I want to be 100% clear that I still love me some Dabo.
He's be best Clemson Football coach I'll ever see in my lifetime.
A lot of these roster management issues, I believe, are more to do with the lawlessness, free-agency that has become college football now.
End of the day, he is about the right things which anyone can appreciate but in this climate if you want to stay on top, it seems more and more like you need to sell your soul which he's clearly not going to do.
I think he's against the portal out of pure loyalty to the ones he recruits even if that's not reciprocated which is the main problem.

I agree with you and am glad he is our coach. However, he has faults that are glaring at times. I love that we develop our players and we do not have a revolving door. Yet the talent we lose to the portal each year is replaced with another "diamond in the rough". I love my wife and wouldn't want another one, but she still is stubborn and set in her ways

That said, I agree that Dabo has the best culture. And the Colorado culture may kill college football that I know and love. But of college football player want to be paid, they may need to be paid to perform, and their contract may have a one year time frame. I really hope college football does not adapt thst culture

Well said PBT and that’s what those, that I’m not going to say disagree, but more understand Dabo’s thought process.
SC uses the portal and still suck. They lost a lot to the portal so did FSU. Fact is we don’t lose a lot to the portal even though there may be a few that some may wish would head on out.
Besides Colorado which bought 90 percent of their team it’s still the same blue bloods playing top notch football. Not like SC is all of a sudden going to win the SEC because they use the portal.

you can't necessarily look at strict W/L results and always attribute the W/L to the portal.
some teams, yes absolutely.
but using a hypothetical. You can't look at BAYLOR and say the center they got from the portal from a MAC team didn't help them b/c they LOST. The portal player they got from a MAC team most definitely was better than the previous option(s) but it doesn't mean they're going to go win 10 games b/c of it.
You brought up South Carolina. They're transfers MADE THEM BETTER last year and in certain positions they're better for it this year than maybe plugging in a freshman out of HS in instead. There is not a single QB on South Carolina's roster that's better than Rattler..........so that was an upgrade.........you get the point.
Clemson.........at this point is not completely void of talent throughout the roster, they are however void of talent at the WR position, it would have 1000% improved Clemson had they grabbed a better WR from the portal..............just ONE, although TWO would've been ideal.

So instead of recruiting a good QB for at least a 3 year stint we sign a QB Okie ran off for a 2 year stint. Is he better? What has he done? We gave them our game. He hasn’t done anything special. Is SC a better football team? Not even close.
FSU had a lot leave but were going to be good or better regardless in judging from how they finished last season.

that the kids he recruits, by and large, love it at Clemson, and don't want to leave and go elsewhere. That, coupled with his philosophy of "You are ours until graduation" is automatically going to mean less potential OPENINGS for anyone from the portal.
He's not going to take a scholarship away from an injured player, and he's not going to take a scholarship away from any player who works hard, goes to class, and keeps his nose clean. That is a fundamental difference between Dabo and several other major coaches. He is not going to "cull" players.
I don't see the day coming when Dabo changes that philosophy. Frankly, I think it more likely that he just walks away rather than do it. And, I, for one, am not ready to see that happen at Clemson. I may be old as an elephant, and my memory is just as good. I remember all too well how many years Clemson wallowed in mediocrity before he came along. And if any of you think Clemson is merely mediocre right now, even with this latest setback, you need to go see a shrink.

in the depth chart, or in the case of Dudley, they were FORCED to leave due to unseemly behavior.
In none of those cases was a portal player going to come in and be willing to take a slot at third on the depth chart at a position. And frankly, if they were, they wouldn't be better than what we had.
Another truth that many do not want to face: If I could inject some truth serum, I would be willing to bet that nearly ALL these high profile portal guys had deals made behind the scenes with their new school before their name ever HIT the portal. That is called tampering, and is supposed to be illegal, and is just about patently unprovable in this now NIL driven world. So, in reality, all these guys that you think would be just drooling to come to Clemson, Clemson never had a shot at.

