We have 4-5 star guys all over the place. We simply need for the ones we have to get healthy.
We are not short in numbers at OL or WR.
This is exactly the type of nonsense Dabo keeps addressing over and over again.

Using injuries as an excuse for the team's performance

this year is a cop out.
Early in the season, before all of these injuries, the starters nor their backups at those positions were playing well.

Funny thing is, earlier in the year we were healthier but not playing as well as we are now, even though there are more injuries now. Guess the experience has helped.

Maybe Dabo should stop recruiting top talent so there would be lower expectations. Then it would be harder to pin losses on coaching, and nobody would need to point to injuries as an excuse. He could just put together middling teams that struggle to score and never contend for the conference, and we could say he’s outperforming.

Maybe we should just cut the mbb program since we aren’t able to provide adequate funding. It’s what we do with other sports

Agree with JK here. At this point in the season, the most glaring weaknesses on the team are O-line and QB. Even without injuries, I just don't see any improvement in o-line play. There's just not enough talent among that group, and a couple injuries was just not the cause of the inferior play. Not being able to move the UCONN d-line off the ball was very troubling to watch and I really don't think it would have mattered if we had Bockhorst and Rayburn in there. Also, do you use the excuse of injuries at RB for the fact we can't run the ball? It has nothing to do with RB and everything to do with O-line. And as for QB, the play of DJU has been mediocre at best. Are you really going to blame injuries on the wideouts for his bad play. We still have plenty of talent at all skill positions. DJ just hasn't mastered footwork, accuracy, mechanics, and pocket presence. Sure, I wish the injuries would stop piling up every game, but to use as an excuse for poor play? There's been plenty of injuries on the defense this year, but they can play great.

All of this is true, except I no longer think it's fair to judge our O line "talent" based on their performance. Our O line coaching is abysmal and ineffective. Our best recruits never live up to their potential. The O line has always lagged behind in performance for Clemson while exceptional skill position play masked the worst of it. The UConn game is the best example seeing as we couldn't even match the YPC of their previous opponents who were mostly FCS teams, but almost every game tells the same story.
Caldwell might be the nicest guy in the world but it's insane that we haven't replaced him with someone proven from a smaller school. Sure hope Thomas Austin is the answer and not just another example of nepotism...

Great post. Injuries have been a problem but this team would still be where we are. It would be great to pick up 1-2 offensive linemen for next year. Maybe a WR who wants to block and win some jump ball battles. This team can win it all next year with a average O line.

While I agree that quarterback play has been mediocre, not sure that saying DJ just hasn't mastered footwork, accuracy, mechanics, and pocket presence is the reason. If memory serves correctly, he was heavily recruited by us and many others because he was (one of) the best high school qb prospects in the country. In other words...he was pretty darn good. Unfortunately, rather than just teaching him our offense and schemes, someone has tried to totally remake him into something he's not by trying to change his footwork, accuracy and mechanics. If it was good enough to get him here, it should have been good enough to let him play...with only minor tweaks here and there. Seems to me like he played much better in his two starts last year before Streeter and company had an off-season to "work on" his mechanics. Maybe we should have just let DJ be DJ.

Which Bama starting WR or OL came via the portal?
Nov 16, 2021, 4:05 PM

The OP said we had immediate needs at both WR an$ OL and that’s just not the case.
I pointed out that we have plenty of highly-rated players already on scholarship for both position groups.
Your response was actually a bit lazy wasn’t it?

Staggeringly ignorant to suggest we have enough depth at O Line and WR. Who is behind Tate at LG? Who is behind Putnam at RG?
Who plays the boundary with Williams hobbled, Ross, Ngata and Ladson out? Dacari Collins isn't ready, he had two really bad drops vs. U Conn. Who plays the slot of the other Collins goes down?
Just amazing---you either don't want to admit the numbers aren't there or you're related to someone on staff. Nobody can be that stupid.

So ... highly rated scholarship players who are on the team
Nov 18, 2021, 11:28 AM
|
|
don’t count in your depth calculations?
So, with Ngata, and Ross, and Ladson available last August, we should have gone to the portal for WRs? Who comes to Clemson to compete with that group?
So, we should have gone after random OL portal candidates with ample 4-star OL already on the team ... so many that a 4-star guy quits because he can’t get on the field?
The NUMBERS are absolutely there. We have PLENTY of OL and WR on scholarship.
What you want is a “Crystal Ball” that anticipates injuries, performance deficits, and malcontents.
Good luck with that.

I think the point everyone is missing is Dabo is not going to use the portal to try and find better players at a position that has multiple guys on the roster. What he will use the portal for is where we missed at during the season where guys quit and hit the portal unexpectedly in mid season. Rb might be one, we have lost some there but we don’t need a starter. Db is another he might go after. But don’t expect him to go after a position we have numbers at already. Just because the player in the portal might be better than what we have. He still has to be a culture fit and what Dabo is looking for. Not just a star player. We won’t be going after Spencer Rattler for example just because tnetters think Dj is not it at qb

We would only get an RB from the portal if we wiff this year or there isn't desirable freshman this season and we could bridge the gap to 2023 - depth but not a threat to push away the 5* freshman RBs.

Wow, the ignorance on display with that post is just amazing.
LG: We have Tate. Nobody else behind him.
C: We have two serviceable players in Rayburn and Trotter.
RG: We have Putnam and nobody else behind him.
To suggest that we have "enough" depth at O Line is staggeringly stupid.

You sound remarkably uninformed. Or just plain ignorant.
Here is a list of 4-star OL on the team
Bryn Tucker Marcus Tate Ryan Linthicum Tristan Leigh Deitrick Pennington Taquon Johnson John Williams Mitchell Mayes
... which one of these guys doesn’t count on the depth chart?
WHO should we have brought in via the portal that would project as better than these guys?

Try getting up to speed. The issue is about depth numbers
Nov 18, 2021, 12:14 PM
|
|
and the situation we faced last summer when portal decisions could have been made.
Stop trying to confuse the discussion.
“Results” at this point have nothing to do with the issue.
Last summer, we had plenty of 4-star OL on the team and guys in the portal projected no better than who we already had.

Immediate help means January! So you drop a freshman recruit for someone looking for a change. When Dabo finds the right candidates, he will pick them up! Otherwise it’s like getting a rebound spouse coming off a divorce. They all have some baggage.
Our problem now is at QB, and nobody a Clemson was crying out to pick up a portal QB in the off season! I’m sure if they see a high quality Player that can help us they will try to pick them up.
When Trevor came in, we had 6 QB’s on the roster. They all left and went on to start elsewhere. None would have started in front of Trevor and they all knew it.
There is not a gold mine out there, just kids looking for a unicorn…..

Change in mindset here but it was inevitable he would have to follow the changes in order to survive. No patience anymore anywhere whether it is firing coaches, early enrollment, early signing, early departure. I don't like any of it but it is what it is- if you can't beat them join them.

Tnet understood the transfer portal was a fait accompli for all programs including Clemson almost a year ago. Like it or not - players can’t funnel out and be replaced by competitive walk-ons.

Cra cra. The coaches, AD's, conference commissioners, whoever (we have a union with b1g and p12) need to get together and force the NCAA, or whoever to A. Either allow covid kids to not count, or B. If they do count, make them declare by May 2022 if they're going to use it. Problem solved. Everyone on the same page.

This is what you do when you are fearful you won't get as many high quality recruits as before, also known as hedging your bets. The portal provides fully developed players who can be impactful more quickly than an arriving freshman. Swinney is showing tactical flexibility, suggesting he is looking down the road and is somewhat less than hyper-enthusiastic about what lies ahead without portal transfusions.
