Lest We Forget

Nov 27, 2022, 9:54 AM

With everyone getting all out of shape about the game yesterday, there’s always the debate about whether it’s right to be angry about losing and the placing of blame.

Here’s my take. This is now a business. Between coach’s salaries, NIL and IPTAY fundraising, we are right to expect our coaches to handle personnel performance issues like we are treated at our jobs. Nothing more and nothing less. If we don’t perform, either we are moved or replaced. This isn’t a loyalty issue, it is just business. You don’t pull his scholarship; you bench him. It also teaches the kid a lesson. You earn the right to play by your performance in the field.

And we do not “donate” to IPTAY, we pay for parking locations and tickets locations. If you don’t think so try to upgrade either and talk to the folks over there.

In reality we are annual stockholders and we pay our money to get CEO DABO to run the business and get us the best return on our investment.

All that said, if you perceive that your investment underperformed, then it’s your right to complain and even suggest changes. If you’re happy with the outcome, then you can say that too.

But the day that we said it’s all 20 something kids and you have to realize that are gone. We pay our coaches huge salaries to manage those 20 somethings and “donate” our money to get it done and win. And if you publish that your program is “Best Is The Standard”, you have to be an adult and realize that Clemson has not met that goal in all areas of the program this year and last year. Or if our coaches and Athletic Director believe that the product put on the field this year meets that standard, they should publicly say so.

So I say that as long as you don’t disparage spouses, children, pets or family; you can argue about who should be in or out of the game all day long.

As for me, I believe we need changes and honestly I think Dabo does too. What those changes could be would fill a multiverse and make a great movie. How those changes impact the team is something only Dabo knows. But he makes a ton of money to shoulder those decisions and the fallout from them. And that includes not making a change at all.

But we all have someone we report to in the end and Dabo has to deal with that too. And if we are now moving in a downward trajectory in the football world, Dabo has to deal with that. Perception in the recruiting world is probably his biggest concern now over who the the quarterback will be or will DJ transfer, stay or go. Our new AD will also probably have to weigh in on that as the Clemson Club circuit comes around next time and probably through texts, tweets and email (and if anyone still actually buys a stamp).

The main goal here is still to win, regardless of what anyone says. Everyone realizes that you can’t win them all, but you have to try with your best personnel on the field all the time. If Dabo believes he put the best personnel on the field yesterday, then he should say so and tell us WHY. Why is Cade not ready? Why is DJ the best option when he completes 25% of his passes? Why is Streeter the best option for OC? Give answers to all the questions and negative comments. He may believe that he doesn’t owe it to the PAYING fans but he does. If only for the perception factor.

Because I want to win ALL the games now. Dabo has set that standard. I know it’s unrealistic and I can live with a situation where I believe we gave our best effort and came up short.

But yesterday I don’t believe we put our best options on the field. If Dabo does then the perception gap will be a problem for lots of folks and that impacts recruiting and the potential to win going forward.

That’s not good for Clemson.

You are a customer not an investor. Big difference. Yiu are not asked to vote on the Board, you don’t get and dividends when we win other than the pleasure yiu get from the entertainment.

Don’t fool yourself. If you doing like the product, don’t buy it.

The best business treat their customers like shareholders.

If you lose enough of your customers, you go out of business, right? You might want to "listen" to their "suggestions" concerning the quality of the "product".
