A concurrent sentence is a sentence of imprisonment that runs at the same time as another sentence for a different crime. The longest period of time is controlling, meaning that the total time behind bars is equal to the longest sentence. A judge may give a concurrent sentence as a form of compassion, plea bargaining, or because the crimes are interrelated. The opposite of a concurrent sentence is a consecutive sentence, where the sentences run one after the other.

Good information, but I understand the concept. I guess I am trying to voice my disagreement with concurrent sentences. I feel that if you do the crime, you should do the time. You shouldn't get off lightly because you did something worse than one of your other crimes - these are not children that need leniency from their parents.
If I kill someone on the next block over while running away from a liquor store that I robbed and I am convicted of both crimes, do I somehow not deserve to be punished for robbing the liquor store because I did something worse? I don't think the justice system is sending the right message, but I am trying to be open minded here.

The C J. Is stupid. Keep that fact in mind. The football player did not get special treatment. Concurrent sentences are standard, default practice in Ga. In my l.e. career, the ONLY consecutive sentences I can remember were on murder cases. They were olea deals to avoid the death penalty and judge wanted to ensure that life without parole would actually be life without parole.

IN Ga. all sentences are automatically concurrent unless judge specifically orders sentences to run consecutively.

Unfortunately, that bias may have had an impact on the judge's ruling. At least run those sentences consecutively and then tack on whatever comes out of his other assault, kidnapping, and DUI charges. No way this guy deserves to get out of prison until his thirties - shame on any football organization that gives him another shot!

it's garbage. Especially when it's applied to completely separate incidents involving multiple victims. Makes it seem like some of the victims go no justice. Know of a drunk driving incident where an off-duty copy killed two people. Got convicted for both killings but got to serve both sentences concurrently.

If your son made the mistake of driving while intoxicated which killed two people, it was two crimes (two homicides) but caused by one mistake. If he got 15 years for each, does he need to serve 15 years or 30 years to learn his lesson? The victim's parents might want 30 years, but you would likely support 15 years. The sentence serves two purposes: justice for the victims and also punishment for the crimes which should discourage the person doing the same thing again plus making others think twice before doing the same thing. Unfortunately given the recidivism stats, it seems to do neither.

Specifically, the trial I am referencing involves two rapes, which would certainly be considered separate crimes.
But in response to your scenario, if my son, whom I love very much, killed two people by DUI then I would continue to love him but would not expect the justice system to go easy on him for his crimes. Which is why it is important for parents to hammer home the importance of right and wrong with brutal honesty about what the consequences of their actions will be. The justice system should be concerned with protecting victims, not the parents of those found to be criminals.
I believe higher punishments are a great deterrent for future crimes, but as Ron White says, 'You can't fix stupid.'

And many times concurrent sentences are given (as opposed to giving two shorter consecutive sentences) in case the defendant is able to get one of the convictions overturned on appeal.

though he pleaded in these two cases and got off STUPIDLY light, he still has several other cases pending? Sound to me like a future career criminal will be back out on the street after a year, with a year's worth of formal training on how to be a more proficient criminal.
Butt, it's ok, he has future NFL potential. Bull$h!t.

Says here Class of '18. I would argue that he has already had at least 5 years of formal criminal education serving in the UGA Football Program under Bryant Gantt. FWIW I agree that he should be locked up into his thirties at a minimum. They gave him the minimum sentences to run concurrently. The victims and their families have every right to be appalled with that level of punishment.

I agree, but keep in mind it's Clarke county. Clarke county is a totally democrat controlled , liberal, leftist, cesspool. He would have gotten same sentence if he was Joe the rag man.
