How much are they signing him for? I would think

Dec 27, 2022, 1:40 PM

he would be one of the pricier free agents in this period.

So this is how it’s done:

Dec 27, 2022, 1:52 PM

Prospective school reaches out to athlete through back channels to determine level of mutual interest. Keep in mind that this is tampering bc the player is still outside the portal.

However, schools like ND, OSU, Bama, UGA, Michigan and others at this level INCLUDING Clemson can make it happen.

If the right player doesn’t have mutual interest then it is never spoken out loud.

Lesser players in the portal kind of have their fingers crossed.

It's like coaching hires.

Dec 27, 2022, 2:35 PM

School hires a headhunter and asks him to find out who might be interested if an opening came up. Headhunter calls agents and asks if they have any clients that might be interested. Conversations take place between headhunter and agent.

Now, the headhunter is someone who can talk to the NIL and the agent (high school coach or parent trusted friend, etc.) Preliminary talks between headhunter, NIL and agent take place.

The player and the school never have direct contact until after he officially enters portal.

I may be wrong on the details, but I suspect it is something like that.

Curious as to why not go for the NFL draft? I don’t see how one more year could help him. Having to learn a new offense with unproven receivers could hurt him in the long run plus the possibility of getting injured.

The college free agent payday

Dec 27, 2022, 1:56 PM

is now higher than the NFL payday for 6-7th round picks whose contracts aren't guaranteed and still have to make the team.

That's why!!!

There's an article on ESPN that covers this pretty well. Right now, Hartman is a 6th-7th rounder. The weird mesh system he played in at Wake obviously doesn't translate to the NFL, so there are unknowns about how good he actually is.

If he can transfer to a more pro-style system (like Notre Dame), he will have a great opportunity to improve his draft projection and also make some NIL $$ that would likely be in line with the salary of a 6th rounder.

I hate to see him leave Wake.
