The Hard Truth

I still remember cheering outside of North Augusta Middle School when I heard the news of Tommy Bowden being fired. I was still just a whippersnapper and shared the same opinions as my father about everything Clemson football. I had no idea who Dabo Swinney was, but I was tired of my team getting laughed at by the Gamecock and Georgia fans I went to school with. We were a laughing stock back then and I hated every second of it. Fast forward a few years and Dabo had the ship sailing in the right direction. Then BOOM. The ship took a direct hit in the hull from the USS West Virginia. Badly injured, the ships captain did not let her sink. He made changes that shaped Clemson for a decade. A decade of winning and smooth sailing.

Fast forward again to present day. The ship is once again taking on water. Will Dabo be Commander Edward J. Smith and go down with his ship, or will he be Jack Sparrow and pull off the impossible and get us back to dry land unscathed?

I think all of this comes at an extremely unfavorable time. In years past I think Dabo would have been given plenty of time to right the ship, but in a time of such uncertainty with conference realignment, money and all of the other factors I think he will have to make a quick turnaround of this. I love Dabo and I trust him. I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt most of the time. But the hard truth is (in my opinion), if he doesn't make the necessary changes and get back to winning ways quickly, I think we will sink with the whole fleet (the ACC).

I think it is imperative that Dabo makes changes quickly and has another great season next year. It is not his fault that the landscape has turned into what it has, but sinking in the pinnacle of conference realignment talks hurts not only Clemson's football team, but the entire University. And one thing that matters more than anything in this sport, is money. Sadly, I don't think he will be given the time he deserves if he doesn't make a quick turnaround and he will be asked to retire or step down. BUT I HOPE IT NEVER COMES TO THAT. I hope and trust that he will right the ship. Because HE IS and most likely will be the best coach we have ever had.

Sorry for the corny sailing references, but it's all I could think of on a Monday morning. Let's keep supporting our team and Dabo, because he has always done what's best for the program. But at the same time, be aware that his leash may be a lot shorter than many of us think, especially if he does not make critical changes and get this program back in the right direction. Money talks and missing out on a big contract in the Big 10 or SEC is almost like a death penalty in today's game.

Your memory is not good if you think the cawks were laughing at Tommy Bowden's Tiger teams.

Bowden went 7-2 against the coots.

My memory is indeed, not good (too many concussions). I do remember losing a lot of games we were supposed to win and getting shellacked by Alabama. But like I said, I was in middle school.

I remember losing to teams like Wake Forest and Maryland though. The inconsistency was extremely frustrating. Right now, we are consistently bad.

I agree that Dabo will be given less time to right the ship, due to conference re-alignment, NIL, and the portal. Will the SEC or Big 10 want a program that pretty much refuses to use the portal to stay competitive? If they put the money and time into bringing Clemson into their conference, they will want to see action and results from Dabo that he knows how to fix the problems that are harming the program.

Thank you for posting what I was trying to say, in a much quicker and way more intelligent way. I am grateful!

You might be right. I can't believe we would part ways with Dabo. But I was shocked when Danny Ford was fired. So, don't listen to me. Crazy things happen. I hope he can fix it. Soon.
