Probably just thinking about WR overall and also the difference between 2022 and 2023 compared to 2020 and 2021.

Going by those numbers, no but either the evaluation

Jan 1, 2023, 9:33 PM

of that talent has gone down or the development has. Look at it this way, if D.J. had turned out to be what everyone thought he was going to be and just a couple of the receivers the same( like Ladson, That's, or Ross) we'd have been in the playoffs this year and maybe have another Natty.

Although we don’t know exactly why. Emotionally, the dude just wanted to go home. Our WRs were plagued by injuries over the past two years. Go back and check out some of that info, it’s surprising how many missed time.

Agree on the injuries but although it might have

been worse the last couple, or depth and talent at QB overcame it in the past. We lost Williams to serious injury and wasn't it either Rodgers or Higgins? Can't remember but even injuries side our WR room for the most part has wiffed compared to expectations.

I agree with that for sure. I just think some season everything goes right and others they do not. We were still a top 10 team that had a chance at the playoffs. Certainly the O needs to improve but I believe it will.

Leon Trotsky posted on here a couple days ago from 2018-2020 our recruiting classes have had 6 retire and 25 transfers. Not to mention how many still with program who have underachieved for 1 reason or another. Injury, lack of playing time. Etc

I think they’ve settled back on Streeter being the problem…

Jan 1, 2023, 9:34 PM

for now, because we out gained Tennessee in the Orange Bowl, and had more first downs and longer time of possession, with a freshman QB making his first start ever.

It’s a fan’s job to point this out to the head coach.

So if Streeter goes and we get a qb guru like Dilfer in we will win the Natty right??

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hard to nail that down…

Jan 2, 2023, 6:31 AM

This is a very fluid situation.

2019 class has hurt...alot.

Its important to have highly ranked classes...see BAMA and UGA and OSU as examples...but you gotta have good development and frankly luck with injuries.

Not many on this team would start on the 2018 team. So talented depth has suffered since 2018. 2019 class IMO was brutal...and that's not all on the coaches. Sure there were bad takes, but we were unfort with injuries.

I go to quite a few UF games too (grad and season tix holder there as well). The difference in size, speed and innovative offensive philosophies b/t the aforementioned schools above and CLEM and UF was on full display yesterday.

Jan 1, 2023, 9:42 PM

Not sure that's true. Our rbs are as good of a duo we have had since CJ and James Davis. Our wrs have lacked but they have been hurt. Ngata has tons of talent, Williams looks like a stud imo, and Randle could be a beast. We do need a wr similar to Nuk, Sammy, Mike, or Tee tho I agree that would be lovely.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don’t think the talent is falling off significantly

Jan 1, 2023, 9:43 PM

We just don’t have elite coordinators to coach them up anymore

Clemson used to be the place with the best coaches that turned top 10 recruiting classes into playoff teams

I love dabo, but he can’t do it all and he needs to get an OC that carry’s his weight

Jan 2, 2023, 8:06 AM [ in reply to Re: People are saying our talent is falling off ]

Talent level has dropped . We have lost our 3 best recruiters in the last few years and even going back to Dan Brooks. Their replacements have not produced. WR is glaring.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Talent hasn’t, but player development definitely has.

Jan 1, 2023, 9:45 PM

The only argument for us having less talent now is to say that recruiting rankings are incredibly inaccurate. That’s a reach considering the insane amount of money and time spent on recruiting today, both within football programs as well as the main recruiting services.

We have top 5-10 talent, but aren’t finishing in the top 10 the last couple of years. That’s a problem.

You can’t really blame a talent deficiency on losing players to the portal either, because even the biggest pumpers here tell us that our portal losses are backups who weren’t playing much if any.

Now it's not a talent falling off issue?

Yes, I said that, about our RECEIVERS.

1

Jan 2, 2023, 4:10 PM

It’s pretty clear that the caliber of receiver we have now is not what it used to be.

But I don’t think our OVERALL TALENT has fallen off.

Please try to keep up.

With regard to receivers, you pointed the following out in that thread you linked:

“We signed revivers ranked nationally at…

2022: #10, #11, #149
2021: #4, #22, #42
2020: #20, #93
2019: #5, #23, #62
2018: #11
2017: #2, #12
2016: #16, #67, #81
2015: #2, #44, #93”

I believe the receivers we’ve brought in have been highly regarded. They clearly have potential as a group, even if we don’t have that one guy like Sammy or Nuk or Mike Williams. So why aren’t they playing better? Coaching. That’s pretty obvious at this point.

We have finished in the top 10 tho. What are you talking about?? We finished around where our rankings are. We won national champion ships with great qbs. We had a qb turn out to not be so great so we had 2 years where we finished where our recruiting rankings are. We overachieved with DW and TL. Now we finish in the top 10 and because of our previous years winning its this crazy horrible thing.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We were competing with roughly 6 to 7 teams..

Jan 2, 2023, 5:14 AM

in a given year for the upper level bluechips(ave☆perplayer was near the top); in the last 3 or 4 periods three schools have secured more and more of this top teir talent and pulled further away from the rest of the pack. Additionally we've also began to slip back a couple of spots in the group that remains(ND,LSU,Tex,OU,A&M,etc)-

Re: People are saying our talent is falling off

Jan 2, 2023, 6:15 AM

Its really not falling off. Replacing both coordinators in one offseason was rough. Switching from an attack defense to a bend but don't break has growing pains.

The offense wr recruiting changed from getting a blend of guys to going after only big jump ball guys. Really need a few guys to bring speed to the table and some smooth route runners(maybe Williams and Stellato can fill those spots?)

Our hit rate on 4 and 5 star guys from 2012 to 2017 was unmatched (and unsustainable) and masked over continuously undersigning for a lot of classes. Our luck or talent development ran out…

Talent has fallen off in certain areas. You may get elite recruits at certain positions that boost the overall ranking, but if you miss on guys at critical positions, it hurts the bottom line if productivity.
