Pig's Retirement Countdown... 7 Days Left

Jarvis Telephone Systems, Sales Rep/Technician, Charleston, SC, 1985-1986

My 1st job after graduating from Clemson was with Jarvis as a Technical Sales Rep and Service Technician. I sold and serviced electronic key telephone systems. My wife and I didn’t really like Charleston and left after only 6 months. Unfortunately we left a little too late. 1 week before my last day at Jarvis, my wife was in a car accident. She was not hurt badly, but her car was totaled, so I had to drive a company van for the last week of work. We moved to Lexington, SC for a new start.

I didn't point you because of the accident; I did because

I imagine the excitement over the next seven days will probably be more than any average person can bear! LOL.....,.

Congratulations, as this day of reckoning nears, for the enormity will hit the very first morning you arise and say, "Dammmmmmmmmm, I don't have to go to work today!"

I enjoy tracking your countdown. Mine has a higher number than yours but is also this year. I enjoy sensing the anticipation I will have like you when I’m down to single digits!

Just curious. Where did you live in Charleston and what didn’t you like about it?

We lived in West Ashley at the Georgetown apartments on Orange Grove Road on the Ashley River.
Neither of us liked our jobs very much... that was probably the biggest problem. We always felt like outsiders, because we weren't from the area. I also think we wanted to get back to the Lexington area around more Tiger fans. Too many Gamecocks in the Charleston area.
I also go tired of reading the "No" News and Courier newspaper.

Yea. Growing up down there we were taught anyone from north of Columbia was likely a Yankee so you were probably on the edge… 😂😂.

We lived in Florence for about a year and a half about that same time and there were a whole lot of coot fans in that area.

While working at the CNSYD, we used to call that rag the Newsless Courier. Back then, their Sports Editor was a Ooglie.

Know I'm gittin up in years! Enjoy your second career! :)

Charleston was never an especially welcoming place to 'outsiders' back then...and definitely back in the 60s when I moved there. Still, I miss the old Charleston accent...very seldom hear it anymore. Our next door neighbor was a Charleston County police sergeant and he had that accent spot on. He used to chat to this then 11 year-old all the time. He died suddenly of a massive heart attach at 53! That tore me up! He and his wife made us feel welcomed to the Low Country.

So true about Charleston. They still refer to families that have "only" lived in

the area for a hundred years as "newcomers". The only thing worse is Summerville, where I also lived for a couple years back in the early 80's. Summervillians, for some unknown reason, think they can actually look down THEIR noses at even old Charlestonians.
