Takeaway from hoops opener

Nov 7, 2023, 8:38 AM

Team looked good overall, sloppy in first half but looked sharp in the second half to get a good win. Sloppy first half comes with the territory of game one. PJ Hall is going to be a PROBLEM for teams this year. 20 points in 20 minutes, was able to get any look he wanted (vs a smaller opponent). Seems to have really improved his three point shot and needs to avoid getting in foul trouble like he did last night. Is fully healthy and expect him to be first team all acc this year post season. Chase Hunter played well, shot the ball OK but played the facilitator role well and is going to be a good PG for us. Giraird didn't do much and seems to be trying to find his role in the offense but I expect that to come with time. Really Impressed by Jack Clark, think he should start at the 3. Shot the ball well, played within the offense, and brings good length defensively. Ian Scheflin seems to have taken another step this offseason. Jump shot looks much improved and he seems stronger. Expect a good year for him. Dillon Hunter, Chauncey Wiggins, and Godfrey all look like good role players this year. Hope to see them develop through the year. Should be a fun hoops season, Go Tigers!

Agree. Here are some of my thoughts:

- Girard: He looked small on the court compared to the rest of our team. He also had a couple turnovers and missed a couple open 3's. He will be fine with time, but he didn't really impress last night

- Jack Clark: I was equally as impressed as you were. He has a silky smooth shot, has great size and strength, and just played solid basketball with his minutes. I can now see why my NC State friends said he was arguably the best player on their team last year when healthy.

- Chauncey Wiggins: He looked very comfortable on the court which makes sense with a year of experience. He's going to be a mismatch problem for other teams with his length at the 3. He also showed great court vision and made some really good passes. I didn't see that vision last year.

- PJ Hall: What else can you say about Hall? I expected improvement from Hall considering this is the first healthy offseason he has had in 3 years. He definitely impressed last night.

- Ian Schef: I expected him to take another step and it looks like he did. If he takes a large jump from last year, then that is a huge boost to our team. He looked great.

RJ Godfrey: His arms are jacked! He's going to be a nice bruiser for us and it was nice to see him hit a 3 and also bang down low.

Dillon Hunter: He looked more comfortable on the court than he did all of last year. I really liked his motion in the offense. He has outstanding vision and made some great passes last night.

Hemenway: Good to see him healthy and hitting open shots

Chase Hunter: Had a solid outing and ran the offense well.

Good points I agree with, just need to see the team gel together over time and they could be dangerous

Seems like we had similar takeaways. Have to give a shoutout and props to my man sChief. He's busted his rump all off season on his shot.

I was very impressed with Godfrey. It'll take some time for Brad to settle on his rotation but I really like that we have so many options to play depending on the opponent.

I actually thought Girard looked good too. 3 balls are streaky as you know. But I agree with you that it'll take time to jell with the team. One thing I was real impressed with was his passing and assisting. Will be fun to follow.

Giarard really extends the defense cause they have to chase him deep on the 3 point line. Made a few good passes for easy baskets last night when that happened.

sChief (i like that :) ) definitely put in some work this summer... looks stronger, more fit, and maybe jumping a little better, and the shot definitely looks smoother

agree, even if Girard and Hemenway aren't shooting/scoring, they are an issue for a defense to deal with, creating better spacing

i am optimistic

and not cautiously optimistic - this team is going to be good

Clark looked much more comfortable last night than he did in the exhibition - wouldn't be surprised to see him start and Wiggins be the first sub (reversing what happened last night and in the exhibition)

great to see him and Wiggins not hesitate to bring the ball up the floor - with their length and skills, they both are going to be keys to the success of this team

i know BB tried a bunch of different rotations last night, but i was very surprised to see Girad and Hemenway on the court at the same time - with a 3rd guard (think it was D. Hunter, may have been Chase)

BB played 11 guys in the first half last night - wonder if he will stick with that?

one of the nice things about this team is there is no drop-off with the first line of subs: D Hunter, Clark, and Godfrey can all contribute... and Hemenway and Girard are pretty much interchangeable

I love how flexible we can be with lineups. Have depth across the board. Chauncey is a great chess piece for that, putting him at the 4 with PJ allows us to go small and still defend well. UNCG transfer brings good depth and size down low and Godfrey can guard multiple positions. A lot on BB this year we'll see how it goes

Oh goodie! More unwanted and unasked for thoughts from self proclaimed experts. We all have eyes of our own. We can see too.

I'll be the first to admit I'm far from an expert on bball. But someone must be having a bad day. Hope it gets better for you.

Odd that you go on a thread that clearly states what is intended, then you take time to post your disagreement that a post is made.

T-Net wouldn't exist if it was a cult like you and others wish for. Oh yay! Every post should say:

"Good job Clemson. Our coach ___ is the best. Good game players."

Wow, a snowflake getting triggered that we are discussing basketball on a basketball discussion board. Who would have thought?

I had a blast watching this team last night. They are GOOD.

They were definitely sloppy in the beginning offensively, but they looked REALLY jacked up. Which is a good sign! These guys are excited just like we are, and they settled in over the course of the game.

As far as overall team thoughts go, I really liked the effort on the glass and on defense. We effed up on rotations a couple of times last night, but not nearly as frequently as we did last year. Still want to see Hall be more aggressive rebounding.

However, PJ Hall is an absolute monster and probably the best player we've had at Clemson since Trevor Booker -- and in many ways he's better than Booker was. Chauncey Wiggins is going to be a pro -- Brownell needs to let him play. He was really coaching Chauncey hard last night, and that's fine, but he needs to let him figure it out. He is a level of athlete we have rarely seen at Clemson. He chipped in a few boards, even brought the ball up the floor. His versatility is beyond exciting.

Jack Clark is going to be great for us. Long, skilled, athletic -- just need to keep him healthy and playing. Really like that pickup more and more.

Schieffelin really impressed last night, but I will be even more impressed if he can back that performance up against bigger/more athletic teams. If you remember, last year he showed out early against some bad OOC opponents and then wasn't as effective later in the year. Hope to see him maintain the same level of production over the course of the year.

Chase Hunter and the backcourt generally didn't have a good night. Need to see more from them going forward, and I trust that we will. He and Girard were almost a total non-factor.

RJ Godfrey -- that's my guy. A postgame x-ray would confirm that he indeed has that dawg in him. Just relentless effort at all times, excellent athleticism, and he's developing some skills -- seeing him splash a three was nice. He's gonna need to show he can do that to keep defenses honest.

Lots more thoughts but I don't want to rehash what everyone else said, and I probably already did some, and sorry about that if so. Let's go Tigers!
