I've set a trap for him but if that doesn't work anyone got a recommendation on which ratshot is best at dispatching a squirrel.

I think there’s an opportunity here for Weird Al to do an Aerosmith parody.

Eventually a snake may make its way up there and solve the squirrel problem.

Mothballs & rat poison. The trap might take a while. It needs to be in the area in which the squirrel is bedding down. If you don't get him out soon, you'll probably have a bunch of baby squirrels up there. Good luck. If all else fails, you could call a removal service (expensive).

I actually caught a squirrel in my chipmunk trap once. Just use peanut butter and some nuts as bait.
If you don't want to keep checking the trap, set up a security camera on the trap, and just check the monitor often. You can then release the squirrel outside, preferably in a location far from home.
That's how I would do it anyway.

I used to have that problem

They have to come out eventually for food and water and I found dealing with them outside the hose preferable to having them rot in the attic.
I don't live in the city, but I do live in a neighborhood with close neighbors, so I don't want to shoot .22LR rounds that are obviously from a rifle which would alarm everyone nearby. I bought a pellet rifle and used that for a while and found it fairly effective, but not as efficient as I'd like. .22 rat shot works, but only at close range.
I set up a killing field about 75' from my kitchen doorway from which I have an elevated view of an open area with sandy soil and no rocks. The area has several pine trees scattered around it. In front of the largest diameter pine tree I stuck a pole on the ground and from the pole hung a squirrel cake cage with a squirrel cake in it - it hangs about 4' off the ground. Birds peck at the squirrel cake which causes seeds and corn kernels to litter the ground underneath. Squirrels love an easy meal, so they soon find the bait and the area becomes their favorite lunch spot.
I use CCI sub-sonic quiet .22LR rounds and a Mossberg lend-lease WWII training rifle with scope zeroed exactly on the killing field. Standing at my kitchen doorway and bracing on the open door, the view of the area is just right and I can shoot up in the trees at about a 45 degree angle or down at the killing field at a 30 degree angle. The round is fairly quiet and doesn't alarm the neighbors, but it's hard on the squirrels.....
The strange thing is that the round is so slow, you hear the rifle report and then hear the round hit the squirrel, whereas with a normal supersonic round you'd never hear the round hit the target.

She didn't like the peanut butter alone so I added a little sunflower seed to the bait and that did the trick.

set the trap and checked it often for a few weeks. The problem stopped when I terminated one coming off the house. Went back into the attic a few month later for something else and had another squirrel in the trap. The rascal had died spread-eagle, with both arms and legs sticking out through the wire. Had to break them to get it out of the trap. If you set a trap, don't forget it!

Killing the 1 squirrel is a temporary fix. TRUST ME they

WILL be back.
Here's how to rid yourself of them totally: Hem up all entry points. Do this during the daytime as they will be out feeding and not in the attick.
Kill LOTS of squirrels. They are visual feeders, so you are on the right path there. Going into the attic is a learned behavior and believe you me there are more that can and will get in there. Basically you need to wipe out as much of the population in your yard as possible.
Good luck!

that's all you need. And be careful telling too many people if you shoot them out of season. There used to be a couple of guys at DNR that would definitely write you up.

Try one of the large sonic rodent repellant devices. Worked on keeping squirrels out of a friends garage.

Orange has it right.
Use a trap and put some peanut butter and some nuts or cereal on a piece of tin foil and set the trap lightly so it will shut on light pressure. I also recommend getting the smaller Hav-A-Heart trap, as you may have flying squirrels rather than Gray Squirrels. The flying squirrels and get through the tiniest opening and when I used the bigger trap I could never figure out why there were no squirrels in the trap after it had been triggered.
When I relocate squirrels I make sure that they have to cross at least one Interstate Highway. If they make it back, more power to them!
