Hummmm.....

1,000 years ago life expectancy was what, 28ish? About the time we started smoking tobacco (nicotine), and drinking caffeine from coffee beans, and drinking more and more hard alcohol and spirits, and started polluting the environment with industry and the internal combustion engine, life expectancy during the past 200 years has skyrocketed to 78.
And here we are today attacking all of the major things that are different today than 1,000 years ago. Interesting isn't it?
In fact, going back in history, modern cities, as we know them, couldn't have existed without alcohol. Cities never really took off until the problem of waterborne diseases could be tackled. Just so happens fermenting grapes for wine, and hops, etc. for beer, makes water safe to drink, and eliminated cholera, and other diseases, making cities happen.

The uptrend started before penicillin
May 21, 2021, 9:05 AM
|
|
At least in the US and industrialized world. The inflection point seems to be around 1860 for the US, Europe, and Australia, about the time of our Civil War. Between then and WW2, life expectancy had almost doubled, and penicillin wasn't even available until WW2, and its use grew mainly after WW2.
Actually, in the US, life expectancy grew more from the Civil War to the introduction of penicillin/WW2, than it has since the introduction of penicillin.

I can tell you with certainty that is not true. When I kicked that stuff out of my life for good, EvERYTHING got better. But then again I was a pretty hard-core drinker.
And I will tell you a secret that helped me get off of it, there is nothing in the alcohol that is making you feel this way, it is your brain's natural response to the drug that causes the flood of pleasurable chemicals in your body. Alcohol is poison, it just tricks your brain into releasing these fun cocktails, all it does on its own is slow respiration and give you headaches.

Good MOrning America told her that if dish soap dried on the dishes and then you ate off that dish, your chance of cancer increased exponentially. She freaked and washed all the dishes again and we had to dry them off.
She died from Geloblastoma, which is definitely not caused by dish soap.
Lets worry less and live more.

And because I respect Prod and I know this is an important
May 21, 2021, 10:03 AM

topic for him, my serious response is that I think this is an interesting and noteworthy study and finding, but I think you need to pause before overreacting in the broader sense. Put simply, we see in life that there are incredibly successful, productive people who drink...some heavily. And there are people that abstain that otherwise contribute very little or do very little. At the end of the day I doubt these scientist could align their finding in degradation of 0.8% grey matter with actual abilities, or success in life. And I get it...all things being equal, why not try to optimize your mental acuity? Well, because life isn't simply an exercise in optimizing one's performance. Life also is to be enjoyed, and shared. And one way we enjoy and share life in this society is with alcoholic beverages. Maybe some day in the future that won't be the case but it is today.
But I certainly applaud and support Prod in his efforts to avoid alcohol, as I know it is a strong part of his faith.

That seems an equally silly question. If I said yes to your question, then I'd be against drinking water. If you said yes to my question, you'd be in favor of dismembering people.

I said alcohol in moderation can enhance quality of life.
You responded with a link to someone abusing alcohol by drinking and driving.
So what’s your point?

In response to “alcohol in moderation can enhance quality of life” you said tell that to the 100,000 who die each year.
So it would seem your point is that if something, when abused, can lead to death or someone else’s death it can not enhance quality of life.

I hate to be so cynical, but who are the authors, what are their lines of research, who pays for their research, do they have strong political alliances, did they grow up with an alcoholic in the family, how do we know they are objective, etc.
