The bottom 5 ACC teams are bring the conference down....

2

Feb 6, 2023, 1:19 PM

The ACC as a conference is down a bit. We only have 1 top 10 team, and the typical blue bloods are struggling. UNC still has the talent and I expect them to make a run in the tourney. The main problem is the bottom 5 teams are dragging down the conference A LOT. Our bottom 5 teams average a NET ranking of 229. That is horrific. I do think FSU and BC are playing a lot better than their rating. They were both hampered in the non conference with injuries.

IMO, the top 10 teams in the ACC could go toe to toe with any other conference not named the big 12. The average net ranking of the top 10 teams in each conference are below. Our ratings are right in the middle of the pack. You also have to consider that any time an ACC team plays one of the bottom 5, their ratings drop.

the bottom 5 teams in every conference are bringing them down.

That is why they are called the bottom.

That was not the point of the post. I gave you the average net rating of the top 10 teams in each conference. Ours stack up against other conferences. Our bottom is especially bad rating wise.

Of the conferences listed, we are dead last when including all teams.

this stretch and our record will take care of itself. That's how this works. Our opponents are what they are. We are .500 versus P5 OOC for the season, markedly better to date versus the ACC at 10-3.

You do realize that by this very same logic (ACC is underrated because bottom
5 suck) that our middling rating is probably overrated since we’re the team playing all these bozos twice. Of course you didn’t.

Re: The bottom 5 ACC teams are bring the conference down....

Feb 6, 2023, 3:05 PM

He’s bordering on parody now. We have 3 q3 and q4 losses despite playing a ridiculously easy schedule. Per Sports Reference it is objectively the easiest schedule we’ve played since 1967. But considering there were only roughly 100 D1 teams in 67 it would be very easy to argue this is the easiest schedule we’ve ever played. The relative weakness of the ACC, top to bottom, was established when the entire conference shat the bed in out of conference schedule. After that, all that was left was to establish the pecking order within the conference. But, because of unbalanced scheduling, the conference standings do not correlate to the actual standing of the teams in quality.

I’d also like to point out how silly the “our top 10 teams could compete with any conference.” First, it really isn’t true. We have plenty of non-conference losses across the conference to make that observation. But it’s also a false equivalence. If he wants to brag about our Top 10 he has to compare against their Top 10. And our conference would not fare well in such matchups.

Feb 6, 2023, 3:58 PM

Do our net ratings go down whether we beat or lose to those 5 teams? Can you answer the question?

This post was nothing about our OOC so like always, you are deflecting.

Our top 10 teams in the league have comparable net rankings to the top leagues in the NCAA. And the ACC numbers are deflated because anytime you play one of the bottom 5, your net rating goes down regardless of winning or losing.

The bottom 5 teams.

Our net went down when we beat VT earlier in the year.

Re: The bottom 5 ACC teams are bring the conference down....

1

Feb 6, 2023, 4:20 PM

A) I don't recall our NET dropping when we won. VT moved up, though.

B) The NET rating updates aren't just about our most recent one-game result. If we beat VT but a bunch of other teams on our schedule lose on the same day, our strength of schedule takes a hit, previous wins lose value, and the whole sum of the season NET gets adjusted.

You can't look at spots gained/lost daily and attribute that to one thing. You'd have to look at new results of every team we played, and every team they played...

Re: The bottom 5 ACC teams are bring the conference down....

Feb 6, 2023, 4:09 PM [ in reply to Re: The bottom 5 ACC teams are bring the conference down.... ]

Any discussion of our net rankings does, in fact, hinge on out of conference performance. And no, it isn’t as simple as we play them and we go down. There are halves to the NET formula. In half wins and losses are weighted but there is no penalty for losing. The other half uses in game metrics. So beating a bad team by one point hurts. Your premise is flawed.

Re: The bottom 5 ACC teams are bring the conference down....

Feb 6, 2023, 4:16 PM

Which bad teams did we beat by 1 point? FSU on the road?

What about when we beat VT and we went down in the NET?

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The bottom 5 ACC teams are bring the conference down....

Feb 6, 2023, 4:59 PM

I can’t find a site that lets us look at overall NET rankings week to week. If we could, what I think you’d see is that when we beat VT on the road, by 3, that was a quad 1 victory and moved us up more than the quad 2, 1 point home victory moved us down. In the 1 point home game, the in game metric half of the formula out weighed the quad weighted w/l half of the formula. But your broad assertion that playing teams only hurts everyone isn’t true. The scale maxes out at 10 points. If you beat your quad 4 opponents by 10 points you aren’t moving down.

Warren Nolan allows you to look at NET rankings by week under each team. Our NET plummeted after losing to
Loyola and steadily increased thereafter until the loss to Wake Forest. The downward movement after the VT game is a red herring. We went into that week 49th. After a bad road loss (10 points is the max threshold on the in game metric side / decent NET team) we win by one at home. We take the two extremes of a win and loss in the metric half of the formula and we end up 59th to start the next week. We crush a bad GT at home (no NET penalty) but barely beat a bad FSU team by one. We still improve 1 place to 58th. We go 0-2 last week and only fall 64. There is no conspiracy. We’re right where we belong.

So, if you remove 33% of the conference - you think the ACC is good?
Lol.

What else can we manufacture?

If you remove the point guard from every team - you get less assists.
If you remove the top 50% of the teams in each league - you still have 50% left.
If the ACC teams make more shots - they stand a better chance at winning OOC games.

How are those?
