My NIL Thoughts

Nothing wrong with free market, but the line differentiating the nature between pro and college football is rapidly deteriorating. What makes college football unique is players representing a school, a mascot, a color, and an alumni base. The free market nature of the transfer portal, used with the pay for play nature of NIL is taking the spirit out of college athletics. Allowing a player to sale jerseys, film food/product commercials, or otherwise profit off their image is perfectly fine. NIL has turned into a catch all name to otherwise purchase players on a one year rental. This has created a free market-free agent system where love of your university and its pageantry is no longer required. This is not far off from the NFL where the loyalty to a team extends only as far as the salary cap allows. I want to root for CLEMSON players, not players who have chosen soley to attend due to a monetary offer. This money first, love of school second mentality is what is frustrating many of us fans.

Sure...and I dont disagree with them earning money. However, coaches are working professionals. Players, to at least a certain degree are supposed to be student athletes. Put another way...amateurs. This distinction is important when talking about NFL vs College. If we're going to pay them as working professionals the loyalty to a university becomes an after thought to the loyalty to get paid. Essentially college football becomes even less about college, higher education becomes unnecessary, and a smaller professional league has been established. If we're going to pay them to play then why even bother with paying their tuition as well? If the pointnis to continuously shop for a school with the deeprst pockets then the value of the institution is meaningless anyways. Coaches are at least required to have degrees, Masters if im not mistaken at Clemson, to be qualified. What stipulations are required for the NIL money? Are we not just one step away from athletic contracts and not scholarships?

The use of the term "we" when talking about paying players is just wrong in the context that a school is the "we". Clemson, like many of the Power 2, 3, 4 or whatever it is now, are state (tax payer) supported universities and no one from those schools are writing checks to athletes and calling them employees.

What about the "we" as fans and Alumni? Are my donations only serving to "employee" a non-student athlete only as long as they are happy with the amount going into their bank account? What happens when deeper pocketed schools come calling? As a pround Alumni am I only cheering for players on a yearly basis? Is free agency the new norm? Am I going to have to settle for the NFL on both Saturdays and Sundays? If the school ponys up the money for the education, donors and sponsors for the NIL bucks, then who are the winners if the athlete transfers. The school? Their out the scholarship money. The fans? Nope, their star player just transferred for a million bucks. The athlete? Absolutely...but only as long as the system is sustainable and their careers fruitful. The system is broke and needs bumpers.

I think the value of a college education is a major factor. If 18-22 year olds can earn millions in as little as a couple years, whats to sustain them when the NFL doesnt come calling? Lots of broke NFL guys out there who mismanaged their funds. What skills have they learned if education was always on the back burner. Additionally, the free market is great for the Ohio States, Texas', USC's, and UGA's of the world but what about little ole Clemson? What about our school with an Alumni base a fraction of the size in a smaller state? Regulation, although a scary word, isnt all bad when implemented correctly. FSU and what happened with their roster should be a wakeup call for all of college football. We will be clamoring for some regulations governing NIL when our best players are being tampered with and poached by those with much deeper pockets.

Coaches have contracts, including buy outs if they jump ship