it doesn't matter what position was lost..........it's math. TRUE depth is almost impossible to have nowadays b/c anything LESS than 2-deep is tough to keep anyway.
a schollie opens up when somebody transfers out...........REGARDLESS of position, keep it in your pocket until the Portal window opens. After analyzing the WEAKNESS or DEFICIENCIES of your team, in this instance it's BY FAR WR and shop the portal to bring in BETTER than what we have...........it's so simple that EVERY FBS SCHOOL except us and few military academies can do it.

that no TP player would come for a 3 deep LB position............I agree..........that's why I laid out why that was the wrong way of thinking about it.
you are switching what points you are trying to make.
1. Dabo does have his mind made up and will continue to dig this program into a deeper hole
2. if you believe #1 (that Dabo has made his mind up) then don't make a secondary hypothetical argument of a TP player not coming in for a backup spot to justify Dabo not using it.

I think the options are
(1)_try to find a plug-and-play at a position of need from the portal
(2) give it to a 3* player looking for a better D1 offer
(3) give it to a walk-on/grey shirt type
Options 2 and 3 we get worse in the near-term for sure and likely long-term too.

but there have been several instances regardless of position where we have had UNEXPECTED transfers OUT of the program...............instead of backfilling those schollies with a portal guy or two he either filled with a walk-on OR he sent the schollie to the next incoming freshman class......as a "panic offer" or a late offer project.
KEEP the schollie and wait until the portal opens up..............Heck, last I heard we PAY somebody to track the portal..........talk about a sweet gig at clemson.

exactly what i just said in another post.
Given the number or players we lose to the portal, I'm not sure how bringing in a player from the portal is taking a scholarship away from anyone. We give it to a walk on or some dart throw that we'd never have taken otherwise.
I don't know why this is so hard to understand.

This means a certain level of quiet coasting is allowed. A player with high potential like XT can go from 240 lbs to 280 lbs and sit out 3 years. XT and Mascoll can return for their 6th year with a guaranteed starting position over the better Peter Woods. There is a comfortable country club atmosphere at Clemson with players and coaches. The meals are 5-star feasts. The co-eds are beautiful. The tutors keep the players on honor roll and on track for an early degree. Everything is 1st class. And if a player is not going NFL, the lifestyle at Clemson is unmatched. Why leave? And for some some personality types, why work harder when you can do just enough, fully understanding Dabo's buttons, to get by and keep your position on the team?

Who on the coaching staff do we need to get rid of? Coaches coach and they look a lot better when they have great players. We have missed on WR no doubt and not sure a coach can fix what the player does not have.
Don't you think if our coaches were as bad as you believe we would not recruit at a high level and more players would be leaving.

While I agree that Dabo is a great football coach and am proud that he wants to do things the right way, using the transfer portal and encouraging players to take advantage of NIL don’t have to conflict with those standards.
There are plenty of high character young men in high school AND in the transfer portal that would be great fits at Clemson.
If Dabo isn’t willing to embrace these changes and utilize them to our advantage, he didn’t need to be coaching.

JK as long as you defend a Brownell a Dabo Swinney or any of the football coaches should not even come out of your mouth. You defend stupidity but harp on one the most successful coaches Clemson ever had.
Everyone knows you just like to stir the pot and nothing about what Dabo does will change because we don’t agree. The portal is not an answer. If we had recruited better receivers we would not even be discussing this. Portals are band aids for bad recruiting. FSU and SC will possibly have 5-10 portal after this season. Would be surprised if we had that in 2 years.

He does this while frequently fighting an uphill battle with the administration and fans.
I respect that grit and fight a ton.
He doesn’t have the luxuries Dabo has and has always had as our football coach.

Well, the Wake Forest coach came out and said that there is tampering going on. The tampering schools do it through third parties so the coaches stay clean. There's just no oversite anymore with the NCAA.

The portal thing is overblown. If you recruit better, that solves most of the problem. Yeah you can point to a Florida St or Colorado, but the teams at the very top (Alabama, Georgia, Ohio St.) aren't really dependent on the portal and the overwhelming majority of their successes is based on recruiting.
Keep in mind you still have to recruit against other schools even to get portal players. The portal is ok, but it's a Bandaid, not a permanent solution.

That’s it recruit better. Problem solved. We have swung and missed on a few. Give them less playing time and they could possibly move somewhere where they could start.
