was going up into the air to catch a pass as a receiver. He became a runner and is fair game for tackling.
LT is a true freshman who has a bit to learn. He should have stepped out of bounds earlier OR slid feet first.

Are you saying that there is no targeting on RB's? I mean, they are always runners. That assertion is stupid.

There is targeting on RBs so long as they fit one of the criteria for a defenseless player.

orange colored glasses. Even the most unbiased attempt says that was targeting. Trevor was 7 yards away from the defender when he started going down and became "defenseless" (He was 10 yards away when he stepped out of bounds, see where the coach is pointing). The defended dropped his shoulder, pulled his right foot forward to brace/launch into the head and neck area. Everything about this call was targeting in my opinion.

they immediately spotted the ball back 10 yards without reviewing it so an official had to see him step out. Which, I think the refs should be disciplined for as well, part of their job is to keep the players safe. If he saw him step out, immediately blow the whistle. If the game is too fast for them, then maybe they should not be out on the field.
The defense for all of this is that it all happened within 1.5 seconds or so, but all targeting hits take less than a second or so.

I don’t understand the verbiage in the rules about “defenseless player”. What is the purpose of the rule? Is it only intended as a special protection for “defenseless players”? Why not protect all of the players from head shots? The way the rule is written I can’t tell when it Is OK and when it isn’t OK to tee off on someone’s head.
So, EXACTLY...........when is it legal to tee off on someone’s head?

The hit was clean since TL was going forward with his body low to the ground. The defender has every right to try to stop him. The defender went low to actually try to hit him and stop him... that just happened to be where TLs head was. It was a perfectly fine hit.

Kirk Herbstreit definition of targeting
Sep 30, 2018, 9:17 PM
|
|
This was him explaining targeting on another call that was similar to Trevor’s.
“For a guy that clearly doesn’t understand the rule you’re fairly aggressive there Danno-So you know-if the runner is considered “defenseless” the defender doesn’t need to hit him with the crown of his helmet-Any body part to the head is a foul-So Pryor’s shoulder counts as a foul”
