Which 80s & earlier bands/artists still sound the best?

Been watching some YouTube concert clips here and there. Age is a beeyotch on the voice, but some have managed to dodge the bullet.
First one that comes to mind is Billy Joel. Still sounds great, even at 74. And Mike Love, from the Beach Boys, still hits most of the notes at 80 something! Brian Wilson - love him, but God bless him, he lost it a long time ago. Mick Jagger's gotta be up there, too.
Saw Pat Benatar & her husband on Austin City Limits on TV the other day. She still sounded excellent - didn't miss a beat and didn't sound like they had to adjust the octaves any. If you like her at all, that was a really good show to watch.
I've hears/read that Bon Jovi sounds pretty bad these days. That's too bad. I know he's in his 60s, but that just doesn't seem that old to me (I'm 54)!

Looks the same too.
Sting can no longer sing and it is painful to listen to him. I felt sorry for him on an interview I recently watched.

He always had a pretty high tone/register in most of his songs.

lol. So sting at 72 doesn't sound as good as he did 50 years ago?
I'm listening to him on youtube sing "message in a bottle" from Amsterdam in 2023. He sounds great.

but time isn't quite as hard on the ladies' voices as it is on the men's.
Wish I could go see the show, but at $150+ per ticket - ain't happening. I remember when the Stones' Steel Wheels tour came to Clemson and I thought that $30/ticket was expensive! The prices, they are a changin'.....

I saw The Rammones, Van Halen, and Black Sabbath at The Omni in ATL in 1978 and the ticket was $8.00. That same year, I saw Santana, Atlanta Rhythm Section, The Doobie Brothers, Eddie Money, and Mother's Finest at "Champagne Jam" at Grant Field in ATL for $12.00.

kind of smoky, gravelly sounding anyway, and she didn't write many songs that required a really high register to begin with, so she still can pull most of them off with minor adjustments.
I still think it's a crime she and Lindsay Buckingham couldn't work out their differences to the point that he got kicked out of the band, AGAIN, not long before Christine McVie passed away.

have Vince Gill in reserve, just in case he can't. I have seen them live on three occasions, first on August 3, 1975 on the "One of These Nights" tour at Carolina Coliseum in Columbia. That was the "original" lineup of Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon, and Randy Meisner on bass, with the late addition of Don Felder on lead guitar, who came on board for the "On the Border" album. They were superb. Tickets were $17.50 each, best seats in the house aside from the floor, a princely sum at the time.
Next time was 2009, on the "Long Road from Eden" tour, at North Charleston Coliseum. I was mostly curious how they would still sound after all the years and personnel changes. No more Bernie Leadon, Don Felder, or Randy Meisner. But, the addition of Joe Walsh, who came on board starting with the Hotel California album, was HUGE. Timothy B. Schmitt was an able replacement on bass, but couldn't touch Randy Meisner's voice range, and to the bands credit, they didn't try to make him do that. Stuart Smith as a sideman capably played the Don Felder guitar parts, although not with the ease and flair of Felder. Again, the show was techincally superb. Tickets were $130 each, stratospheric compared to 1975.
Next was the first tour with Vince Gill on board after the passing of Glenn Frey, this time at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia. Again, I was curious as to how they would look and sound without Glenn, and with the additions of his son Deacon, and Vince Gill. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they still had "it", and the show production was as slick as ever. My only letdown was that Vince Gill was almost unused on this tour, considering his immense talent. He was basically just providing background harmonies, I think "Take It to the Limit" may have been the only song he soloed on. Frey's son Deacon was still handling most of the songs that Vince would take on once Deacon left to pursue his own career in music. Deacon's voice was almost a clone of Glenn's, sometimes almost eerily so. Tickets for this show, which I had to purchase on the secondary market via Ticketmaaster, were over $400 (!) each, once all their fees were added on. That is too rich for me, so, even though they are still touring, most likely that was my last time seeing them live.

Bongiovi never sounded good live any way. I saw him 4 times and he was about like Stephen Pearcy from Ratt, darn near tone deaf. As far as never disappointing, Metallica has always been really good live. GreenDay is one of the best as far as sounding like the LP. I have t seen too many bands from that era lately. The Eagles were amazing at Death Valley. Great voices. Kansas was always amazing live as well.
I’ve probably seen more 90’s-present artist live lately. Alanis Morissette is incredible live. Five Finger Death Punch is incredible. Breaking Benjamin is unreal and sounds like the album. Dorothy is another. Shinedown also never disappoints.
I guess there’s a pattern there. Yes, I was a child of the 70’s and 80’s as well. I was a hair band lover. I think grunge was my sweet spot. I like them loud and heavy. Brett Michaels couldn’t sing well either. Lots of studio magic added. Vince Neil has moments of splendor. It depends how far off the wagon he’s gotten. When he’s sober, he can sing with anyone.
That’s my two cents. You and I have about a year age difference.

I saw Poison and Warrant in Greenville in

1989 or 1990. I thought Michaels sounded fine. But, (and I hope somebody else here can confirm/validate) the highlight of the evening was the feuding between Poison and Warrant. Warrant had just released Cherry Pie and was arguably the bigger act at the time but Poison was the headliner. Jamie Lane wasn't happy and let the audience know it. Warrant had been given a tiny stage in front of Poison's full stage and had very little production outside of a roaming spotlight.
Jamie Lane called out Bret Michaels and cursed Poison's music. It really built up some anticipatory tension for when Poison hit the stage. The Poison crew cursed and raved about Warrant being ungrateful and how they were small potatoes. Quite entertaining. I was hoping for a face to face confrontation but that never came to fruition. Anybody else at that concert?

I was there. I fought to front row center like always and Brett was a heckuva showman. His voice wasn’t terrible. I remember the feud well. Poison had the last laugh all the way to the bank. I also forgot to add Kip Winger. That guy could croon.

Two concerts I've been to the past 10 years stand out because the artist sounded so much better than I expected.
First was Paul McCartney in 2015. He sounded like vintage Beatles era McCartney at age 72. I can't vouch for him now, but 9 years ago he was rocking.
Second was Elton John in 2019. That was the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour that had him appearing several times per week for months on end. He raked in some serious cash, but put on an incredible show here in Columbia at least.
Both of the shows were super high-energy. Given their ages, I was highly skeptical going in. I expected a kind of mellow retrospective of their careers, but came away very impressed.

Amen on The Eagles. I would love to see them do the halftime at a Super Bowl. However, they are white, don't have half naked people on stage, don't hunch everything in site, and don't use vulgar language in their songs, and the NFL does not approve of their clean shows. That's 5 strikes so no way. However, Usher did have a clean show which is very unusual for the NFL.

Brian Johnson of AC/DC can still rock it! There are several YouTube clips of him being a gust performer at Billy Joel concerts! AC/DC just announced a new tour this week, though only European cities so far.
I saw the Who several years ago with a philharmonic orchestra playing behind them! I was never a huge fan of theirs but that concert was amazing! Baba O’Riley is now on my top 10 rock n roll songs list.
How about a little love for New Kids on the Block? I am kidding Tnet….Relax!

I happen to be going to a concert in Vineland, New Jersey this Saturday evening entitled "Radio Flashback to the 70's and 80's" in which a four piece band will be playing an assortment of 70's and 80's music to light, video background of actual groups for two and one-half hours, billed as a very reactive concert with standing, signing, dancing, and all - should be a great time of reminiscing!
