This tells me Cagle will be pitching against Tennessee, and we can't expect Thompson to start on short rest this season.

You are reading too much into it. This is only about Cagle pitching not whether Millie could pitch or not.

I was quick to point out she hadn't started games on one-day's rest but once all last year, and that was the regional. She's had the surgery for her hand/arm numbness, and I don't think Rittman will ever let her start on one-day's rest unless it's for a championship.

Millie has been pitching since October. Valerie didn’t pitch at all in the fall after her surgery. Brooke pitched very well in the fall so I’m not at all surprised she is pitching. That said, Millie was probably on the hook to step in had Brooke run into trouble (Rittman often “pairs” Reagan with Valarie and Millie with Brooke). Part of Rittman’s decision-making is likely based on the style of pitchers they are but Valerie does seem to have more stamina than Millie.

Regardless having 4 reliable pitchers is a good problem to have.
