I've reached a point in life I'm ashamed to admit

and I need help.
I am genuinely considering getting a storage unit. This defies my entire ethos, yet despite my square footage, I am completely out of space.
Items we plan to store for at least 1 year:
- 5, yes you read that correctly, 5 trunks of kids clothes (assuming #3 in the pipeline)
- crib (my wife got one from pottery barn), again plotting #3
- my old queen bed frame. it's an amish built canopy bed that we can no longer store
- miscellaneous baby stuff assuming #3
Cost to replace this shid is easily north of $6k, I'd wager, if we went for like items. I can get a 5 x 10 for ~$60 / month.
Am I officially a boomer now? Old me lived my life with whatever I could fit in my truck bed. Now I have quadruple the space of prior life and I'm completely out of room. My heart tells me to dump this shid, but it's a lot of crap at a decently high valuation clip with a clear pathway to get used in the upcoming months (assuming I can spread some baby seeds in dawghater2she).

Nothing about what's going on in the world is a reason not to have kids. Things are awesome. Never before has there been a better time to live than right now. And whatever problems we have are going to be solved by the kids we're bringing into the world now. I've never understood the whole, "I can't bring a kid into the world" mindset. It's the worst excuse of why not to have kids.

I think people scared to have kids right now are ####### soft. with the only exception being financial concerns / risks, b/c that I completely get, we just don't have to worry about it.

this hit faster or maybe more unexpected than originally planned.
we bought this crib b/c it converts to a full bed. well, now that we wanna go for #3, we've come to the conclusion that our girls will share a room. meaning we can't put dawghater2oldest in full bed so we got her a twin bed (which went swimmingly well last night)
so now we have an extra crib.
We can't toss crib b/c dawghater2youngest will still be in crib for at least another year, and we'll have dawghater2newbaby in a crib as well.
and while we're at it, we have jumpers, swings, clothes, burp cloths, bibs, allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll that baby shid we've accumulated over two kids that we're going to put in reserve while we go make another one.

Within the past month I finally sold our packNplay playyard, jumper, bassinet, etc. that we first had stored throughout the house, and then sat in our dining room for a few months before I finally got around to getting it listed.
Our kid is four now, and we had no plans on another. That stuff was like an infestation we couldn't shake.
The real trauma though is accepting what you're going to get back for it against what you paid.

to your point, at this point we have what we use and plan on keeping it for the third. I just don't have space to store all that baby #### anymore as they're rounding up into toddler-dom.
I'm fine (albeit at a higher than comfortable utilization %) now, the additional crib put us over the edge. I don't have anywhere to put it and I"m not throwing it out.
So...if I get a unit for the crib I might as well put all the other ish in there that's baby only and then re-evaluate come august/september when we pull the goalie.

Assuming wife isn't even preggers now, what is kid #2, 6 months? By the time baby #3 comes, kid #2 is old enough to sleep in a twin bed. You are overthing this WAY TOO MUCH.
If you are not currently using a crib and just saving it for kid #3, break it down and store it under kid #1's bed. Put that thing on risers and put more stuff under there.

i'm not buyin you saying you've only had one crib w/ kids spaced 2 years apart. ours are currently 16 months, and our oldest was in a crib until 30 months (last night). could we get more aggressive, to your point, sure. i liked keeping em in the crib as long as we could though...that's the genesis of my theory.
I don't have anywhere to put this crib.
idk how else to tell you guys to trust me bro but I don't. and I design storage systems for a living.

And also you must not have owned a storage unit because $47/month turns into $100/month QUICK (taxes, insurance, increases).
Also baby clothes don't store well, you're gonna pull out some stuff with nasty baked in milk stains on 'em.

I just make the money. She spends it. Was it "on sale" idk. I don't care.
Even still, your 975 doesn't pencil. If in fact the cost of the storage room surpasses the valuation of the crib and I go in the red, then the deal no longer pencils and we'll regroup.
I already stored these clothes once and most of them made it. Storage room or not, they're going to stay stored until either #3 boy pops out or we axe idea of #3 entirely and I take clothes to Goodwill.

