Kick Return

Why was Etienne running back kickoff? I thought Ngata was doing a great job and always seemed one step away from breaking one. I may have just missed something, but would like some info if anyone knows!

Been wondering the same thing? Was Ngata out? Didn't notice him in the game at all.

According to the Box Score, Ngata was credited with 1 tackle. Didn't see Ladson Jr. anywhere.

I believe we tried to throw a slant to Ladson for a TD, but he was interfered with by #24 on the play.

Saw Ladson pick up a key block on a run by Lynn J.

My guess is because it was a rivalry game and those tend to have a couple more big hits in situations like that, he wanted to have someone who was pretty secure carrying the ball. Not saying that Ngata couldn't do it, but just less risk against a team with nothing to lose.

Not sure I like ETN running kickoffs back when the other team has “nothing to lose”.

I'm not a huge fan of it either, but I'll say he has been good this year to make sure he hasn't taken any direct hits unless he's the one delivering the blow. Plus I really think it was just a ball security thing. I do expect it to be different the rest of the way. May even see DK back there again.

I still think L J Dixon would be awesome on kickoff returns. When he gets up to speed, he can make a lot of people miss. Not sure about ball control though.

yeah I'm not questioning Etienne's ability back there. Just thought Ngata was doing a really good job.

I mostly remember him having issues fielding the KOs

I don't remember him being particularly good as a returner his FR year and i think the staff moved away from him later in the season and put someone else back there.

I was wondering about it too, and ETN nearly broke away on the opening kickoff. Maybe Dabo was seeing what ETN could do just for an extra spark come playoff time?

I like the idea of ETN as a return man, but we need to

be more selective about what kicks we actually return. Taking the fair catch or touch back and getting the ball on the 25 is often the best choice. ETN's first return was great and he was pretty close to breaking it for a TD, but he should've never returned that 2nd kick. I'm pretty sure it was coffin corner with a lot of air under it and we ended up pinned back around the 10.

I thought the 2nd return got to the 25, same as if he had called a fair catch with out getting hit.

It did. I got called back for a block in the back.

Dabo is getting ready for a playoff run. He said in postgame, "ETN is our most dynamic player in space." Trust the process guys.
