I imagine James Trapp, Airese Curry, Mike Belamy, Jacoby Ford, CJ, Sammy Watkins all would be on the list.

I'm not disputing that he's the fastest Clemson player ever,

but i think the 4.21 forty is certainly a bit suspect. The fastest 40 time ever recorded at the NFL combine since electronic timing was implemented in 1999 is 4.24. Rondel Menendez (who?) and Chris Johnson share that record. Only 13 players have ever ran sub 4.30 with another 4 hitting 4.3 flat.
The fastest Clemson players on that list are Jacoby Ford (4.28) and Tye Hill (4.30).

I could see the 12 or 13 offense
Aug 4, 2015, 3:35 PM

With the 14 defense, I'm partial to the 12 because of Ellington and Hopkins but the 13 was also a highly effective unit. 11 had flashes but fundamentally it never seemed like the well oiled machine we saw in 12 and 13. The numbers may not back that up I would be curious to see 11 12 and 13 offensive numbers, and not just the one or two stats that support either argument.

Note Spiller and Watkins did not make the top 5. I'm sure Charone Peak would be in the mix as well, as Dabo said he was the fastest on the team a few years ago (faster than Watkins). Mind you, we're talking straight-line, timed 40 yd dash.

I still contend Spiller is faster than his official time at the combine. He ran in the 4.2's unofficially but he had a funky start and that's all it take to tack on .1 to a laser-timed start.

other official or otherwise reliable times, and I'd think all were taken into consideration.
Look, CJ certainly appeared to be faster than any of them to me, but I understand that appearances can be deceiving and that different factors can make guys look faster than they really are. Besides, all of the ones mentioned are incredibly fast, and the differences between the fastest and the slowest is really negligible.

Jacoby would motor pass CJ on a lot of CJ runs. Granted he wasn't carrying the ball, but he could really run.

National champ in the 60M dash and tied for the 4th best 40 time in the NFL combine all time behind Chris Johnson, Dri Archer, and Marquise Goodwin with a 4.28. (Tye Hill is tied for 7th with a 4.3 flat)

I think its more like 2012 offense + 2014 defense
Aug 4, 2015, 12:32 PM
|
|
Our offense had a great start in 2011 but towards the end of the season they started to fall apart (turnovers, OL injures, etc.). Our offense in 2012 was one of the best in Clemson history, if not the best.

but that's primarily because the team was more in synch with The Chad in 2012 and Tajh was more experienced.
The OL was a wash between the two years.
But 2011 had Dwayne Allen, who was irreplaceable in any argument, and Bellamy (for spurts). Also Peake was healthier early, and Sammy wasn't nearly the same player in 2012 as 2011.
For pure talent, 2011 was the year.

Tajh wasn't as good that year though, and neither was Nuk.
Aug 4, 2015, 2:13 PM
|
|
Despite losing Allen and Sammy missing games injured, Tajh still threw for just as many yards on 72 less attempts. We were able to run the ball more in 2012 as well.
Sure we lost a great player with Allen leaving, but that was more than made up by the extra experience and maturity for all the talent that returned.
Also, it's a little uncanny just how consistent Boyd was from year to year. His 2012 and 2013 season numbers are almost identical with 2013 being just ever so slightly better.

field speed or clocked track speed
Aug 4, 2015, 2:20 PM

Field speed a guy like Watkins is higher up there than clocked track speed or combine speed. Field speed Anthony Simmons was higher than most realize.
Clocked speed you should be able to make a concrete list but I think times have to come from an official meet or a combine. No college or high schools "hey guys coach said I ran a 4.2".

as I said: stats were better in 2012

- The Chad: an extra year - Tajh: an extra year - OL: an extra year.
But the drop in "talent" with the loss of Allen and Bellamy meant that was actually more to work with in 2011.
You really have a hard time arguing based on your own synopsis of comparing 2012 and 2013. Clearly there was more "talent" in the backfield in 2012 with Ellington than in 2013 with McDowell (though I really loved Hot Rod);
yet the stats in 2012 were about the same as in 2013,
meaning the offense overcame the "drop" in running talent in other ways.
Still there was a "drop in talent" nonetheless.

future talent on the 2011 team, but our 2012 team fulfilled much more of that potential through experience and maturity making them a better overall offensive unit.
The original argument was that the 2014 defense + 2012 offense would be a better combo than the 2014 defense + 2011 offense. The criteria should be overall effectiveness, in which case the 2012 offense clearly wins. Nobody was debating which team had the biggest collection of future talent.
If future talent is all that mattered the 2001 Miami Hurricanes would probably be the best team in the history of football at ANY level of game, including NFL.
