Maryland to B1G: I might be in the minority....

But I don't think it was a great thing for us to lose Maryland. Their program represented an entire state for our conference, and they'd been in the conference for 60 years. They increased our presence in DC, and gave us a presence in Baltimore.
They provided natural rivalries for UVA & VT, which our divisional alignment negated. They could've been a natural rivalry for WV, if we'd been smart enough to invite them into the conference.
Their basketball program has been dominant at times. And their football would've remained competitive if their AD, Yow, hadn't run the Fridge out of there. They were going through tough financial times that are largely self-inflicted. But there's a lot of potential with Maryland.
Getting Louisville is nice. But we lost a state, and only gained a metro area. The rest of Kentucky is deep blue.

The city of Louisville is almost as big as the state of Maryland isn't it?

Thanks I didn't know the numbers. Now tell me Clemson's population. Then you may see why I feel Louisville was a good replacement.

currently better than them in both football and basketball, but it is a big hit for what I see as the future ACC. First of all, it's a killing of tradition since they were a founding member and, along with Clemson, a driving force for the formation of the ACC. But more importantly, it's damaging to the image of the ACC - that being the "owners" of the east coast in major sports. We lost them and Rutgers in one week. We should have locked up West Virginia and Rutgers and been done with it (before WV went to the Big 12). Instead, we play games with Notre Dame.
It is very frustrating to think that the administration is so incompetent at Maryland that they ran that AD into the ground and HAD to leave the ACC for the promise of a big immediate check from the Big 10 (The Big 10 may make more money than the ACC but not that much more - The Big 10 is giving Maryland a ton of upfront money so they can stay afloat - they basically bought Maryland).
26,000 undergraduates and one of the biggest metro populations in the country and they couldn't sell tickets or raise funds. Pathetic.

"Good" for the ACC? No. But it's worse for Maryland

Do I think it's good that the ACC lost a charter member? Of course not. But I think the trade-off is much worse for Maryland.
Maryland was a 60-year member of the ACC. Their rivals are in the ACC and they are much closer to the schools in the ACC. In football, they could compete in the ACC from time to time and, in basketball, they had years where they were an elite team. In my opinion, the move stinks for their fans and for their athletes. They have nothing in common with any B1G schools. They are now an especially small fish in a huge pond in football and their basketball program just seems out of place-- they lose Duke and UNC as annual rivals.
Sure, Maryland fattened its bottom line, but at a huge cost. Their fans are going to regret this move, big time. This one was for their accountants and they sacrificed a lot. They're officially the Boston College of the B1G.

with as many stinkers as they have in that conference, it would be hard not to. You're right about them being the little fish, though, in terms of fan base.

more of an "ACC School" than Maryland will be a "B1G School." The ONLY school that they have any football history with the B1G is Penn St who they are 1-35-1 against.
Maryland has played a grand total of 12 games against the entire rest of the conference in over 100 years of football.

leave the ACC either. This will eventually cost them dearly as the realization settles in that they are the new island of misfit toys in a conference inherently mid-western in everything they think, do and touch. Delaney's forecast numbers are fantasy based on a model that has already undergone significant change since his network started. MD and Rutgers were pick-ups to keep Penn State in the fold with the theory that the two new markets would at least cover the extra revenue splits coming among the now 14 members. It will be fun to watch.

A recent poll in a Maryland newspaper showed an overwhelming majority of the alumni and fan base were opposed to the move to the Big10. The University of Maryland is now saturated with liberals who can't manage finances. This school will probably hire a female football coach for the sake of "diversity" when Edsal is fired.

It's not even close. We're not adding a program that fills a 90K stadium or anything. Nothing against Louisville. It's just a fact.

My point is that I wish Maryland hadn't left the conference.
Alot of people on various boards seem to act like losing them is no big deal, and we're better off without them. I disagree with that. Losing them is not the end of the ACC. But I liked it better with them.
