I understand their rationale in wanting in to that sinking ship. What's in it for them?

Make money. They could exert pressure to further consolidate conferences and have an interest in their unofficial minor league system.

That’s not exactly what’s going on. The NFL has been trying to sell NFL Media. They would certainly take cash from Disney for it, but that’s not being discussed. Instead, it’s a swap of a stake in ESPN in return for for NFL Media.
