Rudderless, Leaderless, Sloppy, Unmotivated

10

Oct 22, 2023, 11:10 AM

Brent Venables' departure is a big factor. BV provided Clemson with a machismo, swagger and purposeful leadership that the top players emulated.

Secondly, the current players and coaches just have less ability and hunger than the 2018 squad -- the best ever at Clemson. The so-called senior leaders (Tyler Davis, Ruke Orhorhoro, Xavier Thomas, Justin Mascoll, Will Putnam and stable of OL busts) are back at Clemson because the NFL is not that excited about them, and Clemson is a great place to be -- all you can eat steak and lobster, beautiful coeds, tutors to do the heavy lifting on academics, NIL benefits, and light practice responsibilities compared to the old school (Ford) days. Juniors Beaux Collins, Will Shipley, and Phil Mafah along with the the seniors are fine young men but not successful team leaders.

The Tigers were rarely out of a game with the NFL-level QB talents of Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence, and WRU, and the Power Rangers. The rest of the good but not great players, and the entire program, followed in their draft.

Finally, most of the current coaching staff & players, whatever their pedigree, arrived after Dabo, Brent, and supporting cast had already built it. They inherited the finest facilities, perks, salaries, lakefront homes, playing & coaching conditions, and silver spoons of their predecessors without earning them. Less talent with more perks and less motivation. The peer-to-peer leadership and culture that slwcu79® references in his post today has no doubt taken a hit.

When BV left, the "soul" of the staff went with him...

BV didn't coach offense. While our defense has been less than stellar, our main issues is an anemic offense.

Missed his point. BV was the heart and soul of this Clemson team. His presence impacted not only the offense, but every coach, assistant coach, and analyst in the program. Nobody, regardless of who they were or what they did could challenge that man or be near him and slack off.

You do realize that BV was on the sidelines in 2021 when the offense was anemic as well.

No BV did not coach the Offense

But BV influenced them every day at practice and on game days with relentless & toughness that influenced Dabo, the Chad, Elliott and Scott. The other coaches & the players either brought it every day or had their a$$e$ handed to them.

Then why was the offense anemic in 2021 when he was still on the sidelines?

Yes BV was there in 2021 when the defense was saving games like the ones this year against Miami and Florida State.

Our pathetic 2021 offense would get a few points lead and would then have to rely on the defense to stop final drives at GT (14-8), Boston College (19-13), Syracuse (17-14) and Louisville (30-24). That defense also held Georgia (2021 National Champion) to a field goal while our offense gave Georgia its only touchdown.

Yes the offense still looked like crap in 2021 but it was saved from a season like this by superior coaching on defense. The offense still sucks but now the defense can't be counted on for the same kind of game-saving defensive stands we had with Brent.

It effects the offense too.

Brent seemed to not just make good players but also good leaders.

Christian Wilkins played defense and a few times as a gimmick played offense. But he effected the offense through his leadership. He was a **** of a leader. Same with Boleware. Same with Skalski. There leadership not only motivated defensive players but the whole team.

Don’t forget BV’s impact on the whole team on the practice field.

It didn't seem to help the offense in 2021 when he was still here.

Was BV not on the sideline when the offense sucked in 2021? Please explain.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

but, but, Dabo was calling the plays and wouldn't let BV help...

don't you know the narrative?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you've lost all perspective - you need to rewatch the game

Oct 22, 2023, 12:49 PM

we led by 10 points with 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter, AND that was after Shipley coughed th ball up again going into the End Zone in the 1st half.

If anything, we were again the much better team in a hard fought game, that simply just made too many mistakes to overcome.

Sloppy, I'll give you this one - lots of mistakes by lots of people.

Rudderless; that look comes from having an inconsistency at QB, nothing more is required.

Leaderless; couldn't be more out of line if you tried. There are, however, not as many playmakers on this team as there were in earlier incarnations, so.... not as many "leaders".

Unmotivated; I think the Team is plenty motivated, but they just don't know how to win. Not yet at least.

BIIGEST ISSUE IS OL.....BY FAR....

Cade needs to improve, but he's the least of our concerns on the O. Look at the WR and RB rooms too. Very very average

I agree with most of what you said. The biggest problem is the O line. The last few years Clemson has signed a bunch of 4 star O lineman and they seem to be worse than the 3 stars they used to sign. It makes you wonder if the strength and conditioning is where it should be. Think about all of the injuries the last few years. How much of that is due to the strength and conditioning or lack of?

Another thing is contentment by the entire staff. Everyone is comfortable and happy. No matter what you do for a career contentment will get you sometimes. People get comfortable they get lazy.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Neither players or coaches even know the plays they are calling.***
