Most unbreakable records in sports?
Aug 12, 2020, 10:45 AM
|
|
I will limit myself to 3 team ones, and 3 individual ones. Teams first.
1) Boston Celtics: EIGHT straight NBA Championships, and 10 of 11.
I consider this one absurdedly untouchable. With today's free agency, teams would never stay together long enough to accomplish even half of this.
2) UCLA Men's Basketball: SEVEN straight National Championships, 10 of 12.
Same as #1. The further away from this we get in time, the more mythical it is.
3) Oklahoma Sooners Football: 47 straight wins.
Of the 3 I have listed, this is the one that could conceivably be broken in my lifetime. But, it would take an incredible effort to do it, even in these days of lengthened seasons.
Individuals:
1) Jack Nicklaus: 18 Major Championships.
As great as Tiger Woods was, he is still 3 short of even tieing this record. That last miracle that Jack pulled off at Augusta at age 46 in 1986 may ultimately be what keeps him on top of Tiger.
2) Nolan Ryan: Seven No Hitters.
Nolan Ryan owns several other records as well, but this one is ludicrous. The only active pitcher who even has THREE is Justin Verlander, and he is already on the downside of his career. (Marrying Kate Upton alone will probably sap his concentration enough that he will never get another no hitter. )
3) Consecutive career games played: (Two sports accounted for here) Cal Ripken and Brett Favre:
Ripken: 2632 games played. Favre: 321 consecutive games played (297 regular season).
Two things almost assure neither of these will ever be broken. One, just the desire to play that long must be coupled with the physical longevity. Two, the monies that athletes are making now all but assures that no one will maintain the desire to play that long.
There are other unbreakable records, but these were my favorites. What are yours?

A crying shame that no video record exists of that game.

Wilt certainly had no problem telling you he was the greatest center to ever play the game. At which point, Bill Russell would just wave his hands around and blind him with those 10 Championship rings.

Wilt had about 45 rebounds playing in a game against the Celtics and Bill Russell. Wilt never had the talent around him that Russell had until late in his career.

Jon Jones 17 wins in a row in the UFC. He still may get more if he fights again. GSP could tie him but I dont think he comes back to fight Khabib.

I do believe the NBA and college basketball title records are for sure the 2 that will never be touched. The playoffs and tournament make it nearly impossible. The way the NBA is now with players always switching teams makes it hard to have a great team for years in a row.

I agree 100%. That is why I put those two first. I was a huge college basketball fan in my early years, and I remember being PIZZED that nobody could beat UCLA during those years. Only David (Skywalker) Thompson and NC State was able to do it in 1974, and Wooden still got UCLA another one in 1975 before he was done.

UCLA had players that never started that were drafted into the NBA and played there.
The scholarship rules were very different then which let UCLA grab talent and keep it away from competitors. It also took much fewer games to win the NCAA tournament.
Between those two things, it will never be done again.

While that might never happen in mens hoops, it has happened in other sports.
Carolina's run in womens soccer pulled off the same trick. Winning 12 of 13 championships from 82-95, 16 of 20 from 82-2001... and never finished worse than the semi-finals (once) or runner-up (3). Heck more than 50% of all NCAA womens soccer titles are owned by UNC.

Rogers Hornsby hit .424 in the modern era (1924). He also had a season (1922) when he batted over .400 with 40 home runs.
Baseball historians often suggest various reasons why batting averages were so much higher then, but the factor most often ignored is the shape of the outfield. Early 20th century baseball stadiums were extremely deep in CF, so the whole field was diamond-shaped, not just the infield. Many old-time fields had the centerfield wall 440, 460 or even 485 feet from home plate; if the center fielder played shallow he risked giving up triples (Hornsby also had 17 triples that year) and inside-the-park homers; playing deep gave up easy singles.
Kind of like slow pitch softball.
Regardless of why, will never see .400 over a full season again. The science of pitching has progressed so far that anything close would be truly remarkable.

Current Streak: Clemson 5, OSU, 3, Jawja, 1 Oregon, 1 Alabama 0, (ranked 8th last year) I feel like Oklahoma got jilted as they would have a 5th straight top 5 finish but was bumped from 4th to 7th after their LSU playoff loss.
Saban while great and all, is fairly consistent for at least one non-top 5 finish every few years. 2013, he was 7th (Dabo was 8th)

at least a pint a day for his entire life. He drowned in a small pond at the age of 97. The only way anyone knew he had drowned was when the fish in the pond all started floating up to the surface, drunk. When they fished his body out, and tested the pond water, it was 80 Proof.

Pete Rose all time hits. 4256
You would have to hit 200 hits in a season for 21 or 22 seasons . Only 2 people in MLB baseball had 200 hits last season and they barely did it. That record will never be even close to touched.

Somebody beat me to the punch, but of all the unbreakable records, this has got to be the unbreakablest. Of course, it was a different game back at the turn of the 20th century, with one guy pretty much pitching the games, not like today with pitching rotations. Unless the nature of the game of baseball undergoes a sea change in the way it is played or scored, nobody breaks this record. Ever. Heck, to even START 511 games would require a career of 17+ years, assuming 30 starts a year.

Wayne Gretzky 2,857 career points. If you took away all of his goals (894) he'd still be in first with just his assist (1,963)
Tiger Woods- 142 Consecutive Cuts Made and 7 straight victories are both crazy as well
