Sunday sermon: The never never-ending story
Nov 11, 2018, 11:47 AM
|
|
From 1 Kings, 20: The officers of the king of Aram advised him, "Their god is a god of the hills. But if we fight them on the plains, surely we will win."
From ESPN, Desmond Howard: "Clemson has never played in weather this cold. This gives Boston College a big advantage."
There's always someone who thinks they know more, who thinks their have the inside scoop. In the Old Testament, it was usually the false prophets, the minions who spouted whatever the king wanted to hear, trading truth for comfort. Today it's the pundits, The people desperate to hide what they don't know beneath a blanket of bravado.
Is anyone else a bit weary of this never-ending story? Did anyone REALLY believe Clemson would be waylaid by a little cold weather? Do they still believe a little frost on the bus windshield would strike fear in the heart of a Tiger? Do they have so little faith?
How silly. How desperate. How wrong.
I will credit Boston College, the team at least, with not buying into this hype. They had a solid defensive plan, reminding us that for all his talent, Trevor Lawrence is still a freshman. They never quit, even after it was clear that General Winter was less an ally than was suspect officiating.
They made the Clemson offense look human at times ... something that no one else had managed for the past month.
But the defense was more than human. It was incomparable in rolling up BC's running game. Would things have been different if AJ Dillon wasn't banged up? Maybe, maybe not. But, like the cold, injury is part of the game.
In the end, once again, Clemson danced before a grateful fan base left alone in the stadium. For the fourth straight year, we took the title pre-ordained by the orange britches. We pried the trophy from the ACC's cold hands and will find room in the case for it.
We also left with our health (save Mitch Hyatt's stinger) and with enough little things to work on so the guys won't get complacent before the games get REALLY big.
We also left with a message for the world: You can look for some reason to doubt us. It's a never-ending story. Count on the weather. Count on some individual. Heck, count on your fingers and toes, if you'd like. Hot, cold, mosquitoes or snowballs, we're in championship season.
We aren't Tigers of the valley, or the hills, or the cold. We are Tigers who look at the foe, who look at the challenge ... and smile.
And championship season is our time.

and right on point. I think tv wise he is an embarrassment. Awful delivery and no insights of value. Corso in his diminished state has far more on the ball than Dez.

Amen brotha... oh how they doubt us... but you now know...

why those of us who were teens listening to Clemson football pre-Danny Ford era and were later at Clemson during Danny Ford era EXPECT to be in this position come championship season! It is our rightful place. It is the natural order of things.
And for those too young to understand why some of us old folks were so frustrated and angry post the Danny Ford era when the administration created self inflicted wound after self inflicted wound for close to 20 years, this is now YOUR reference point as you grow older.
Never religuish the expectation that championship season is Clemson’s natural destiny and anyone even remotely acting like it is ok to be mediocre in the future, run them out of town ASAP! Don’t give them 8-10 seasons to make excuses!

Ahhhhhh- the so often missed REFERENCE POINT ! I wish some one had pointed out that RP back in 81. You young folks have been well advised!
I'm thrilled to see a second reference point come along- this one I will certainly take note of and appreciate!!

Very Good post for those of us that have a perspective that was painfully gained during much less headier times. Wish everyone on here was required to read it.

Rev and huffer great posts. I am from the Pre-Danny Ford era too. I boycotted the Hatfield years and came back with West. The first thing I noticed was lack of speed on defense. It took Dabo and the Orange bowl with WV to go get back to the same speed on defense. Dabo is one of the good ones. I hope he stay for a long time. It great to be back. Go tigers.

Great stuff. Gonna go on a bit of a tangent - Qualkinbush made a good point today on WCCP. The few games before BC, esp. NCST and FSU, they talked about how they wanted to get pressure on Lawrence and yaddah yaddah. The interesting part was that BC didn't do any talking about getting after the QB. Why? Because they knew they could. So yes, BC deserves all the credit in the world for their performance. Great program they've got up there
