Doesn’t matter what we think. The coaching staff has proven over the last two years they go with #1 66% of the time and especially in goal line situations. This, along with the appearance our backup O Linemen looked competent yesterday, is cause for concern as far as talent evaluation. Could be everybody just elevated their play.

Yep. Ship is a great for a change of pace. He’s not the ever down feature back. Plays hard but at his size durability will be a challenge and he lacks the vision Mafah has.

Two completely different styles who happen to play the same position.

Trying to say who is "better" will always be a purely subjective exercise. Mafah IS more of a power back, which, at least yesterday, accomplished more with our offensive line that was in play for that game. Butt, you can never say what Shipley might have done with that better blocking that was on display Saturday, either.
I do believe Mafah did more than enough to earn himself another start, even if Shipley returns from concussion protocol next week.

I disagree. The announcers at one time said that Mafah is more of the power back, which is true; then followed it up with, “he may not be the home run threat that Shipley is…”
I chuckled because Mafah now has 2 rushing TDs longer than Shipley’s longest rushing TD.
Shipley is quicker, no doubt. He doesn’t have as good of field vision as Mafah, or anticipation of lanes coming open. I’m not sure Ship would have done as well yesterday. He may have, but I think Mafah did absolutely fantastic, other than the late fumble.
Ship has had his major issues with fumbles this season as well, so as of right now…. I think Mafah gives us our best chance to win.

If you played much baseball which guy do you want on your team? The guy that hits an above average number of home runs but bats 0.250 or the guy that hits 0.400?
Ideally you want both, but if I only had one I would take the 400 hitter. We need both of these guys at probably 60:40 or even at 50:50. But I lean to the extra yard per carry that Mafah has as the 60% back.
Alas I am not the coach. Maybe they see something in Shipley to use him more. Maybe he works harder every day and earns it.
We'll see going forward won't we.

They are different types of backs. Mafah is better imo but I love having both.

It seems foolish to compare them. They both contribute mightily and are better when they're together.
That be said, Mafah ran like a mafahfucker yesterday.

Saturday was the first game mafah had to take the whole load. He also played his best game. I don’t what you said holds water. Obviously mafah doesn’t need Shipley. Mafah is the better back period.

I’m not going to talk crap about either of them. Mafah has been better at getting yards after contact though. I think we should run 1 series and rotate, that’s why you recruit 2 backs. If and when we see one cannot do their assignment then that may need to change

I don't recall a game that Shipley made me

feel as confident in him as Mafah did Saturday. Maybe the Wake game last year when he put his hand down and stretched for the TD?
Having said that, I fully realize my confidence in a player is completely irrelevant to playing time.
Also, it's difficult to gauge since they split time and neither would have a chance to rack up so many carries and yards...or get in a rhythm to do so.

May take Shipley several games to get through concussion protocol. Because it's clear how hard Mafah runs. Mafah should start and carry 25 times per game. He earned that Saturday.
