He's right. I agree that the flag should come down, and

racism is still very much alive and well; but the problems that face the black community (crime, drugs, poverty) are not problems that can be solved by a million symbolic gestures like taking down a flag, or by white people, or by the government. It's a behavioral problem and an attitude problem. While a long history of racism and oppression certainly helped create the mess, the most effective, real change can only come from within the community itself, and it can start today without a single white person doing anything, or any government involvement whatsoever. The results could be immediate and dramatic.

Blaming racism and oppression for this mess is...

counter productive. In the 1950 and 60 blacks, as a race, had more respect for elders, family and especially their children than they now have. Racism was rampant then and the oppression reduced blacks to common field labor.

Things have changed for them now. They are preferred in government jobs and a fair share of private sector jobs too. If there is racism it's nearly impotent in this day. Racism did not teach them to disrespect women and murder each other at record rates nor did it cause them to make heroes of those who do. Slavery did not teach them to hate other blacks. Oppression did not change their ability to think and find solution with education so available and free.

If blacks continue to blame the problem they have respecting themselves on racism things can only get worse. Worse for them and worse for those with white guilt.

But, keeping the focus on racism as the boogeyman

that is causing all of their woes, while a disaster for them, is great for politicians who benefit from it.
