This is the new variant. It has the POTENTIAL to be like the original omicron. It is unlike the 1500+ other "omicron" variants. It is as antigenically different from the original omicron strain as omicron was from Wuhan. It could be less severe, more severe, spread more, of fizzle, but it IS worth monitoring, closely. In 10 days or so it has been spotted in the US, UK, Israel, Denmark, Japan, and South Africa. So there is community transmission. We will know if it's another omicron or something less in a few weeks.

Now, as for the article from The State, it is flat out wrong. First off, I was shocked they bothered naming a variant making people sick in SC because we don't sequence enough to tell. SC has sequenced exactly 26 samples in the past 60 days, and from that they picked a variant (?) that they say is impacting over 5 MILLION SC residents? That's laughable, to begin with. They picked a variant that went through SC 8-9 months ago and say it's suddenly decided to jump the cases again? Nope. Doesn't work that way. XBB.1.16 (from India) and XBB.1.9 are both higher than XBB.1.5 in the past 30 days of sequences here in SC. EG.5.1 is likely driving the increase in cases, but again, we don't sequence enough to know. We will know more in 60-90 days I guess. And BA.2.86 may jump everything, again we won't know. But as long as The State is on top of things, all should be fine.
Just checked. Latest wastewater samples from Switzerland show roughly 2% of samples are the new variant. So tack on Switzerland to the group. Again, need to monitor it.
Ok, add Thailand to the list. It has now shown up in wastewater from Thailand, the US (per CDC), and Switzerland, and in noses in SA, UK, US, JP, DEN, and Israel.

Don't forget to stop drinking water from the tap or bottled drinks or eat food from a restaurant or grocery store. We've been putting small doses of aborted fetus DNA in all of those things. Just stay inside wearing a tin foil hat unless you want us to succeed in turning you into a lizard person. Better safe than sorry.

I disagree. Probably nearly half the country is just waiting for government cover to put their masks back on so they can act superior to those who don't. Let's not forget the left only gave up masks, vaccine mandates, travel restrictions, firing anyone who didn't comply, etc because it was forced to by either the courts or by a shift in public opinion. They would still have us in the summer of 2020 if they had their way.
You may be able to get away with ignoring their stupid ###es if you are self employed or live in a red state but everyone else will do as they are told, or else, just like last time.
