Wisdom for Whining Winners

I attended Clemson during the 1970-73 seasons. It may have been the worst 4 year stretch in Clemson football history. I believe that during that time the number of wins was 3,5,4, and 5. The thing that was most memorable during those years was watching Don McCauley set the NCAA single game rushing record at the Valley in the pouring rain. Unfortunately he played for UNC. Never went to a bowl, not even the one that the Coots go in Shreveport. I encourage all you who are down about the pitiful performance of our team thus far this season to enjoy the Golden Age of Clemson Football. Look on the bright side. We’ve already qualified for Shreveport or Boise. Drink a beer or sip some wine or a Jack on ice. Relax. And don’t smoke crack. Go Tigers.

I was there 1972-1976. Only the '74 team was decent. But not one bowl game.

I was there for those same 4 years. Man, that was a rough stretch, no doubt. Never missed a home game, though. Guess I was too young and naive to know that I was not supposed to be enjoying the games and having fun.

Glad you remember the misery. I don’t know about you, but it really make one appreciate what Dabo and others have done to promote Lil ole Clempson. I don’t live in the area now but get a lot of questions about CU. I always encourage folks to visit with the qualification that if they do,they shouldn’t be surprised if they want to move there.

Amen Brother. Was there71-75 and an additional year of grad school. We stunk. Hootie, in addition to just being a worst coach than Howard, decided to discontinue the rock and the hill. My senior year Red Parker was there. Decent triple option offense but no D. 74 we beat Ga and Ga Tech when they played us for the first time in the Valley but were roundly outscored for the full year at 7-4. 75 nightmare may have awakened us for the present. Ladies and gents, don’t take being among the nation’s elite for granted. Too many great programs and great coaches trying to do the same. Other than Howard’s Obowl teams and Danny, it really never happened before, and almost never year after year. We are on a five year streak. These are the good old days

Good summary. Hootie was a good guy but never got us going. Whatever his role in introducing the Paw should be appreciated.

Thanks Neal. Some people don’t get my pitiful humor. That phrase was just a friendly jab at all the Debbie Downers who want to ##### about a 45-10 road win over a team that put up 62 on a pretty good Wake team.

I didn't see sarcasm in it. But to answer your question, I do sarcasm fine.

Promise there are 100 plus college teams that would trade their record or most of their players for our team. It’s all good!

We were jobbed in 1974. They picked UNCheats to go to a bowl after the first weekend in November and we were 4-4. The next Saturday. we played the sheep and beat them soundly. Then we beat the Coots. we ended the year at 6-4 but the bowls were already filled. Fortunately the rules were changed. We did get to serenade Pepsodent Paul.

Maybe I am disremembering, I thought we beat more than just 1 bowl bound team. But I do remember chanting "Sun Bowl" at the UNCheat game.

I was a senior in 74, and I thought I received a bumper sticker that said 7 and 4 in '74. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm not looking it up.

was at CU for the 72-77 seasons, under grad and grad school, 6 seasons. believe we won a total of 27 games.. and Pell won 9 of those in one year, so we won 18 games in the other 5 years. Duke kicked a looooong FG (K's name was vince fusco) as time expired to tie us on homecoming one game. believe if a current student is in his 6th season, he's seen 7 losses. i saw 6... plus 2 frigging ties.. as a SR alone.
these are indeed the golden years. enjoy them.

You got me by one, my football seasons there were 72 thru 75, 4, 5, 7, and 2 wins. Don't know how we inexplicably pulled that "Undefeated Home Season" in '74, because it was certainly back to misery in '75. And How.