Cause there will be some story about how some kid somewhere grew an extra head after using a crib with the paint they used on that sweet one you have now. Plus the clothes smell funny and there are new cute ones for sale all in front of your wife's face when she goes shopping for pampers.
And that stuff will stay in storage. Until your last kid moves out and you have invested $275,986 on storage fees.

I guess an intermodal container is out for you. When Mom died and we eventually sold house I purchased a container an built shelves in it. I didn't have room in the warehouse since I like to admire all my stuff occasionally (I am borderline packrat). I was thinking my son or nieces would take some of this stuff. That hasn't panned out yet. Since they all have houses now I need to push a little harder to unload stuff. Anyone into antiquish handmade solid wood furniture?

She's 86, still lives in the house I grew up in, and is srsly a borderline hoarder. Place is filled with unopened boxes of crap she had to have (and put herself into unmanageable debt to buy). But all that is another story.
She has a garage full of old "solid wood" furniture that was junk when it was new, and it's junk now, but its just 80 years old. When my grandmother died 20 years ago, my mother had to have that stuff before "one of the other relatives would have taken it". I wish she would have given it to them.
When my mother passes away, the guys at 1-800-GOT-JUNK have no idea what's coming their way. I can't imagine leaving that kind of mess for people after I die, but she doesn't seem to care about that part.

grandmother after my grandfather passed away, and remained in the house after she died until he died very unexpectedly. My dad and other uncle were tasked with cleaning out the house, and I came down to Columbia to lend them a hand. It turns out he was a hoarder, with his obsession being music CDs, books, and pr0n. I have never respected my dad as much as when he was on the floor in the exact spot they found my uncle dead, reaching under the bed to pull out bins of early 2000 era pr0n DVDs.

You're gonna have that ish in storage twice as long as you think you will. Chances are >70% that something, or all of it, will get ruined or broken in storage.
So add up how long you think you'll have it in storage, then multiply that monthly rate of one size bigger storage unit than you think you'll x2. Then add up the cost of replacing the most expensive thing in there. Gotta add in your time of putting there, getting it out, paying the bill, and then monetize that feeling of hating to pay for storage every month. Add all that up, compare it to the actual value of the junk you are saving, think it can't ever cost that much, and then just throw or give away all the ish you were going to store.
By the time you need that stuff, new stuff will be available that will better, faster, lighter and new. Save that monthly cost and just buy it all new again when, and if, you ever actually need it any of it.
Over the decades of moving, packing, unpacking etc., I've probably paid more to put stuff in storage than FBCoachSC® did for his house.
All I can tell you is don't do it.

I'd like to keep my bed for sentimental reasons, idk why, never felt attached to anything but here I am. I've made do storing my old bed, and could continue to do so. If I get a storage unit though, I'm taking it there to get it out of the way.
The kids' / baby stuff needs to get out of the house and we are most definitely going to try for #3.
I know for a fact I cannot replace all this baby ish for < cost of rental unit for 1 year.
that's the only thing that's justifying it.
I'm completely aligned with your position. This one defies everything I stand for.

Give some of it to people that may need it. The Amish built bed sounds pretty nice, but really, are you ever going to bring that thing out of storage and use it again. If you're having another kid, it may make sense to keep some of the clothes, crib, etc.
Just ask yourself, will I ever really use this again. If the answer is no, then get rid of it.

legit hoarders are just the upper limit of that law. I can count on one hand the people I know who live by the adage, "I haven't used it in a year, it's out of here".
We've been cleaning stuff out of this house off and on for 2 years, we're almost done. I posted about the silverplate serving pieces and crystal from my parents house that sat in a tote in the basement, unopened since 1998. Gone.

some stuff from HS, dead relatives, etc.
I have a 6 month policy, outside of tools (air compressors, shop vacs, paint, etc.) that I toss shid if I haven't touched it in 6 months.
If we end up not having #3, I'll toss all this #### no questions asked. I'm not going to toss it, knowing we're going to try and hae another one, knowing we will use all of this again since it's everything that's survived going from #1 to #2. It's not a lot of stuff, it's just big ####. swing, bouncers, cribs, etc. all of which (minus the crib) is doing fine in my house now as-is.
