Something strange regarding Alabama recruiting

Nov 19, 2013, 3:04 PM

Yes Bama pulls in the best recruits, but are they are fairly terrible in terms of turning skill position players (QB, RB, WR) into pro players.

Consider the following RB's and their NFL production:

Mark Ingram: Heisman Winner now often injured 3rd string RB for the Saints
Trent Richardson: Top 5 pick, traded mid season, continues to plod along at a 2 yard per carry clip
Eddie Lacy: Best of the bunch with a 4 YPC average, but certainly not a game changer at this point...much like the other Bama backs, he is more of a straight ahead, plodding type.

Turns out, when Bama backs don't have huge holes to run through, enabling them to gain momentum and run over people, they are average at best.

QB: None

WR:

Julio Jones is obviously the exception, but other than Julio, nothing.

If I were a skill position player, I might look elsewhere.

I really believe the only difference between Alabama and everyone else is there just aren't enough exceptional oline and dline recruits to go around, and Alabama is really good at recruiting a full complement of them, most other top-tier teams get a few of them, and the rest of the NCAA is out of luck.

They just get really good lines, and then can afford to play low-risk football. It's easier to be a good QB or RB when your line is varsity to everyone else's JV.

Saban has the largest recruiting budget in the nation .

New escaldes , chargers and CTS caddys , plus clothes and homes for recruits families is hard to beat .

Their OLs are a function of size/PEDs and the SEC-dictated

'pass' on holding calls. Miss St. game was a perfect example of that.

are you kidding?

Nov 19, 2013, 3:57 PM

2 straight national titles and staring at a 3rd says otherwise...

the goal is to get to the League... That's why and how Saban brings them in, b/c he can get them there.

Yes, he has put a bunch of Q.B.s in the league

Nov 19, 2013, 4:15 PM

Just look at all the starters he has produced.

Wait, no, Q.B. starters
Nothing but R.B. busts
1 WR

He sure is getting them there.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

he gets them there, it's up to them to make the squad.

Nov 19, 2013, 4:21 PM

as bad as i detest 'bama's current run, you gotta hand it to them, they are doing a #### of a job!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I am indicated that

Nov 19, 2013, 4:27 PM

The power running system he runs is not conducive to developing NFL skill players. Ingram, Richardson, and Lacy are used to running through hallway sized holes in the O-Line, building speed, and trucking D.B's. In the NFL they tend (at least Ingram and Richardson) to run into the back of their O-Line because they have terrible vision.

Other than Jones, who is an athletic freak, they haven't produced wide outs, and Saban would rather roll with a kid like McCaron, who won't lose you a game, than put in a Q.B. that will win you the game. They dominate on the offensive line, and they dominate on the D-Line, but have mixed success with other positions even though they are stocked with 5* talent.

I get what you're saying and agree...the trenches is where

Nov 20, 2013, 12:24 AM

Bama outshines everyone...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OK, and I'm probably gonna get flamed for this

Nov 19, 2013, 7:46 PM [ in reply to Yes, he has put a bunch of Q.B.s in the league ]

But Satan's job isn't to put players in the pros, it's to win college football games. I doubt he sells the number of Bama players in the pros when recruiting. He sells Bama titles and wins.

Joe Namath- didn't Saban recruit him

Nov 19, 2013, 4:49 PM

to a Bama fan the other day. They had no idea who he was. I guess that is good since most contemporary people if the know him would for the Suzi Kolber fiasco (Joe- "I want to kiss you" said to her in a drunken slur)

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Are you sure it was a Bama fan?

Nov 19, 2013, 4:54 PM

And not just a USCe fan basking in another teams glory? Remember, they think college football started 5 years ago, so this could be an explanation.

Re: Are you sure it was a Bama fan?

Nov 19, 2013, 5:13 PM

NO we were in Bama and they were wearing Bama gear (maybe just a poser). I figured it was their youth more than anything else

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You would think Bama would have the Probowl roster stacked

Nov 19, 2013, 4:39 PM

Last season they had 1 - Julio Jones.

Re: Something strange regarding Alabama recruiting

Nov 19, 2013, 7:41 PM

I saw a poll not too long ago where a number of recruits were asked if they would rather go to a school and win a championship or go to a school and be a first round pick. The majority chose the championship team.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wouldn't call Green Bay's OL dominant

Nov 19, 2013, 8:02 PM

and what kind of run game did the Packers have before drafting Lacy?

He will be a 1000 yard rusher by the end of the season and the Packers haven't had one of those since 2008.

I actually feel like Yeldon will do good things in the leauge. He does have good footwork and vision. I've seen a few games this year where it's taken a negative play and made it into a great play

Re: Something strange regarding Alabama recruiting

Nov 20, 2013, 1:39 AM

Lacy is a rookie and being the feature back in a offense that is mostly pass oriented when Rogers is happy.

Also, like mentioned above the Green Bay O-Line leaves some things to be desired so a 4 ypc clip is pretty good.

Not to mention right now in the league it's hard to have a good solid run game with how much the offensives are centered around the throwing game.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But if not for the PED-fed mutants on the O-Line...

Nov 20, 2013, 6:47 AM

...would those supposedly sub-standard skill players even get a sniff at the NFL?

Ya gotta get seen to get drafted.

Nov 20, 2013, 7:19 AM

You got that right. The New York Jets have to learn to stay away from the skilled positions from Bama. This year they drafted Millner(cb) in the first round-what a bust......Previously QB McElroy and he never made it at least with the Jets.
