I think they have thought about that and it's not really a secret.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The idea dates to at least 1942....

I'd sure like to know how water can be accelerated with only magnetism and no moving parts..... Sounds like there's some unobtanium involved.... :)

Seems like we're far too forthcoming unless there's some sort of tactical reason for it that we'll never be privy to.

Maybe we're trying to tie up the Russians and Chinese and cause them to waste their best brainpower on something that maybe can't be done. When Top Gun "Maverick" was released, I read that the Chinese went nuts trying to figure out if we really had that Mach 10 airplane in production. Maybe they'll fall for this, too.

I say maybe because DARPA has done some crazy things.

But like others here, I don't see why we would advertise it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Something like that would be the only reason I see to release it.***

The concept has been around for about 70 years and is nothing new. It was the basis of the Red October in Tom Clancy's The Hunt for Red October published about 1986. The technology to implement it where the limitations on its use has been.

The article in the OP is a Red October-themed April Fools joke. The PUMP program is real, though.

Yes, I read that book and had an interest in the caterpillar drive... Clive Cussler also wrote about it in Valhalla Rising. But those books were fiction.... <img border=">

The concept has indeed been around a while and has also been proven possible in very small scale, but it would seem to me that putting it to use in a full size submarine that could make any speed would be a tough job.

I retired in 2008 with 23 years of submarine duty. These new designs don’t always work. We had something similar on an Ohio class about 24 years ago. Well it pretty much welded the submarine to the pier for about 4 years. They had to remove it and go back to the original design. So I don’t give much credit to these reports. Granted that was years ago but when something works why change it. RMCS(SS)

It's a joke. The article is just a bunch of references to The Hunt for Red October. The Penobscot River in Maine is where they take the sub to hide from the Soviets in the movie.
