Murphy to Duke thoughts

Malik Murphy to Duke seems to be a good first move for Manny D. Big kid (6’5) 230ish with a strong arm. Could be a major score for them if Mannys team looks anything like this years team. My question is this? Do athletes who transfer to historically academic schools such as this have to meet the same standards as all students? Been a long time since I went to college but even then my grades were never Duke or Vandy good. Any insight will help for my morning coffee talks at work.

I think it’s safe to assume that academic standards and parameters of acceptance vary from school to school. But I think most competitive football programs have multiple levels of academic rigor, usually including some majors that may be less rigorous.

And by the way, I have heard nothing that would indicate Malik Murphy would need to be part of this discussion. For all I know, he might be the smartest guy in D1 football.

I love to see a kid with no NFL potential transfer from lesser academic institution to a great academic institution. Effing smart kid.

The good news is a lot of recruits and parents are realizing that very few college athletes make substantial money in professional sports, and therefore getting a degree from a good school can provide a basis for more lifetime earnings than professional sports.

This is compared to decades ago when some SEC schools had a 6% graduation rate for football players. And yes, that’s correct at some SEC schools < 10% of football players ended up with a degree. Comical for the booster who likes touchdowns, but not so comical for the player who ends up pumping gas 20 years later.

So the folks that say college football is being ruined, I think you are correct in many ways, but in some distinctly different aspects, there is some good news.

Some people would say improving graduation rates are an indication of “progress”.

Also shows Duke has decent NIL money for football.

Give Duke credit, they lost a lot to the portal (thanks ND) ..and they are using the portal to replenish. At most schools, the portal door swings both ways.

You are confusing Duke academic standards of 1970...

.... with Duke academic standards today.

You are assuming that Duke does not have a set of courses designed to keep "uniquely admitted students" in good academic standing.

The Duke academic catalogue looks significantly different than it did 50-60 years ago.

Exactly.

Their sociology major is a basketball favorite. It used to be only 90 credit hours to graduate. Not sure if that is still true.

I agree. Academic rigor as we knew it is gone. The liberal universities value DEI as much as SAT scores, or more...

Duke has majors that let barely literate basketball players graduate with 80 credits in communications.

One of the things cutcliffe got Duke to do was drop the football academic requirements to the same as basketball which is essentially none.

Duke football only requires a 1000 SAT score from what I recall.
