out against UNCheat - assassin, UT - Assassin. Then, comes into the season, holding the ball too long, panicking, aiming throws. It is the same thing that happened to DJU. Maybe, they are coaching them to be risk averse and play to not make mistakes. Cade looked lost at the end of the game. He appears to be second guessing everything and not playing free. It really looks like he is struggling mentally.

Confidence definitely has taken a hit. I kind of expected that after the way the Miami game ended. He took responsibility for the mistake, but that’s something that’s tough to flush and not have an impact on the mental side. Hopefully, he can makes strides this week trying to refocus.

His confidence is definitely shaken, but we have to be honest and recognize that he’s put that on himself. On two critical plays (one against FSU and one against Miami), he went with his own decision and ended both games. Follow the play call, and the Tigers have a new set of downs or a TD. Even if they don’t, he doesn’t have to question himself because he followed the play call.

I truly would like to see him succeed and take the Tigers back to the top. Maturity and catching up with the speed of the college game will help him. And if they can get an offensive lineman and RB that can pick up the blitz, that should eliminate the sack, fumble, scoop, and scores.

Garrett Riley is his qb coach and has been on campus almost as long as Cade spent with Streeter. I’m pretty sure you’re a proponent of the big name, experienced hire. Care to explain why that hasn’t worked out?

By experienced hire, I’m assuming you are talking about the coach with 16 years of QB coaching experience, and not the current coach with 2 years of QB coaching experience,,,

I’m being critical of the hire - Garrett has coached more than two years and coached qbs more than two years - but my point is that Riley was the Broyles Award winning CFP Finalist OC. He was THE name for anyone looking for an OC. It is exactly the kind of hire Keowee wants and claims Dabo doesn’t make. In reality, Dabo’s best hires have been out of the box thinking that were not the big names. If success has hurt Dabo it’s that he doesn’t have to dig as deep as he used to both in recruiting and hiring.

Link to where I said that?

The point, as usually sails over your head, is that it was exactly the type of hire that Dabo has been relentless criticized for not making. How’s it working out for all the geniuses. More talent on this campus than when Chad Morris came to town and he was able to be an instant impact.

Is it the coaching?

Football Administration: 2011 Woody McCorvey 2023 Woody McCorvey
Defensive Tackles: 2011 Dan Brooks (AHC) 2023 Nick Eason
Tight Ends: 2011 Danny Pearman (AHC) 2023 Tyler Richardson
Special Teams: 2011 Special Teams (AHC) 2023 Mike Reed (AHC)
Defensive Coordinator: 2011 Kevin Steele 2023 Wes Goodwin
Linebackers: 2011 Kevin Steele. 2023 Wes Goodwin
Offensive Coordinator: 2011 Chad Morris. 2023 Garrett Riley
Quarterbacks: 2011 Chad Morris. 2023 Garrett Riley
Co-DC: 2011 Charlie Harbison 2023 Mickey Conn
Defensive Backs: 2011 Charlie Harbison 2023 multiple
Recruiting Coordinator 2011 Jeff Scott. 2023 Tyler Grisham
Wide Receivers: 2011 Jeff Scott. 2023 Tyler Grisham
Defensive Ends: 2011 Marion Hobby. 2023 Lemanski Hall
Offensive Line: 2011 Robbie Caldwell. 2023 Thomas Austin
Running Backs: 2011 Tony Elliott. 2023 CJ Spiller
Cornerbacks 2011 Charlie Harbison 2023 Mike Reed (AHC)
Safeties: 2011 Charlie Harbison 2023 Mickey Conn
Run Game Coordinator. 2011 None. 2023 Nick Eason
Pass Game Coordinator. 2011 None. 2023 Tyler Richardson

And about 20 extra support staff now then then? So what’s the glaring problem and what is different than in 2011. Throw out the defensive side because our defense right now is worlds better than it was in 2011. Is Tyler Grisham that much of a liability? If yes, how did the nation’s top OC prospect not see what half the rubes on TNet saw and save himself the trouble? Tony Elliott did not have much coaching before Clemson - Furman and SC State so from a hiring standpoint is a push with Spiller. We didn’t have the pass/run coordinator roles. That appears to be paying zero dividends. I’d argue we have over specialization yielding negative returns and too many cooks. But the idea that internals hires are implicitly the problem does not stand scrutiny. And the idea that going after the big name is actively proving to not work either.

BV was his best hire. There was nothing out-of-the box with that hire other than he pulled him from OU.

You're kidding right? Everyone on Tnet went ballistic about BV being hired, the argument was he was a Co-DC that gave 30+ points a game on a more stacked roster at the time. Most thought it was a bad hire and didn't make sense. I'd call Dabo seeing Venables energy and passion as a must have thinking outside the box.

Oct 30, 2023, 3:52 PM [ in reply to Re: duh..some people have been saying this for years*** ]

I agree it’s his best hire but the idea that it was wildly popular at the time, or was the big hire at the time, is revisionist.

Venables was the lone DC at Oklahoma for 8 years. They finished 11, 37, 19, 19, 59, 7, 33, and 32 in total defense those years. Clemson had finished with a better defense 5 of those 8 years. Oklahoma fans were unhappy and Bob Stoops had already demoted him to co-DC to make room for his brother. It was not viewed as a slam dunk hire and the reaction here was tepid at best:

A good general rule of thumb - any prevailing sentiment on Tigernet, that isn’t already fait accompli, is more likely than not wrong.

I know he has coached more than two years but I can only find where he has Coached quarterbacks for two years. Maybe I’m wrong I just don’t see it anywhere

One of those games we were up big early, the other we were down big early. Close game Cade has not been good in crunch time.
If we were down at the end of the game with DW or TL I was wondering what play was going to be the winning play. I had that same optimism with Tajh. When we are down a score late or in OT with this team, I am expecting a close loss until proven otherwise.

If you were playing behind that OLine you would panic too! The only OLine in the country that is worse is Colorado and there isn't a big gap there!

Re: Maybe a lot of Cade's issues come from the way he''s being coached. He came

I'm sure his confidence is shaky. But I just think we need to run more plays to his strength. He's not a 6'6" TL16 pocket passer. We need to run more roll outs to get him away from the pressure and use his speed more. Some pass/run options to run him to the outside not up the middle Also, we don't use Mafah enough to take the pressure off of Cade. At the end of the game, Mafah should be worn out from carrying the ball so much.

At the end of the game NC St DL was destroying him. He was getting hammered and trying to play with tempo. Tough ask of any qb

So the coaching somehow didn't ruin him in those two games, but ruined him this year.
