Spring Game - what are you looking for?

3

Apr 11, 2023, 11:14 AM

Who all is going to the spring game?

What are the top 3 things you are looking for?

Here is mine:

1. splits on the O-line. I know the classical air raid has some crazy wide splits on the o-line - I want to see how wide we play. Might sit in the west endzone if it’s open.

2. Peter woods - they say this guy is ready to play any d-line position - interior or on the edge. Can’t recall the coaches heaping this much praise on a freshman.

3. The secondary - started last year in the tank. Seemed to improve over the year. Looking to see if Wiggins and Makuba are ready to lock it down back there. Should be going against marginal WR’s with the injuries

QB play... I want to see how much of this offense the QB's have picked up. I know the receivers have injury issues, but we'll have that during the season as well.

Good health. It's a glorified scrimmage that rarely has anything exciting that comes from it

Football !

I can't wait to see the DBs and WRs play. I'm expecting huge things from these guys this year.
They were very young last year and got exposes (in a good way)

they are about to turn up this season.

How The Young Players Play

1

Injuries are a part of football. As much as blocking and tackling are.
Will the kids who RS or are RS Soph be ready to contribute if a starter goes down or will we fall off. This aspect is typically where we have an advantage over the rest of our conference.
Looking at the depth of this years team the most.

Also looking at LB play!

I'm looking for any new plays on offense and also

how comfortable the players seem to be in the new scheme. WRs in particular.

An offense that while not a finished product is more than a work in progress.

1. Smooth transition from one play to another.
2. Not lightening fast tempo, but definitely up-tempo.
3. No pre-snap penalties (lined up wrong, two men in motion, jumping before snap, etc.)

Other than those generalities I'll be curious to see the formations, the passing routes, how the RBs are used, will Mafah and Shipley be on the field at the same time, etc.

I, too, want to see the new offense, but I think a successful up-tempo offense is a lightning fast one without the confusion and penalties.

QB passing that is on target.
WR that catch the ball.
