Why don’t we tap into endowment for NIL?

Dec 13, 2022, 8:01 AM

I guarantee that’s how Texas A&M pulled their class last year and it’s how Texas could afford the Manning kid this year. I’m really surprised schools like Harvard and Yale aren’t doing this yet. It could be a real game changer.

I’m not advocating blowing the whole billion this year, but I think using a sizable chuck to sign eight or nine five stars would have a pretty solid ROI over the next three years. 6% of the current payout is described as “unrestricted.” Let’s pump that number up a bit and give it a go. Next step, celebrate the natty’s!

It’s funny how the simplest solutions to big problems are so obvious but often overlooked.

They have a bunch of wealthy alumni who will just throw down. I also don't think it is within the rules to use the endowment. As far as Clemson, if we could use the endowment, I doubt we would go that route to start paying our players.

I could see some dweebs sitting in their ivory tower being against it, but what are they going to say when 99.99999% of the fans are celebrating back-to-back natty’s and concession revenue is up 12%. Who’s the smart one now?!?

That whole “unrestricted” category of annual payout seems ambiguous enough to work with. If someone gets mad, tell them to put restrictions on the payout. They won’t have the balls to do it while we are ranked #1 in the country and season ticket sales are at an all time high.

Wouldn't the univerosty's endowment be basically the school paying the players? I was under the impression the school can't pay the players.

They would just need to write the check to TigerImpact. It’s all legal that way.

You would lose more from the anti sports crowd discontinuing their endowment giving. Clemson is after all and educational university first

I would agree, its a school first and sports program second. I'm not sure recognizing that makes one anti-sports though.

Dabo's very healthy buy-out, and if CDS continues to Shyatt the bed, Clemson will need it.

You’re proving my point. With 8 or 9 five stars running around out there, we would never need to fire CDS. Use that money on NIL. We’d be winning Natty’s and counting concession revenue. I made almost twice as much money selling drinks to my friends at my game watching parties in the seasons we won championships compared to this year.

It’ll all work out in the end. Someone just needs to pony up the courage and pull the trigger.

way in this brave new world of College American Gridiron because he's arrogant, prideful, stubborn, hard-headed, knows better than you, but without real coordinator experience, meddles too much in play calling, does not believe in his culture so he's honoring false prophets and in the end is just an all around bad guy that lied to you and yours.

His time is short, no matter of ill-gotten five stars can save Dabo now as he's fallen prey to his old, cheerleading ways.

He's lost, better to kick dirt on him now, move on and find someone more dynamic, owning a better sense of purpose and in tune with the ever changing, current landscape.

If it was that simple where we were allowed to do that, there would universities that would easily outbid us for players. Notre Dame has over an 18 billion dollar endowment. Texas A&M and Michigan ae around 17 billion. Clemson has 1 billion and that endowment ranks 141st. I don't think we want to get in an arms race. It would be like the Yankees vs the Baltimore Orioles in the free agent market. That's not good for us.

Re: That 6 percent is likely counted on in reserve to cover...

Universities are not allowed to pay the players directly in any way. Using endowment funds would be illegal.
We have to understand—- we think Iptay and the athletic department are rich, but Clemson is outside the top 25 athletic department revenue. Yes, Texas A&M is #1 and most of the SEC teams are in the top 25. They collect more money from television.
These schools are larger and have more alumni and richer alumni.

I really wonder how some of y’all get anything done. There are easy ways to make illegal things legal. In this instance, just have the endowment pay some LLC $50 mil in “consulting fees” have that LLC pay another couple LLC’s for stuff like catering and cleaning fees and have those LLC’s write the checks to TigerImpact.

My biggest concern isn’t getting it done, but getting it done quick enough to get eight or nine five stars this cycle. We’re going to have to go big to make up for lost ground.

So if it's just pay them whatever the market dictates, it will be interesting to see who the first 100 million dollar player there will be in college sports. I have a feeling it's not that simple.

Reading a lot of talk about how to spend other people's money on football players.

That's not how it works. This is:

TigerImpact. Go donate. This is where NIL is coming from. It's no different adding a new phone bill. $50/mo.

That’s exactly my point. The endowment money is already there. If we use it, we don’t have to spend our own money and can spend that on concessions and dates. Everyone comes out a winner.
