Good point, I gave Harper the nod because Bryant’s success was largely the result of having one of the top defenses in the country.

I would definitely switch Bryant for Harper, and probably Parker for Harper too. Don't care what anyone said, Parker was a gamer and a baller. That kid had balls, and was clutch when he needed to be.

Also DW4 and TL16 is a toss up. I'd probably go slightly DW4, because he was so clutch, and could create with his feet. I think he could also do slightly more, with less.

I can’t put Stoudt last. Seems like a lot of fans have an unnatural distaste for him but his completion percentages were good (helped by some stud receivers I know) and he finished up in a great game. Much better than that whimper by KB.

TL16 DW4 Tajh KB2 Whitehurst - See below Cullen Harper Cole Stoudt Will Proctor Kyle Parker
Keep in mind his 2004 campaign which was worse than DJ previous season - but I think both are an instance of other offensive troubles. I mean CW was also a Heisman hopeful that preseason but it was a rough season. Does not mean that a QB is bad.
Not enough information - DJ. I mean other than Tajh DW4 and TL16 - everyone else has a black-mark season.

Hmm. Nothing against any of those guys, but Parker was definitely more talented and experienced that Proctor and Stoudt. Maybe better than Harper if he had had more experienced talent around him.

Harper was the better athlete and potential. But being a QB, his second season was statically the same as DJ's this season and little different that Cole. He in protection mode after the Auburn hit/game and regressed in 2010.
Cole Stould stats were marginally better than Parkers and Will's were slightly better than both.
I agree, maybe if the 2010's team was better it could have been better for Kyle but his play was not great that season either.

Parker you meant as better athlete / potential. I agree with that. He would have been a better QB too imo if he wasn't splitting sports. I'd put him under Harper on your list, and mainly because Harper had a better squad around him. The 2010 team was devoid of many playmakers, and the play calling was headscratching terrible at times. I agree too he wasn't the same after he took that AU targeting in the back. That hit was brutal.

Yep, I swapped the names typing. Parker is the better athlete/potential. Harper was the better all-around QB even if he had a cap.
If anything, he had a lot more "fan confidence" after the Miami game. You never felt like he was the limit if things were not going bad so I understand why a lot of folks would slot him higher. Team talent aside, Parker had his accuracy issues and was more error prone. Some of the sling-it swagger cut both ways. Harper was both more accurate and made mostly better decisions. He could not have the same transcendent game like Parker and Miami. Parker played better in big game but he was either light-out on fire or if you remember the TCU or Maryland - SC or GT game he could be ice cold I try to pull more from his 2009 season there but do you take the Freshman better stats or the injury season. Harper was just more consistent even if he had a lower potential ceiling.

Parker also had broken ribs that entire season, Parker is too 5 on this list if it’s based of being healthy, potential and best moments. We were better than that Auburn team that won the natty, as soon as Parker got hurt it ended our season.

Everything about this post is wrong. First, How do you figure? You can't compare raw stats in different decades. College football has followed the NFL's footsteps in making it impossible to play defense since Whitehurst's time. I mean, in 2004, the best P5 QB was Jason White with 35 touchdowns. There are 10 QBs with more TDs this year. But lets look at stats (compared to other QBs):
Whitehurst: #94 in passer rating, #88 in passing accuracy, #62 in passing yards, #92 in ypa, #90 in passing touchdowns, 7th most picks.
Uiagalelei: #104 in passer rating (second lowest in the country), #98 passer accuracy, #77 in passing yards, #102 in ypa, #98 in passing touchdowns, 20th most picks.
DJ's season was worse than Charlie's 2004 season statistically. If you compare the talent gap, it really becomes insane. DJ had 3 NFL caliber running backs, along with 7 blue chip receivers. Charlie Whitehurst was handing the ball off to Reggie Merriweather and throwing to Airese Currie and Kelvin Grant. Literally every skill player on this squad is more talented than them.
Saying DJ's season is the result of other offensive troubles is laughable. I don't think he was the only problem by any means, I think that largely falls on Elliott and Streeter. But you don't become historically bad if you're playing well. And Charlie was a Heisman hopeful the same way every player is. He could have theoretically won it. But no one outside of Clemson fans considered him a candidate.
That said:
DW4 TL16 Tajh Cullen Harper Charlie Whitehurst KB Kyle Parker Will Proctor Cole Stoudt DJ

It seems insane that you're ranking DJ based on his high school ranking. It's too late for that. We've seen him play now. He just completed the worst season statistically for Clemson in history. Sure, he could potentially improve (although I don't think that's likely given our struggles at coaching that position and and Klubnik coming in). But based on play, he is last. Plain and simple. It's not even debatable.

