Relying on Portal QBs...

So we are now seeing a trend among several programs relying on getting their starting QBs from the portal:

- ND snagged Sam Hartman last year and is set to get Riley Leonard this year
- Oregon snagged Bo Nix two years ago and is set to get Gabriel Dillon this year
- Kentucky grabbed Devin Leary last year and is set to grab Brock Vandagriff this year
- Louisville grabbed Jack Plumber last year and has gotten the commitment of Tyler Shough this year

There's some level of smoke around FSU going after DJ Uiagalelei so they may be looking to join this trend as well...

I have serious doubts that relying on the portal for starting QB's, particularly those that only have 1 year of eligibility remaining, is a sustainable practice. I can't imagine that programs with a reputation for grabbing starting portal QBs will excel in recruiting top quality QBs from HS. What kid would want to go to a school that replaces their no-longer eligible starting QB with and portal QB every year/other year?? What does that say about that schools willingness and ability to develop QBs?? Seems to me this QB portal practice will eventually bite these schools in the buttocks. At some point these schools are going to miss out on the portal QB lottery or there just won't be enough of those quality starting QBs in the portal to satisfy the demand - then what??

For better or worse, I'm glad Clemson has avoided the temptation to go after a new starting QB from the Portal every year/other year. I don't think it is good for the long term health of the program but I guess we shall see...

Thoughts??

Agreed. I don't know anything about FSUs roster, but whatever QBs they have left have got to feel uneasy or betrayed. Definitely agree that it would be extremely difficult to maintain success like that. So after this season if there's not a star QB in the portal, what does ND do? Or if they whiff on him?

this is a clear statement that they will buy a player if you don't play well after one year of starting

I think the other side of the coin is sometimes things just don't go the way you thought they would. Sometimes you get a "can't miss" guy who actually misses, and doesn't really fit the bill for your team. Your talent evaluation in this case just didn't pan out. In other cases, you don't get the guy you wanted, like our case in the last cycle. Sometimes you lose your guy to the portal and need to replace him and don't feel like your backups are the best fits or simply aren't ready and you need more of a "ready now" player.

One might argue as soon as we missed in the '24 cycle in grabbing a QB, we should have gone to the portal for someone with some experience. We had to resort to red-shirting V and now we have a depth problem from an experience perspective in our QB room. If Cade goes down, we will have to throw a guy out there with little to no real college snaps.

I certainly would still prioritize HS QB recruits, and developing them as the priority, rather than relying on the portal, but I also would not rule out the portal in the right situations to my own detriment.

All this turns out to be true in those circumstances which you have detailed, but, for sake of argument with the OP, the ‘excuse’ for bringing in a portal QB who starts immediately is a known disincentive for the typical HS recruit.

Here is an example of a team losing out while gambling on a portal QB to leap frog a ‘being-patient-in-the-depth-chart’ HS QB:

NC State had QB Devin Leary transfer to KY before start of 2023 season. During Leary’s 2022 season, NC State had burned the RS of then-true-FR M.J.Morris to prepare him for either a key backup role or (as he had been led to expect) a starting role if Leary went down.

Leary departs after end of 2022 season; NC State brings in portal QB Brennan Armstrong (a good QB) and promises the starting QB job to Armstrong. M.J.Morris is placated by being told that he will play only 4 games so that his RS season will be preserved. Armstrong gets injured (not for the entire season) midway into 2023 season; Morris is inserted as starting QB and has some luck (including beating us in an underwhelming performance). NC State says that they want to burn Morris’ 2023 RS. Morris says no. NC State then brings back Armstrong to finish the season.

M.J.Morris hits the portal as soon as regular season is finished.

(*). What do you think opposing schools will say on the recruiting trail about how N.C. State treats their HS QB’s?

THIS is how use of the portal to bring in one year starting QB’s, a la N.Dame, can turn into an addiction. N.Dame’s reputation for treating their HS recruit QB’s fairly goes out the window. Assuming that N.Dame gets R.Leonard, they will be addicted to portal QB’s as long as Marcus Freeman remains as HC.

I hope DJ goes to FSU! These programs that depend on portal QB’s are a bad decision away from being average.

Not sure it’s avoidable giving the difficulty of keeping a backup QB out of the portal

In 3 years it will not be a problem. Players will be on contract just like the NFL. The issue will be how long is the contract period the players must/will sign.

I heard a discussion similar to this on a radio sports show. The talking heads were saying recruiting a QB is out for some schools and they are content to bid for the best QB available. The future backups for them will be grad transfers and 3 star QBs on down.

Mike Norvell agrees with you.

Here was the QB room in August:
Jordan Travis, clear #1.
AJ Duffy, redshirt sophomore who was expected to be #2 and ready to start next year.
Tate Rodemaker, redshirt Jr who was considered a very capable back-up and possibly compete with Duffy for #2.
Brock Glenn, highly recruited true freshman who was considered to be a redshirt this year and possibly compete for starting job next year, but probably be starter in two years.

Situation:
Duffy never lived up to expectations, passed by Rodemaker in August practices and was battling with Glenn for #3.
Glenn got injured in practice in September and missed about 4 weeks of practice, but still passed Duffy on depth chart.
Rodemaker looked mediocre against Florida and then couldn't play against Louisville, so he's a question mark.
Duffy entered portal.

So, Norvell goes into Spring with no one having shown the clear ability to be ready to be QB1 next Fall. He feels good about 2025 with a redshirt freshman and a freshman who seem to have the potential to be excellent QBs.

But, if he wants to compete for the ACC championship in 2024 he either has to count on one of the three QBs being able to improve drastically between now and August or go get a 1 and doner.
