One of these things is not like the other:

USC -33.5 @ ASU
PSU -14.5 @ Iowa
TEX -14.5 @ Baylor
FSU -1.5 @ CLEMSON

Just in a cursory look at Vegas odds of AP ranked teams playing on the road vs unranked (Iowa is 25). Clemson and Iowa are similar in rank and FSU and PSU are similar, yet there is a 2 TD difference for these home dogs.

This would tell you to either take FSU big or accept 100% the anti-Clemson bias in the polls. I tend to trust Vegas more than neckbeard sports writers and the interns that fill these out for the coaches.

Clemson plays a clean game (no bonehead turnovers and a kicking game that isn't trash) and they beat FSU. Go Tigers.

I think it has more to do with the perception of Duke than anti Clemson. Facing a 9+ win team on the road is a challenge for any team. The perception of Duke is much lower even though they won 9 games and have started 3-0. The good news is Clemson has plenty of big games left on the schedule.

ASU and Baylor are a combined 2-4 with their only wins coming against Southern Utah and Long Island. Iowa couldn't score 14 points if they played for 150 minutes.

... but doesn't allow them to consistently beat good teams.

Strong defense against run but suspect secondary. And a boring, vanilla offense that is 40 years out of date.

So against average teams in the B10 they grind out wins. Against anyone with athletes on offense they get exposed and run out of the stadium.

So, every year pollsters fall for it and rank Iowa and most every year they rack up 7 or 8 wins with the occasional 10+ win season in which their plodding style gets some upsets.

They've only had 2 head coaches since 1979, so folks there have proven that they are slow to change.

But it isn't going to win them a national championship.

And, as Vegas is showing, Penn State is verly likely going to run away from them as any team with athletes and a modern offensive style will.

It would not make sense if this was 11 weeks into the season. Makes sense three weeks in (or four weeks if week 0 counted).