Iah TL is probably the best prototypical prospect and maybe the best pure passer…but in my book it’s not even close with DW … DW is #1 … I never had any concern at all if we would win if we needed the last score and the ball was in DW’s hands…it was a given…even vs Bama for the Natty I looked at my friends at the game Amd told them…don’t worry about whether we are gonna win…we are…just sit back and enjoy these last minutes and this win!!!
I never had that feeling with Trevor…he is obviously great but just never had the same feeling with him…
DW would have beaten Bama in the semis the year we lost (TL probably also)…he would have also beaten Burrow and LSU and Fields and OSU…
It’s not a knock on TL but DW just had that edge…that Jordanesque will to win on the biggest stage…he had that IT!!!

I agree! I would have liked our chances against LSU and Ohio State with DW4......if you blitz him 3 time he was going to make you pay on 2 of them with his pocket movement and strength.

Jan 6, 2022, 2:37 PM

the same for Tajh and CW for 3rd. Tajh won a lot more games, but his only knock is 0-3 vs. capons. CWs biggest plus is 4-0 vs. capons. KB probably at 5 just due to lack of games. Only lost 2 in 2017, one where he was hurt. Proctor/Harper/Parker toss-up at 6-8. Hopefully DJ can pass those 3, but probably sits at 9 right now. Stoudt is last. He has one good game after a month to get ready. DJ had two good ones already, albeit both in 2020.

It is really hard to judge DJ. I know DJ has issues of his own but this years OL was worse than the one that nearly got KB killed in the playoff game against Bama. He didn't get much help from his receivers either. Also, I don't believe that the playcalling early in the year was effective given his issues and the others.
I can't really argue with most of the above lists though.........

As others have stated, it’s hard to rank DJ right now because he’s still writing his story. I think DJ will pass Parker next year with a solid year, and could certainly pass Bryant as well.

Jan 6, 2022, 3:12 PM

but quite poor in 2008 (13 TDs and 14 Ints).
The crazy thing is that in 2008 (his poor season), he was still 2nd in the ACC in Pass Efficiency Rating with his <1 TD/INT ratio. He was behind only Russell Wilson.
That shows you how just how much football has changed in the past 15 years (though 2021 DJ still had an atrocious Pass Efficiency Rating even by 2008 standards).

Watson did more with less support than Lawrence.
If Charlie was throwing to the guys Tajh was??? Dude had TE's as tackles. Similar logic as 4 > 16.
As passers I would but Harper slightly above Bryant but he had far less athletic ability.
with a healthy squad and better leadership i could see DJ rising to at least 5th this season.

your rankings are within discussion range. Although, I will say, I cut Parker some slack, I don't think he was ever truly the same after that Auburn back spear. I give him points just for grit to go out and compete while hurt.

How in the world can you put Stoudt ahead of Harper? DW won all the games in 2014. Stoudt was probably like 3-3 and threw a pick 6 every 5 seconds with tons of weapons and a great D. Cullen Harper was outstanding in 2007.

DW4 was for sure the top. Trevor the second. Boyd/Whitehurst are a toss up. The rest can go in almost any order depending on what you are looking for. I think if Parker didn't get crushed he would be high on this list, like others said he was never the same after the hit. Procter always was worried about his hair/appearance. All the rest had their moments. DJ5 is hard to read, looked great his freshman year and terrible his soph year. Lets see if he plays better next year or if Cabe takes over. I expect Cabe to be another DW4

I’m not sure how one can say DJ has the potential to do it. He’s the slowest on that list. If he and Whitehurst ran a televised 40 yard dash against one another, you could play a commercial and still catch the ending. Whitehurst got his brains beat in, and kept getting up. He probably had the worst O-lines of the last 20 years.
DJ struggles with field awareness. Combine that with no speed, the guy is Logan Thomas (who is really tall) only 20 pounds heavier. He just in no way fits the Clemson offense that has been ran for the last 10 years.

All you have to do is watch (a lighter) DJ's fundamentals play in HS and last season to clearly see he has the potential.
He lost all confidence and his fundamentals and mechanics completely changed this year.
You're basing your judgment on how he played this year. I'm basing my judgment on exhibited ability 3 years ago in HS and his tremendous play last year.
